What to say about the band. Condx were fair when we began, but really deteriorated mid-Comment Round. Condx grew worse for the Monitor’s Session. We initially copied Don KJ7VGV well, but before he could send his traffic, the band swallowed his signal. We called for a Relay, thinking no one would copy us, and Steve W7WSV in Mesa, AZ came right back. He Relayed Don’s Report and returned, ‘Traffic CONFIRMED’. It was a text-book event; we overcame terrible band condx by Relay. Check the odd reception patterns in the test images below.

No one copied the first two modes in the NBEMS Exercise tonight. After our practice session this evening, Mindy forgot to clear the ‘blocks’ window in FLAMP’s Transmit screen. Her only transmission was blocks# 6 & 7. RX stations received no header.

Making matters worse, the Exercise instructions were faulty. On the night we focus on parsing instructions, the instructions are incomplete. Because the instructions didn’t identify the paragraph to copy, all answers are correct. It’s a lesson for us in writing and checking Exercise instructions. Thanks for your patience and Thanks to John KS6M for catching the omission.

One take-away is, CLEAR the ‘blocks’ window to send the whole file. We’re usually on top of this; we remove blocks during the NBEMS Exercise as stations are CONFIRMED. FLAMP collects blocks from all REPORTS, but doesn’t remove any. We delete them manually before the next pass.

This condition is also true for the RX screen. The ‘blocks’ window must be CLEAR to Relay the whole file.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Hank KM6VFF in Willows,CA. We ask incoming stations to read the Quick-Start section on the website: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/  and ck-in QNX long enough to learn net routines. Many incoming Ops work the NBEMS Exercise as Monitors (QNX) and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. It’s an easy entry to working the Exercise on-air.

Here’s a useful Button for your Macro tool-belt. It sends TxID 2x (or Xx) before your transmission.  We use it when changing modes to be sure everyone copies the change. While the RSID signal is strong, it’s also brief and easily covered by HF squeaks and farts. We use this macro every week in net operations.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Last week’s NBEMS Exercise ran like a Swiss clock. We’re always impressed with how many Ops have mastered this complex and demanding Exercise. It takes skill, focus, and practice to work this Exercise smoothly. Everyone processed emergency-net traffic-handling routines automatically, without error. Tonight we’ll repeat last week’s NBEMS Exercise with the PC-Editor and focus more on the instructions. The instructions again define six discreet ‘actions’.

Here’s a few focal points for tonight’s Exercise:
The correct file-name is important to storing traffic files for intuitive retrieval. Following file-naming protocol will assure that your file appears logically with other records in that category. File names have numerous functions. The test image files you email with their FLDIGI-format name are easy to store and retrieve because they all have the same name-format.

URCALL = place-holder for your CALLSIGN. Replace it w/your CALLSIGN in CAPS.
URCALL_ex233.txt = W1AW_ex233.txt.

‘PC-Editor’ refers to a Text Editor on your PC, ie: Notepad, Wordpad, Notepad++, etc. This Exercise doesn’t include FLMSG. FLMSG always includes Form overhead in files output in Text. We’re using the PC-Editor for experience working between NBEMS apps and the PC file system and PC apps. Not all net traffic requires FLMSG.

The instructions tell which sentences to send. In this case, more isn’t better. Following traffic-handling instructions exactly is important. Our Exercise instructions are just practice, but real-world emergency traffic instructions can be critical. Enjoy the Exercise!

NBEMS Exercise Tips:
1) Read all the instructions FIRST. You may work more intuitively by re-sequencing the steps. Process them in the order you prefer.
2) Copy/Paste the whole paragraph and delete unwanted text (this Exercise).

Next week, the NBEMS Exercise will include a Mode Shoot-Out comparing OFDM to PSK-R modes of similar word-speed. Next month, we’ll run a similar Shoot-Out comparing OFDM to PSK-R modes with similar bandwidth. OFDM and PSK modes are most suitable for VHF operations, but they can move HF traffic very quickly when band condx are favorable. Experimenting with different modes develops a working knowledge of many modes, enabling us to more quickly match mode to condx when transmission time is critical.

A dozen station have the Path Evaluation Macro working. We’ll soon be ready to give it a spin during nets. Let us know when you have it working or you need assistance: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Pre-Toning with the TUNE button is ORCA Protocol. Please disable FLDIGI’s Pre-Signal Tone for nets. Manual Pre-Toning by TUNE button is more effective in avoiding doubles than the automated Pre-Signal Tone. When replying to NCS, Pre-Tone in either form is redundant; everyone expects your TX.

By start of net, NVIS waned abruptly. WB7EUX had best over all signal.

The storm that hit us yesterday evening/night didn’t let up until this morning. Only have 1/4″ rain for today. No damage, but lots of folks are still without power. Also noted several broadcast FM stations are still off line.

This week’s NBEMS net just happened to fall on this very stormy night, which was very appropriate, since I had planned to use the FLMsg WX report forms!

Wow, without NVIS, the copy on psk modes is very poor! So far, perfect strike 3 for 3 on FLA, and only 50% in mfsk32. Wonder if NCS will be able to copy my comments tonight.

Stay safe, keep the peace, and hope to see you “down the log”

ORCA welcomes Hank KM6VFF in Willow, CA. Yep, PSK issue was my fault from our pre-net practice…. I had blocks 6,7 in my relay box. This prevented me from transmitting the entire file. Only the preamble of the file and blocks 6, 7 were transmitted. Ooops!

Time change and darkness is helping with better band condx during ck-in. Band seems to have faded a bit during TFK round. Thanks to all for taking time to check in.

Good to see all on the WF tonight. Stay safe!
