ORCA DIGITAL NET, Report, 08/dec/15

Check-ins: 6
Stations:
K7VHG
KI6RIT (80/40 dipole @ 30′, 25w)
KE6SLS
NX6DX (160-mtr dipole at abt 60ft)
W7ZAP (35w, 120’ doublet @ 65’)
K7KY NCS (35w, 180′ doublet @ 80′)

Although the band was up/down and noisy tonight, digital did well. Walt K7VHG was
the first check-in, but we lost him before traffic rotation. Losing Walt, we only had
Nick KI6RIT in Ukiah and Mindy W7ZAP and me, but Jaye KE6SLS popped in during traffic
rotation. He was copying Mindy & I poorly and Nick not at all. Jaye changed modes to
MFSK-16 and we were all printing 95-100%. MFSK-16 is half as fast as 32, but more
reliable in noisy conditions. The band improved somewhat and we returned to MFSK-32
later in the net. During comment rotation, John NX6DX checked in, also in Ukiah. At
first, I thought it was David NX6D. John’s callsign printed with a LC x and I thought it
was an artifact. Sorry for the mix-up, John.

We discussed weather and holiday impact on net participation and concluded
participation would likely increase over winter. We had some FLAMP traffic tonight, but Nick was unable to complete his due to laptop issues. Overall, digital communications were good as the net went on. The other FLAMP message was finished
with one fill.

Jaye noted he didn’t receive an acknowledgement of his FLAMP report. During
rotation, we don’t acknowledge REPORTs. Sender assumes FLAMP has heard all
REPORTs. For formal traffic, we would observer traffic conventions and acknowledge.

Our current policy for FLAMP traffic calls for a single REPORT round. There will be times when a message cannot be completed with one fill. We are practicing digital traffic and completing a practice message is not crutial. A single REPORT round lets us practice the routine and not hold up the traffic round. Ops wanting further fills can obtain them at net-end.

Jaye’s REPORT asked for blocks, 1, 15, 17. Upon reception, FLAMP didn’t FETCH
those blocks, but prepared to resend all blocks. I deleted them from the window and
entered 1, 15, 17, and FLAMP sent only those blocks and Jaye completed the file.

Jaye had just completed a CW QSO with an Op just returning to CW after 30yrs off. His fist was still good. The story was heartening to me. I’ve been really busy lately and my CW has taken back seat to more pressing things like dental work and home projects. I
don’t want my CW skills to fade away and I’m anxious to get back to more regular CW.

The website is still suspended while we sort out migration issues. Hopefully next week.
This also blocks our email ‘@ferrycreek.com’. To email us, please use the temporary
email address from this post.

I would like to compile a list of west coast HF digital nets. If you participate in other digital nets, please send me the info. There may be times we will want to communicate with other west coast digital operators or nets. I’ll post the results on the website.

Jaye reports that Humboldt County has started a digital net following it’s regular HF
Phone net on Monday evenings. The digital net starts at 2015p, 3.582usb, Olivia, 1000wf. Have your RxID on.

Thanks for taking valuable time to participate in the net. I’ve learned so much about
FLDIGI and digital traffic in the last three years while working with you. I hope to see you next week too. Wishing you a safe and satisfying holiday season. 73 Doug K7KY

It supports all new macro features including having all four rows of macro buttons visible and dockable anywhere, and it fixes a bug in ARQ. At Check-in: Send CALLSIGN only for FLMSG traffic or keyboard. Monitoring stations may check 'in & out' with: CALLSIGN IN&OUT. REMINDERS: MFSK-32 is our usual mode, but we also experiment with other modes. Please check the mode before you send. The previous station may have changed modes. Our internal communications are MFSK-32. FLAMP doesn't open automatically. FLDIGI can be configured to start FLAMP at the AutoStart tab. FLAMP provides for a REPORT from receiving stations. Originator then resends only the missing blocks, automated by FLAMP. For FLAMP traffic, we interrupt the directed traffic round for a single round of FLAMP REPORTs. All following Ops send their REPORT w/o NCS prompt. Originator resends missing blocks. Only one REPORT round. Then, continue directed traffic rotation. Ops still missing blocks can fill after net. Keep your rotation list handy. We occasionally have monitoring stations that check 'in & out'. They are not called during net. Note which stations are 'in & out'. We'll skip them during rotation. The ORCA DIGITAL NET website is unavaliable while we transition to a new provider. During this process, our email @ferrycreek.com is also down. You can contact me by replying to the net report. Checking in late? Send your CALLSIGN during a lull or print it nearby on the waterfall. Have to leave early? Check-out with NCS so we don't search for you during rotation. KE6SLS Jaye… How copy now back to MFSK32? < K7KY Before RSID: <<2015-12-09T04:51Z MFSK-32 @ 1502>>

fb Doug. and Mindy, your last was finally 100%. I did qro to 25 watts my station is getting a little weak now since we have not had sun for two days.
Anyway, Doug, you blew me away last xmissing.. had to craank down the audio! hahaa.. That’s the band this time of year.

Okay, we learned a few things. MFSK16 has a greater FEC and smaller foot print in rotten condx. When condx are worste than rotten, we will look at
olivia mode, it willl print even when our ears can not even hear the signals.

One foot note. After the HF HUmboldt counter net, at 8:15 pm local time, we are going to be taking check=ins for digi stations at 3.582 USB. The mode
will be Olivia. The problem is that right now, at the net time, band goes very long and close in stations can not be heard. So, to fight this wonderful HF
situation, I thought, lets do DIGI mode with Olivia and maybe we can hear Brookings and southern Humboldt! It did work. But it was the first time for
many ops last night. again, I will make sure that I anounce the mode and freq and time with a center of 1000

hz on the water fall. again 1000hz on the wf.

Okay Doug, tnx again for the great net and welcome John,

KE6SLS < K7KY Very interesting Jaye... Nice idea with the OLivia digital net.... I'll give it a try next week. I couldn't hear anyone except a couple checkins last net time.... BREAK John NX6DX are you copying us OK on MFSK-32? < K7KY Before RSID: <<2015-12-09T04:57Z MFSK-32 @ 1498>>

100% cp on this mode as well. I have a pretty decent antenna…..160-mtr dipole at abt 60ft, and in the middle of a vineyard on Tindall Ranch rd. can
“hear” everyone fb. I will also try to check in on the Olivia net on Monday nights. should be fun. OK, like Mindy, I have to get something for dinner
going. Tnx for having the net available .

Nick, what are you using for a desktop over there? I wanna see if I can help you reduce the load on your old laptop.

Before RSID: <<2015-12-09T05:02Z MFSK-32 @ 1499>>
It’s a Dell Inspiron 4100. It came with a Pentium 3, 800 MHz or so. I slapped a 1.2 GHz in it and it has been running decently for the most part. I don’t
think CPU load is the problem – it’s usually around 15-25% load when decoding MFSK32. It just acts weird sometimes. Maybe half the time when I close
fldigi, then go to shutdown Windows, it says that fldigi is not responding. Tonight it locked up and sat at 100% CPU load until I killed the exe. Not sure
what’s going on, it seems like older versions were a bit more stable. I haven’t updated it since Doug reported issues getting newer ones to run on XP (as
in, not at all, hehe). I’ll look around to see what else I can do, but the laptop has lived a useful life :). de KI6RIT

fb on all Doug. CP is 100 now .. concx are now getting right with god. hihih

Okay, will, I have an old laptop that I repurposed and it’s now at nx6dx station.. about same vitage as your laptop. it’s running mint with KDE. KDE is a
huge hog… But I was going to say if you are using either KDE or Gnome, I can help you find a much lighter desktop that really does a great job and
takes very little system resources. If you are using Windows, then never mind “as Rita would say on SNL!”. anyway, don’t chuck the thing into the
garbage, under stand if you want a newer sytem, good for you, but we can make that thing sing with linux and a very light desktop.

okay, glad you got it under control and when the time comes, lets play!

okay, I need to eat something too. had an early dinner at 2pm but it seems to have worn off!
hihi

good working you tonight nick. Take care and 73
de ke6sls k

KI6RIT NIck one last thought.. Dave W1HKJ has just released a new version of fldigi and it includes support for XP, so it may work OK for you…
give it a try when you have time…. Thanks to all you guys for coming tonight…. it’s been lot’s of fun… cu next week… 73 Doug K7KY sk
Before RSID: <<2015-12-09T05:10Z MFSK-32 @ 1508>>

ally I wouldn’t mind putting Linux on here and using that, but it’s kind of a shared laptop and I think some people would have a cow if it
wasn’t Windows. I’ll give the new fldigi a try, I’ll definitely make sure to keep the current one on here just in case I run into problems. de KI6RIT

KE6SLS And, a last thought for jaye… Im moving along with Mint 17.2 and taking an online linux course… I’d like to email a couple
questions so I can install the latest version of fldigi… Mint only knows an old version… cu < K7KY Before RSID: <<2015-12-09T05:12Z MFSK-32 @ 1500>>

k7ky de ke6sls
no worries om. I’ll set you up with the latest repo so you get the current FLx on your system.
Hamil is been really great over at Ubuntu and we keep current on the Debian list so I keep tourchering him and the group. I have a few other things to
bring up too, I want to make it possible for flmsg and flamp to be a full particapant and have them updated as the hackers release them. I think it’s really
important..

Okay ya’ll. You take care and don’t let the storm winds blow your lawn chairs over the fence.

de ke6sls
73 and nite night.
