ORCA Alert!  This report from Steve K6ETA:

Here in Sonoma County as in several other op areas of Northern California we are bracing for a 3-5 day power outage due to extreme fire danger. The Sonoma fires of exactly 2 years ago happened during the same weather pattern and condx we see now and the power utilities are going to turn off large parts of the grid until the dry Easterly winds pass.  The grid precautions are scheduled to happen at approximately 0400 local tomorrow.

The Sonoma County EOC was activated yesterday and our ACS units will activate tomorrow and are expected to remain active for 5 days. Many of our municipalities will be opening their EOCs if they aren’t already. We will be ready to assist once again with shelters, fire spotting and health & welfare logistics for several days. This is not a drill!

Steve will be updating his report every evening at 0230z/1930p, 3.581. Please check 3.581 to stay current with the situation in case we need to support them. They may need us to relay traffic.

The electric grid is also down in Humboldt county where Jaye KE6SLS lives in Eureka. He reports gasoline is gone and grocery stores are selling meat at 50%. Jaye’s generator is supporting refrigeration in four adjacent homes. Their internet is also down. Jaye has activated Humboldt’s Emergency Phone net on 3.955. He will also be reporting every evening at 0230z/1930p, 3.581.  Tune in to stay current and see if they need our support.
———-
80m was both good and poor, depending on time and QTH, but overall a bit better.  Steve’s report about turning electricity off for 800k people was a surprise; a bold attempt to thwart potential fire storms driven by extreme winds.  It’s good to see how well prepared the Amateur community is in the SF Bay region.

Mindy W7ZAP chose all MFSK modes for the FLAMP exercise and filled all stations in two passes. Half the stations CONFIRMED MFSK-128 on the first pass including Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT. The MFSK mode is hard to top. Check-ins were light tonight with Ops in Cedar City,UT and Eureka,CA attending ARC meetings. Except for Ken KR7KR who skipped the Rainbow Canyon meeting for a family event; we were happy to have him aboard.

Following the net, we sent a sample Radiogram in FLAMP. We’ll be using Radiograms more in the future. The current Oregon SET exercise is using Radiograms.  Most Health & Welfare traffic uses the Radiogram form. It’s an easy form to learn. They’re limited to 25 words.

Thanks for following our Ck-In protocol.  It makes ck-in easier for us. I was fumbling a bit tonight while changing Bruce KB7VX’s QTH in the logger. I must have changed it three times before getting it right.  My central processor is fully engaged at ck-in; there’s no idle capacity for surprises. We appreciate your help with managing the net.

Thanks for working with us again tonite.  We look forward to seeing you again next Tuesday evening. Don’t forget to monitor 3.581 @ 0230z for the grid-down reports.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 08/Oct/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex140.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Please use the ORCA ck-in routine. Send only your ‘CALL’ to ck-in and participate.
Send ‘CALL IN&OUT’ when you want to monitor only. That’s all we need to log you in.
Check-In is a busy time at this end. We include more information in our roster than
usual and work quickly to confirm each station while we switch between applications
to copy and paste the data into FLMSG. A brief and concise Ck-In helps us keep up with
the flow and compile the roster. If you must send more, please keep it on one line.
Send personal/station information as you like in the Comment round. We’re always
interested in station and reception details.

Health and Welfare traffic usually uses the Radiogram form in FLMSG. We’ll be doing
more with Radiogram. It’s a bit more work than some of the other forms, but once you
understand how to fill a few odd boxes, it’s actually quite easy. I’ll send a sample
Radiogram in FLAMP immediately following the net. Eventually, we’ll use Radiogram to
practice off-net-frequency traffic.

FLDIGI Manual 4.0, Ch8, p415, ‘Installing FLDIGI on a Thumb Drive’.
I’ve been running the net from a thumbdrive for six weeks w/o issue. I can pop the drive
out and be back up quickly using our spare Toughbook Tablet or Mindy’s Tablet. All data
and files are kept on the drive. It wasn’t difficult to configure and it’s easy to maintain.

If you need a fill, pse use pre-tone there may be others tnx < K7KY

OK here’s Steve K6ETA’s fire danger report:
Here in Sonoma County as in several other op areas of Northern California we are bracing for a 3-5 day power outage due to extreme fire danger. The Sonoma fires of

exactly 2 years ago happened during the same weather pattern and condx we see now and the power utilities are going to turn off large parts of the grid until the dry

Easterly winds pass. The grid precautions are scheduled to happen at approximately 0400 local tomorrow.

The Sonoma County EOC was activated yesterday and our ACS units will activate tomorrow and are expected to remain active for 5 days. Many of our municipalities will be

opening their EOCs if they aren’t already. We will be ready to assist once again with shelters, fire spotting and health & welfare logistics for several days. This is

not a drill!

< K7KY

Steve K6ETA is willing to give daily fire reports on 3.581. We can monitor the freq at our regular time 1930p 0230z for his report. There is the ERC digital net at

that time on Wed, but I’m sure Dave K7DV would be happy to host the report. < K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
