We made a couple more errors than usual tonight. Thankfully, they weren’t major. We mistakenly thought Dan W6CTT in Clovis,CA was a 1st time Ck-In, but later realized his 1st Ck-In was last week. Not everyone gets two ORCA Welcomes. We were correct in Welcoming 1st time Ck-In Ian KE7NKR in Forest Grove,OR. Hats-Off to Ian; he correctly worked the NBEMS Exercise on his 1st Ck-In! Most unusual. Whenever an Oregon station joins ORCA, we’re reminded of how long we waited for Oregon members. Oddly, we were the only Oregon stations on OR/CA DIGITAL NET for years. You might expect us to have lots of OR/CA Ops, but it took awhile.

Thanks for working the net w/ORCA Protocol. It really makes a difference in brevity and efficiency. We get a lot done in an hour and our nets usually run like clockwork. Tonight, with 6 stations working the NBEMS Exercise and 24 Ops on the Roster, we wrapped the main net in 56min. This says as much about our members as it does our Protocols.

Topics re-posted from Announcements:
ORCA member Neil W0NRP with the Missouri Digital Emergency Service in Kansas City,MO is experimenting with ARQ for digital nets. It looks interesting. Here’s the thread: https://tinyurl.com/xxk28awp

We’ll experiment with Macros in the Comment Round again on 22/Nov/22. Our focus will be twofold. 1st, we’ll temporarily alter the Path Evaluation Macro for immediate use w/o Saving it. It’s occasionally expedient to quickly alter a Macro on-the-fly for one-time use. We do this by Editing, clicking ‘Apply’, but NOT Saving the Edit. Although we’ve not Saved our Edit, clicking ‘Apply’ makes it available until we close FLDIGI or switch to another Macro set. Either action will revert the un-Saved Macro to it’s original form.

2nd, we’ll begin using the Path Evaluation Macro to evaluate path and adjust TX power. You’ll alter the original Path Evaluation Macro V2 in two ways. 1st, you’ll add two values to the text string, ‘ORCA < <MYCALL>’. These values are your usual power setting and a lower value for this Comment Round ie: ‘ORCA < <MYCALL> 35/15w’. The 2nd temporary change is removing the <RX> Tag. Following these Edits, click ‘Apply, but DO NOT SAVE. The Edited Macro reverts to it’s original form when FLDIGI is closed or you switch Macro files.

Practice making Macro changes on-the-fly w/o Saving b4 22/Nov/22. On the 22nd, make these changes just b4 Comments. Send the Path Macro 1st. Choose a lower than usual Power setting and add that info to the Macro as instructed. With the <RX> Tag removed, TX remains ON; your image and Comments flow in 1 seamless transmission. When you next change Macro sets or close FLDIGI, your Path Macro reverts to original form.

We also want to focus on hardening our stations for Emergency operations. Sustainable power is always a concern in emergencies. Conserving transmit power helps keep us on the air. Let’s be mindful of using minimal power when it’s just practice. When it’s critical, we’ll manage power by cultivated habit.

More about TxID.  A key ORCA Protocol is working the net w/TxID OFF. There are 2 exceptions:
1) When Relaying call to Ck-In for NCS
2) When changing Mode in Traffic or Comment Round

If you use ORCA Macros to Ck-In and to Relay the Ck-In call, they automatically enable and disable TxID. When you change Modes for Traffic or Comments, you must enable & disable TxID consciously. Incoming Ops are learning ORCA Protocol by observing net operations. We want to present our best example of efficient digital networking, enabling them to develop good operating habits from the outset.

Keep these nets in mind; they’re conducted by ORCA Colleagues. 4 digital nets, M-Thurs on 3.581mhz, our Western-US digital watering-hole, and one Winlink net:

Monday, Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net, 1845p/0245z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, KE6SLS/NCS (regional)

Tuesday, ORCA DIGITAL NET, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K7KY & W7ZAP/NCS, http://orcadigitalnet.com/ (W/USA)

Wednesday, NA ID ERC Digital Net, 1800m/0200z, 3.581+1500, Mode varies, K7DV/NCS (regional)

Wednesday, HUMCO Winlink Wednesday Net, Matthew KN7CEI/NCS, Message KN6CEI w/CALL,NAME,QTH, https://humboldtwinlinkwednesday.net/

Thanks for taking time to practice with us again tonight. We appreciate your participation and support. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Unless announced otherwise, an NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round is a weekly event. Monitors(QNX/Lurkers) can work the Exercises silently and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

We’ve passed DST Fallback and darkness comes an hour earlier. This should improve condx for us on 80m. Hopefully, more of our Eastern colleagues can participate.

Check this out: ORCA member Neil W0NRP with the Missouri Digital Emergency Service in Kansas City,MO is experimenting with using ARQ for digital nets.

Practice making Macro changes on-the-fly w/o Saving b4 22/Nov/22. On the 22nd, make these changes just b4 Comments. Send the Path Macro 1st. With the <RX> Tag removed, TX remains ON; your image and Comments flow in 1 seamless transmission. When you next change Macro sets or close FLDIGI, your Path Macro reverts to original form.

Today, 08/Nov/22, is a significant day in America. It may turn out more significant than usual. There’s potential for increasing social disorder this Winter.  Instead of practicing, we may find ourselves working H&W traffic. Should we be called to service, we want to be Ready. We need a few more Ops capable of running digital nets. Now is a good time to expand your skill-set.

We also want to focus on hardening our stations for Emergencies. Sustainable power is always a concern in emergencies. Conserving transmit power helps keep us on the air. Let’s be mindful of using minimal power when it’s just practice. When it’s critical, we’ll manage power by cultivated habit.

Yes, I had an issue with the sound card when I transmitted my traffic. Suddenly I saw ALC go very high; you saw my signal change. I have since unplugged and reinserted the interface and restarted fldigi, and also reduced the sound card drive level. Maybe that will help for now. I have a couple new USB hubs on the way, and maybe that will help. < KS6M

At check-in I had W7ZAP coming in at s9+5, but only showing s/n 0 to +1 dB on FLDigi w ith a noise level here of big fat zero on the meter. KJ7VGV was only an s8, but showing +9 dB. Seems a bit counter ntuitive to me. All check-ins were 100% kbd at my QTH this eve. Only thing good about ending DST is having 80m back earlier IMO. I have long wanted to play with ARQ in FLDigi. Will definitely check out that link. TU!
Cursor whip-sawing again during OFDM-500. Wound up settling at 1520 wf. I was too slow in getting it manually re-adjusted.
All exercise FLAmps were 100% copy for me tonight except for KS6M where I was also missing block #2 only.

First the Good news:  We have been getting real rain right here in Humboldt county, former home of the RAIN FOREST.
The Bad news: It is cold, wet, and dark.  Winter sucks  Have been exceptionally QRL (busy) with ham club last few days. Our club was granted several hundred M$ licenses for M365.  Obviously, I don’t have any M$ operating systems, however, they have made it available via web browser.  Say the least, I am excited to help simplify many of our club communications/planning/etc.  This also gives us many terabytes of storage which should help us keep web hosting costs down.  MUCH to learn, but grateful to our members that are making this possible.
I did some mentoring with fellow ham yesterday.  Helped her set up & use her Signalink & FLDigi.  She is completely new to the digital world and I hope she will check in here and use this net as a formal learning resource.  She has a lot to learn and I’m confident she will do will with FLDigi and supporting tools.
I noticed Neil W0NRP post today on Eham.net and thought that might be an interesting idea.  I think he is set up for Thor.
Veterans day is Friday.  Tipping my hat to all our amazing vets out there!  Thank you for your service! Speaking of veterans day, isn’t there a military birthday coming up this week?  Hmmmmm . . .     URRRRRAHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!
Tonight I am working with aggressive attenuation.  My normal attenuator is active, and my RF gain is at 50%, with my AGC in fast mode. This is helping my copy with NCS fading with multipath.
I would warn our members who are running at 100 watts, if your rig is a 100 watt radio, you are very likely to fry your finals at this power in digital modes.  Our radios are NOT 100% duty cycle (eg commercial rated finals.)  Typically, your maximum output power on digital modes is half the rated maximum output power of your radio. Great to see the mode switches tonight.  Good work all!
John, perhaps pull the plugs/connectors from radio/computer etc just to make sure you have a good connection to everything.  Now that we are in higher humidity, it can cause issues for us.  Good luck!
Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it! 73 de ke6sls k
