Anticipating evening band condx after reading the on-line predictions is tricky. 80m was again predicted to be ‘very quiet’; that usually means weak and difficult, but not so these days. Doug selected Exercise modes expecting tough conditions, so the Exercise file was easily CONFIRMED in two passes. We chose THOR-22 for the 3rd wrap-up pass, but switched to MFSK-32 and asked Gene W1EEP to relay the file for Monitoring stations. Four stations took advantage of the after-net Monitor’s Session.

If you’ve been with us for a few years, you probably notice that errors don’t usually derail net flow. We’re a Training net; mistakes are normal and we’re better at resolving them w/o losing focus. Digital networking is easy when everything works correctly. Resolving digital-station issues on the fly requires knowledge, experience, and practice.

As a Training Net, we strive to set a good example for incoming stations. Our Ck-In Protocol directs participating stations to ck-in with CALLSIGN only. That means sending only your CALLSIGN once or twice in CAPS. If you’ve checked in once, we remember your Name and QTH; please don’t send them. If you’re Monitoring, send CALLSIGN QNX. Incoming Ops are learning net operations by observation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Tuesdays are BASIC NBEMS Exercise sessions. Tonight we’ll run the Basic NBEMS Exercise. No Traffic Round.
Monitoring (QNX) stations can Fill or CONFIRM the Exercise file in the Monitor’s Session directly after net.

Last week, we experimented with the Path Evaluation Macro. The seven Active stations all sent our test-image by macro in the
Comment Round and everyone emailed us the two images they printed best. It revealed which of the seven stations were best copied
that evening.

“Top 3 Best-Heard stations:
W6ADZ:   7
KG7VVN: 4
KJ7VGV:  3”

Path Macro exercises will help identify our best Relay stations. If condx continue to range from awful to OK, it may take awhile. We’ll
also work on our Macro skills occasionally by Altering the Macro. The exercise revealed two areas for improvement: Reading
Comprehension and Instruction writing. Reading Comprehension is a challenge for everyone. Nearly everyone has room for improveme
nt. Clear and concise written instructions is a challenge for NCS. We’re working on it.

While downloading the Path Macro instructions and image, some Ops copied the representative thumbnail instead of downloading
ORCAtest.png. Had we anticipated this, we would have removed the thumbnail. We didn’t think much about the thumbnail as it’s a
WordPress convention. We didn’t realize the potential for error. The thumbnail is smaller with a different name. The wrong file-name
was a clue that something was amiss.

Understanding written instructions is fundamental to processing traffic correctly and clear and concise instructions are basic to
comprehension. Our renewed focus on Instruction writing should help us produce a solid guide for conducting the Basic NBEMS
Exercise. We’re working on that too.

When ORCA DIGITAL NET was well established, we began looking for ways to attract and train potential Net Control Stations. Those
efforts produced no fruit. No worries, it’s not everyone ambition to NCS a digital net. And, it’s not like no-one is running digital nets;
there are numerous ORCA Ops leading VHF digital training nets. Digital networking on HF is more challenging than VHF/UHF. Still, it’s
the same general format as VHF with the additional vagaries of HF band condx.

Here’s another perspective on learning some or all of the digital NCS role. Out West, we have only five experienced digital HF NCS.
Dave K7DV in Idaho, Jaye KE6SLS and Steve K6ETA in California, and Mindy W7ZAP & Doug K7KY in Oregon. A little East of us is
Steve W7WSV and Joe W7LUX in Arizona. Both were Relays & Alternate/NCS for the SATERN digital net until it was shuttered early last
year. Even the most experienced NCS among us often cannot connect the entire net. Witness condx effecting Western Digital Net lately.
WDN routinely needs Relays these days.

In an extended emergency operation, we will need more Ops with NCS skills, or at minimum, enough experience to relieve the regular
NCSs. This observation underlies our current interest in volunteers to run some of the Basic NBEMS Exercises. This brief time-on-air will
be invaluable. We’re currently writing the ‘how to’ page for running the Basic NBEMS Exercise. We plan to make this an interesting and
enjoyable experience. Expanding and enhancing our digital skills will strengthen the digital networking community. Our goal is to be
prepared.

Good exercise & mode selection Doug.

To have FLAMP follow FLDIGI modes enable “Auto sync FLAMP to FLDIGI mode selector” on FLAMP CONFIGURE Tab.
Otherwise FLAMP will TX in the last mode it RX

NCS < WB7EUX – We’ve had several sunny days in a row with somewhat warmer temps, highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.
Some of the snow has melted but we still have lots.

The POTA information was great and I plan to look it up. We have three Oregon State Parks within Wallowa County that are easy drives
for us: one mile, six miles, and 30 miles. Great fun to break up the winter and a chance to use the KX3 on the road!

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for great practice. All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

It may be goodbye to Jun-uary, but it is certainly hello Feb-ru- ly here in No. Cal. High temp. of 67 today. Low last night of 51. Not
even a trace of rain for about a month now. None in the forecast, either. I live in a heavily wooded area so…

Great band conditions. EVERYONE seemed to have a monster station running this eve.

Thanks and 73.

Spent the day at Panguitch Lake again trying to outsmart trout! Apparently they didn’t care too much for my dead worms? Luckily my
brain is slightly larger than theirs and I used Power Bait to bag 3 of them! About $15 a pound for fine trout filets when you account for
gas.

Following RCARC meeting on Zoom since I am worn out catching trout!

Magic, installed new Rpi 64 bit OS, Working VERY well.  Only set up
basic fldigi, but will continue with all the ham radio configs. This
makes my pi use all 8gb of RAM which is a very good thing.

Phoned bunch of new hams.  I am giddy to hear them OTA ASAP!  too much
patience not enough GOTTA GET ON THE AIR mentality.  Love these guys
and can’t wait to see them active.

Tooo much sunshine.  Officially requesting all ops to do rain dance,
pray for rain/snow, and uncover stuff like wood piles, classic cars
etc to invoke mother nature to LET IT RAIN.

Ran into old navy vet on js8call today.  Guess I had a phone qso with
him helping him get on the air.  Hoped to see him here tonight, but
glad I was able to help him!  Funny how I can’t recall these things
any more, but glad he remembered me

Have a “beer casserole” in the oven.  Nice way to top off another
