Band condx were much better than last week when it took five of us to compile the Roster. Near-by stations were easier to work tonight. Last week, we needed Relays to log stations to our N/S. The band continues to improve for more distant stations.

We had to suspend ck-in for a few minutes when Doug somehow zapped five stations from the middle of the log. It took a few minutes to scroll up in the RX buffer and retrieve them, one by one. He was adding Active stations to macro buttons, preparing to back-up the NBEMS Exercise. A teaching moment for NCS.

There were few glitches tonight. Our nets usually run smoothly. Considering net speed and complexity, we rarely have net-flow issues. It’s a reflection of your digital credentials.

Here’s what’s happening in December. No NBEMS Exercise for the Holidays.

14/Dec/21 Mode Shoot-Out during the NBEMS Exercise:

OFDM-500F, 500hz, & OFDM-750F, 750hz
vs
PSK-500R, 500hz, & PSK125RC5, 850hz

Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday, same time and freq as ORCA.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. We appreciate your support and participation. We wish you a pleasant and peaceful Christmas Season. Stay alert; stay healthy!

Good 2 see you all this eveing    tnx 4 ur patience during ck-in I lost 5 stations somehow and had to get them from the RX buffer just like you do during the NBMES Exercise    BK

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise includes the FLMSG form ICS-309. Pay close attention to file naming instructions. URCALL is a place-holder for your CALLSIGN, not part of the file name. Replace URCALL with your CALLSIGN. This keeps your filename consistent with convention, and groups your file with others named similarly.

Last month, our Mode Shoot-Out compared OFDM and PSK-R based on word-speed. In that exercise, OFDM-500F & 750F outperformed PSK-250RC5 & PSK-500R. Experimenting with different modes helps develop a working knowledge of many modes, enabling us to more quickly match mode to condx when transmission time is critical.

Next week’s NBEMS Exercise includes another Mode Shoot-Out. We’ll compare OFDM to PSK-R modes of similar bandwidth. OFDM and PSK modes are most suitable for VHF operations, but they can move large files quickly when band condx are favorable.

Next week’s Mode Shoot-Out, OFDM VS PSK-R:
OFDM-500F, 500hz, & OFDM-750F, 750hz
vs
PSK-500R, 500hz, & PSK125RC5, 850hz

While we train and practice to support civic agencies with digital emergency communications, we’re also preparing to support each other and our home communities. Social, political, and financial conditions in America today are unprecedented. Some of our major cities lack Law & Order. Our health care professionals are divided about the Pandemic’s cause and cure. The script seems to change almost daily. Conditions may decline further this Winter; power-grid and internet failures are strong possibilities. It would be well for us to establish solid networking links between our digital VHF and HF nets. Food for thought.

Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < K7KY

Good evening everyone! This is our last week of classes with finals next week!  Lots left to do!

Next week we have our radio club Christmas party so I will not be on, and then we will head to Arizona to visit family!  Not sure if I will be able to get in for a few weeks.

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! 73s!

NCS < WB7EUX – Waiting for a winter storm to arrive tonight. We’re hoping for lots of snow in the mountains. Snow is sparse now.

We’re settled in for the remainder of the holiday season with lots of ongoing conversations with friends and family who live a long way off.

Hats off to Dennis W6DLW for hanging in there and persistence. Seems that’s what a lot of traffic handling is about along with composure.

Net control was strong at +15db tonight. Last week I could only hear two stations, neither of which were the NCS. All the best to the net and especially Doug and Mindy for the valuable training they provide. 73 de WB7EUX

ORCA NCS< W7ZAP, wow, this month is moving to fast.  This Thursday the 9th we have the CERT/EComm Christmas Dinner. Our Ham Club will then hold its annual Christmas Party next Tuesday the 14th.  Tomorrow is the Quarterly Southwest Utah Healthcare Preparedness Coalition Regional Communications Drill. “This is a communications exercise for Emergency Support Function 8 (Public Health & Medical Services”).  I’ll be the NCS for Iron County portion (VHF) voice.  Brad (WA7HHE) will be doing the HF portion.  We are expecting 2 to 4 inches of snow over the next few days.
Not much more going on. Have a great week. Be safe. 73 to all. W6DLW
