ORCA Rosters are increasing; we’re now logging 30+/- Ops weekly. We always log more Ops in Winter than Summer; one Winter we logged 41 Ck-Ins. Summer usually trims the Roster. No surprise. Beginning next session, 15/Mar/23, Early Ck-In will start @ 0145z/1845p, reducing doubles and coat-tails. Welcome back to Craig KD7CL, who relocated to Yuma, AZ.

Notes to newer ORCA Ops: The best way to learn NBEMS Exercises is working them while Monitoring (QNX) and checking your work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. NBEMS Exercises, Traffic Round, and Comment Round make up the bulk of net-time. We try to keep ORCA sessions to one hour. We want to use our hour wisely. Time is valuable to everyone. Some stations are 2 time zones away; when we begin, it’s already late for them.

Checking in w/ORCA Protocol is important. We’re a training net. Along with digital traffic-handling, we’re improving our reading comprehension and situational awareness. When we don’t understand written instructions, we’re unable to implement them. When we don’t pay attention to net flow and miss NCS calling, it slows net operations. Not a big deal on a Training net, but we don’t want to delay critical traffic on an Emergency net. Practicing incorrectly reinforces poor operating routines. Here again is ORCA Ck-In Protocol:

CALLSIGN Active, participating in all net events
CALLSIGN QNX Ck-ing in&out, Monitoring
CALLSIGN,NAME,QTH,QNX 1st Ck-In only, we’ll remember you

Disable TxID, Pre-Tone, & CK-IN w/ALL CAPS. We parse CAPS more quickly. CAPS separate your CK-IN TEXT from HF noise. We run the net w/squelch open to catch weak signals. Our log has lots of noise.

That’s all we want at Ck-In. Signal reports, power setting, weather, etc, belong in Comments. If we want more info, we’ll ask. We get a lot of practice in an hour because members follow protocol and the net flows efficiently. Our website has Ck-In Macros that check you in correctly and set a couple net protocols in the background. Installing and using them is a good beginning for learning the value of Macros in digital operations.

Our Monitor’s Session Fills incomplete files and CONFIRMS Exercise files for Monitoring stations. That’s it’s prime purpose. We can also answer questions. If you need more than Fills or CONFIRMATION, we may ask you to wait until we help those wanting to Fill or CONFIRM files. We take general comments from Monitors & Lurkers before closing the main net.

ORCA is structured for self-motivated, self-evaluating, Ops. We don’t have time during nets to teach basic digital networking and basic NBEMS software operations. You can learn most of what you need to work the net by observation. Don’t be hasty; there no reward for jumping into the net quickly. We’re happy to help you get oriented or resolve issues by email, phone, or off-net/on-air. Our objective is to conduct training/practice nets that provide the most benefit to the most Ops. A core group of two dozen Ops make this weekly learning experience possible. Hats-Off to each of them for their ongoing participation and support. Without their regular participation, we be another roundtable.

Thanks for emailing original TEST images for the Net Log.

^ri tyaziskfaekANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise features FLMSG form ICS-213. Don KJ7VGV will conduct the Exercise. NBEMS Exercise questions primarily simulate message content, making Exercises more realistic. Pedestrian or pithy, the questions make useful Reading Comprehension practice. When we don’t parse instructions correctly, we’re unlikely to implement them fully

FLAMP routine at ORCA: Training nets usually have multiple receiving stations. To avoid doubles, NCS calls them in order for Reports. When you are the only Op receiving a file, send your Report directly w/o waiting to be prompted. There’s only you and NCS; no problem w/doubles. When there’s more than one receiver, NCS will prompt you.

We’re sad to report the passing of ORCA DIGITIAL NET Plank Owner, Leonard Smith KA7VMW, on 22 February 2023. In 2013, Leonard was instrumental in founding the original ORCA EMERGENCY NET that spun-off ORCA DIGITAL NET. He learned digital communication s as an Army Radioman and shared his expertise with his colleagues in Del Norte County,CA and Curry County,OR. He was a long-time member of Del Norte ARC. Leonard was a respected Elmer and a seasoned Net Control Station. Our best wishes to Leonard’s family, friends, and colleagues. God Speed Leonard, we miss you.

We’ll pause for a few moments of silence for Leonard KA7VMW …

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Don KJ7VGV < W7ZAP<@TXRSID:on>

Good exercise Don. You had a full house tonight. PSK-500R was a
miss, but did get some blocks thru. THOR-50×1 did quite well.

Here’s the breakdown of the NBEMS mode RX:
PSK-500R: 0 stns
THOR-50×1: 7 stns
MFSK-32: 1 stns

Remember that ur 1st priority in the NBEMS exe is to send ur
REPORT to NCS. Working the exe is secondary. I know it’s easy to
feel jammed, just do ur best :-)

Exercises are TXed in the TRAFFIC round. NBEMS round u TX ur
REPORTS.

NetComments Macro learned from ORCA :)

Solid S8+ Signal tonight Mindy

Appologys for muddying the waters in the excersise confirmations, i got ahead of myself.

On VidID checkin macro dont forget to set modem back to net mode
I was wondering why i stopped decoding the net HIHI

On the first PSK500 pass i missed the first 3 blocks till i narrowed my filter and then confirmed every further block
Would most likely have confirmed PSK-500R if my filter was narrowed from the start.

Ive found a mystery signal on 40m ive been having trouble identifying
If anyone is good at mysterys, my email is on QRZ

NCS < WB7EUX – Thanks for another educational net.

I opened google maps and discovered that KD0NBH and K0KEX are about in the same latitude so I would say distance from NCS is about the same. Nice twist for an exercise. Thanks to our distant ops John KD0NBH and Rick K0KEX for braving the ether!

This was the first time I’ve changed modes when sending my traffic. Stage fright.

Anxiously awaiting a glimmer of spring. . . Nope, no glimmer :-)

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

late Thursday another storm is coming with rain through next Wednesday. There is a flood warning for the lower Sierras with this next storm. Otherwise life is good when you wake up on this side of the ground everyday.

It appears Idaho was not a good path for me tonight. Sorry

Well, what to say about the NBMES Exercise. A bit of a Cluster-Cluck. No aspersions on NCS. One station answered no Report calls, but CONFIRMED the file for Traffic Round??? It’s best to learn the Exercises in the Monitor’ Session. You may have heard this a few times already. Incoming stations should work learn NBEMS Exercises in the after-net Monitor’s Session. We go to some extra effort to provide an easier learning platform. When you skip Reporting to work the Exercise, you’re not working the Exercise correctly. During the Exercise, you only Report. Completed Exercise files go in Traffic Round. This information is all detailed in the Quick-Start Guide.

NBEMS Exercise question answer: KD0NBH John Kansas City,MO Snowing here too!

If you have Pre-Signal Tone Active, please disable it for ORCA. BTN < Doug K7KY

Good comments Doug. ANd I’d add to use ur Tune signal during ck-in… not everyone does.. and listen for others. It’s hard when the band is tough.

Limited signal report tonight. I also attended our HARC meeting
via zoom tonight. Remember, this is an antique IBM think pad I am
using. Had zoom going, all the FLDigi software etc. I don’t think
any other OS would have worked! My old computer can multi-task, but
I can’t! :)

Winter still has us very much in it’s grips. 3/4″ more rain/sleet
here. Snow about 1000′ which is making it really tough for a lot of
our folks in the hills surrounding Eureka.

FLA reports: 100% = w7zap, k7huh, n6fpv, wb7eux, ki7vlv, kr7kr,

Good work on a heavy night!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

There’s no method or system for Reporting on an FLMSG file. You would have to have it resent. we do resend the roster when someone asks, but it seldom happens. btu < K7KY

W7LPN < K7KY Curly this session, Monitor’s Session, is so Ops like uself can work the NBEMS Exercise silentlly as a QNX ck-in and CONFIRM or Fill files. We take comments from QNX Ops at the end of net and then fill and CONFIRM files 4 QNX Ops after net. It lets the regular Ops QRT and save a bit of evening time while we work with the incoming Ops who are learning the Exercises. All this is explained in the Quick-start guide @ our website at least I think it does (-: btu < K7KY

ORCA/NCS < N6FPV

Just came back from running to the store, I see there is still activity :) Next week I am going to start taking note of signal reports and copy %, I will admit tonight I only had a good copy on a few stations, hopefully next week propogation will be better. Digital modes are my favorite of all the HAM activities, wish I had learned of ORCA and the other similar digital nets sooner (I will be participating in WDN on Thursday as well). Anyway, I am back off to FT8 now, 73s! N6FPV k

N6FPV < K7KY RR Matt good 2 hv u aboard another digital Op is always welcome b4 u work on signal reports it would be good to be sure u hv the Exercises down well. Incoming Ops usually jump into the Exercise and while working on the tasks, forget to monitor net flow and miss NCS calling for them. it takes some time to learn to pay attention to NCS while working the exercises. you’ll note that often we see Ops miss answering NCS during the exercise, but then have the Exercise file ready 4 Traffic Round. Working the Exercise correctly is the Exercise anyway, tonight was not usual and stuff does go astray now & then btu < K7KY

Yes I noticed it was a little chatoic, but I am a fast learner and I am pretty good with multitasking, I was able to pretty easily get the flow of how this net works, and I believe I can pretty easily monitor and do the exercise, only practice and trying will tell though :).

FB Matt ORCA is a self directing and self evaluating training net ur off to a good start and I know u’ll do well. You may enjoy youself enough to want to run some digital nets. WDN is looking for NCS and it may interest you when you get settled in. and, we have a program where Guest NCS runs the NBEMS Exercise once per month as Don KJ7VGV did this evening. u can keep these things in mind as u progress. My typing is falling apart tonite btu < K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
