———–

We began with better than usual band condx, but it didn’t last. By net end, short skip vanished taking John KS6M in Oakland,CA and Steve K6ETA in Petaluma,CA out of contact. Some paths worked only one way. Ed KG5DGI in Aztec,NM heard us clearly, but we didn’t copy him, the reverse of his usual situation. Good overall condx did persist through the FLAMP Exercise. We began with PSK250-RC2, a Robust (R in name = Robust) mode with FEC (Forward Error Correction). It CONFIRMED two of eight stations. At 440wpm and 600hz, it’s relatively fast and narrow. It will be useful in better condx. THOR-50×1 CONFIRMED four of the remaining five stations. That station needed the entire file. Tom WB7EUX made that relay in MFSK-32, completing the Exercise. THOR-50×1 and MFSK-32 are also FEC.

Ck-In again went smoothly. Thanks so much for waiting until I reply to the last station before you call; logging 25 Ops was much easier than my last session of 35. 35 is our record Roster. Nearly everyone is following ck-in protocol, sending only what we need printed on one line. It makes compiling the Roster easier and teaches ORCA ck-in Protocol to new stations by example.

Great results in the FLAMP OPTIONAL Exercise. Five of six stations Aced it; one station missed only one step. Reading Comprehension is fundamental to all ORCA Exercises. To implement written instructions, we must first comprehend them. We’re continually impressed with how easy most ORCA Ops make this brisk and complex Exercise appear. It’s not easy; it requires focus and practice. Hats off to each of you. You’ll definitely be an asset on any digital Traffic or Emergency net. Working together, we’re developing broad digital-net protocols and skills.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex190.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP. This exercise simulates supporting NCS by copy/paste Relay.

The session for Monitoring stations an net-end is working well. We’ve run it three times now and FILLED and CONFIRMED files each time. It’s only taken an extra ten minutes or so. We hope a couple ORCA members will be interested to run this brief session now and then. It’s easy to do; some Monitoring and visiting stations need to fill the original exercise file. Some want their Optional Exercise file CONFIRMED.

We participated in Oregon’s Fall SET 2020 last Saturday. Curry Co,OR had more local participation than usual. Craig KD7CL, ORCA Op and Coos County,OR ARES EC, incorporated EyeWarn into the Exercise with notable results. EyeWarn employs Ops with handhelds to report local conditions to Incident Command. It leverages newer Amateurs with limited experience and equipment into useful information gathering RADOs. Besides Phone, they also reported digitally using AndFLMSG. It was our first experience working data modes across Repeaters. We communicated with North Curry Co and Coos County across linked repeaters. We used FLDIGI, they used AndFLMSG on their smart phones effective AndFLMSG training program and Fall SET 2020 Exercise. EyeWarn may complement your local EMCOMM program too:

Please email both Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

It has been frustrating trying to participate in the MARS COMEX Exercise on 60 M. The info on the WWV announcement that’s supposed to have specific details in it–has none. Neither does the website they send you to. Finally got a partial sked on dates this AM thanks to Joe, W7LUX when he asked one MARS op for some info.
