Tonight may be the best band condx this Summer. We logged John KD0NBH in Kansas City,MO in Early Ck-In. John usually has to wait until net-end to Ck-In. Steve W7WSV also checked-in Early from Mesa,AZ. He also usually does better later in the evening. Signs of early Fall?

We thought band condx would be good tonight and picked OFDM-750F & OFDM-500F for the NBEMS Exercise. OFDM is fast, but not robust. Brad WA7HHE in Cedar City,UT CONFIRMED the 1st pass in OFDM-750F & four more stations CONFIRMED the 2nd pass in OFDM-500F. MFSK-32 CONFIRMED the final four stations. Our Exercise records were faulty. Tom’s 1st pass Report was doubled and when we saw CONFIRMED after calling him, we recorded him Confirmed. Reviewing the log, we see Tom CONFIRMED the 3rd pass in MFSK-32. Stuff happens. Hats-Off to every Op that works these weekly Exercises. Emergency nets are unlikely to move at the speed we practice. They’ll be calm and capable when the situation is dire and speed is essential.

Our propagation expectations were derived from HamClock. It presents all the information we usually gather from multiple websites in a single colorful screen. We hope tonight is the beginning of much better band condx. We look forward to working with colleagues to our East.

It’s good to see Randy K7HUH on the log. Randy lives in Roseburg,OR. We know Randy thru the ARES District 5 HF net. We’ve no members here in Curry County and no regular EMCOMM training or practice. It’s a stark contrast to the Rainbows Canyon ARC in Cedar City,UT where they’re tightly integrated with Civic agencies. They train & practice regularly. RCARC has been with us for many years and were sometimes a third to half the Roster. They’re excellent EMCOMM training partners.

During the NBEMS Exercise one station was unable to decode OFDM Modes. OFDM was added to FLDIGI early last year after a testing period like THOR-32,44,56 are experiencing today. Updating software can be chancy; sometime it goes astray and you wish you’d waited. Waiting sometimes saves having to upload a fix. Not upgrading can leave you without new features. It’s a difficult decision. When we see a number of Alpha versions, we’re glad we didn’t update. If we fall too far behind, we’re without features that support net-operations. Developer Dave W1HKJ just released stable NBEMS suite versions. You can download them here: http://www.w1hkj.com/files/

Update FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP and try the new THOR Modes. Lamar AE6LJ already had the NBEMS Suite updated and Tom WA7JYK installed the updates mid-net. We won’t experiment with them on-net until most Ops have updated. When they do, we’ll run a Mode Shoot-Out between MFSK & THOR. Meantime, we’ll experiment off-net. Eastern digital Ops are currently exercising the new THOR Modes on 80 & 40m, night & day. So far, their results are positive and encouraging.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Radiogram form & Amateur Radio Q-Codes. Morse Code(CW), the original digital mode, uses Q-Codes extensively. Digital operations also use Q-Codes, but not as extensively as CW. Q-Codes are both interrogative and expository, depending on circumstances and use. Q-Codes save typing, time, & energy.

Here’s a useful HamClock feature: HamClock includes a server. With HamClock active on Raspberry Pi/Linux, you can also have HamClock on Windows and Mac PCs via URL, ‘192.186.1.xxx:8081/live.html’. See FAQ/#14 @ http://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/

Today @ nbems@groups.io:
Subject: [nbems] Release of fldigi-4.2.00, flamp-2.2.09, and flmsg-4.0.23

Dave W1HKJ just released stable versions of FLDIGI NBEMS suite that include new THOR Modes, 32,44,56. THOR,
like MFSK, is Forward Error Correcting and has performance characteristics similar to MFSK. We’ll wait a couple weeks while those inclined to install new versions update their stations. Then, we’ll run an MFSK/THOR Mode Shoot-Out. It should be interesting. East coast digital Ops have been experimenting on 80/40m for a few weeks now. They’re impressed with the new THOR Modes.

The NBEMS Exercise is next …

This NBEMS Exercise begins in OFDM750F (850?wpm,750hz,FEC).
We’ll fill with OFDM500F (480?wpm,500hz,FEC) & MFSK-32/22
(630/435hz,120/80wpm,FEC).  < K7KY/NCS   ORCA DIGITAL NET DE K7KY

Does John ks6m have comments tonight?   😄

Tonight, I am multitasking.  I am using zoom to connect with our ARC
meeting, and here!  I hope our secretary is making good notes!

Have had very good air quality.  The lull in the temps and some rain
has greatly aided our fire fighters and they are starting to rein in
all our wild fires.

Did you note that closer stations have difficulty with ODFM while the
more DX stations had better copy?  Interesting.

Doug’s gremlins have given up for some reason!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < WA7JYK – I’ve updated the fldigi suite as noted in Announcements. So far, so good.

I’ve acquired two 8Gb raspberrypi 4 boards (Canakit and PiShop). I’ve been delving into the mystery of the same os
on two different SSD cards acting completely differently with VNC. Could it be the two identical SSD cards are not
identical? Stay tuned.

One of these days I’m going to become proficient at switching to another mode during traffic transmission! Mindy,
Doug, and Jaye are my role models.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

Does anyone here know why FLAmp is such a CPU hog? Just having it open really eats up the usage. FLMsg by
comparison idles at 0%. Anyway, it causes my poor old laptop here to over heat and shut down mid net. I’ve now
removed it from Autostart. WTH is FLAmp doing when nothing pertaining to it is going on that causes it to require so
much processing power?

Delighted to have CONFIRMED with my very first transmission using THOR 56 tonight!! I am practicisng and having

Pretty good band tonight
copied all but one block on first pass
Still having lots of rain but no flooding at my QTH
Also some pretty heavy lightning and thunder
100% copy on almost all traffic

Fall is on our door steps!! That means a lot of work for those of us who grow food and live mostly off the land. I have
a few additional projects piling up and maybe running out of time.

Good crop of carrots, beans, peas, cucumbers, leeks, zucchini (dead plant came back w/vengeance), cabbage, kale,
Anaheim pepper so far. Potatoes and onions next.

Gearing up to help w/Cedar City 1/2 Marathon race this Saturday. Always fun to help out local events w/their comm
needs.

Sry I missed the call for relay, caught me stepping out of shack for a second or two or three!! BIG NO NO 🙁 I am
glad Ken KR7KR had my back.

:mg:1250 Doug gave me the night off from NCS duties after a long day. However, I do have energy for Comments
😄 Welcome back to John KD0NBH and Randy K7HUH.

Nice OFDM demo & exercise Doug.
Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
OFDM-750F: 2 stns
OFDM-500F: 2 stns
MFSK-32: 5 stns

QST = QST has no ? context. It’s an informative broadcast to all Amateurs.
QRU = Have u anything 4 me? – I have nothing 4 u.
QSY = Shall I change freq to XX.xxx? –  I’m changing freq to: XX.xxx.

Note, QRU refers to Traffic, formal and informal. It doesn’t relate to other aspects of net operations. When you Ck-In
QRU on a Traffic net, you’re joining the net and notifying NCS you hold no Traffic. As a QRU Ck-In, you’re not called in Traffic Round, but you may be asked to Relay and will be included in other net events like Comment Round. QRU is a Traffic net shorthand, it’s not an ORCA Ck-In option. We’re not a Traffic net.

Fortuntely, the behavior of the Smith River Complex fire seems to be less threatening. It’s burned 85.5K acres with
19% containment. Hopefully the WX will not stoke it and they’ll continue making positive progress. HWY 199 from
coast to valley is open again which is important to coastal communities.

Great to see all on the WF!

Tnx Doug.

I worked extensively with q-codes and n-codes (military specific) and we used the
old teletypes.   those q-codes were vital for our comms.  Using puncuation was one of
the tricky things, we avoided that during our fast kb2kb sessions.  If I called on a ship
for qth, my transmission was   vessle int qth.  The vessle would state qth is “lat/long”   the
int is interogotive<SP>   so we used them both as questions and answers.  Tonight’s ex
was asking about answers as I read it.   But I also think that is was great to expose our ops
to the vital usefulness of the q-codes and how well they still work in our modern era of
communications!   I will never tire of these sessions!

Okay, will TU for the fun net.  Very happy to see signals so good tonight.
