ORCA welcomes back longtime member, Ralph WB6SDR in Valencia, CA. Starting an hour earlier made better band condx for most members. We lost reliable copy with Jaye KE6SLS and Doug KA7FOO during the TRAFFIC round, but their signals improved during the COMMENT round. Some stations were copyable, but quite weak at ck-in and were logged in&out.  All of the stations we had difficulty copying were south/southwest of us. Next week, we’ll be another hour ahead of darkness due to DST. Hopefully this too, will have a positive effect on reception for us all.

The FLAMP exercise was a good demo of PSK250R (220wpm/330hz). I initially thought all stations would report CONFIRMED, but 2 stations of the 7 stations needed fills. Changing band condx give us an opportunity to try different modes and we’re learning which work reliably without slowing traffic to a snail’s pace. We also used a form we haven’t used before, ICS-309, a communications log. Good to familiarize ourselves with forms that are used by agencies in an emergency.

The images reflect the band at the start of the net:

RX: W1EEP UT
RX: KE6SLS CA

Once again, weekly check-ins are increasing. More active stations increase net-time. We need your help to keep the nets a reasonable length.  Practice with a 20 word file is about the same as a 2k word file.  To increase the number of complete traffic evolutions, we encourage brief files.  This doesn’t mean never sending a long file; it means being cognizant of net flow and tailoring your input to help manage net time.  Thinking strategically about the relationship between traffic and net-time increases our situational awareness.  Long files should be summarized and include a follow-up link for those interested.

We appreciate all stations who take the time to check-in, active or in&out. We like working with you to keep our saws sharp and improve our digital communication skills. We hope to see you again soon on the WF.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 05/March/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex108.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. We’re beginning to explore more of the FLMSG forms. If you
complete the optional exercise, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
tonight or any net.

Starting an hour earlier did improve communications last week. Condx may
improve further when we begin DST next weekend. Difficult condx make for a
longer net. Large rosters and poor band condx are a recipe for long slow
nets. We’re looking for ways to keep ORCA closer to an hour. Last week we
needed an hour fifty minutes to complete the net. That’s way too long for
a practice net. You can help us manage net time by keeping traffic brief
or holding your traffic for the next net when the roster is large. Images
don’t travel well when the band is poor; they arrive very blurry, especially
in color mode. Let’s use short text files while the band is uncooperative.

We want to highlight the participation of our long-term members. They don’t
need digital-traffic training; they’ve already made their bones. Yet, they
practice with us faithfully, week after week. Why? Because they value the
opportunity to sustain and polish their digital skills while contributing to
a dynamic learning environment. They are the essence of the net. It’s the
regular members, all of you, that create an effective learning experience for
new members. New members are immersed in a realistic simulation of traffic
and emergency nets; they’re learning from excellent examples of focus, attention
to detail, and digital netiquette. Thank you all.

Remember: 30 Meter Multi Mode Weekend
When: March 16th and 17th 2019
Where: 10 MHz – 30 Meter Band (10.100 – 10.150)
Objective: To promote experimenting and different digital modes on 30m
30m is an interesting band. No contesting, no phone, 200w maximum power.
30m is restricted to CW and digital modes. Details at the 30MDG website:

ORCA Net < WA7HHE, have sent out a net reminder for the new time suspecting many trying to get used to the time change, some out mowing their lawns? This station just finished shovelling snow at this QTH several days ago. Rain incoming tomorrow.

W7ZAP and the Net < KR7KR

Fairly good band conditions here tonight
Able to copy almost everyone
Test image good with a little noise
NCS signal was about +10 to +15
Band is fading a little as it gets later.
Re-arranging the Ham Shack/Office today so I’m not trying to run any remote control tonight.
Having some trouble with computer overheating — case fan died.
I ordered a new case with better cooling — should be able to have things put back together in a few days.

Thanks for the net.

W7ZAP, K7KY and the ORCA Net de KI7TPD

Band was kind of rough tonight. NCS was -7 to 15 at the start and really varied a lot… It has been wet here and it looks like more rain on the way over the next few days. We have had some flooding in some areas (fortunately not here) with road damage in Zion NP. I heard that they had 14 feet of snow up near Duck Creek so I guess we have some water for the summer!

Spring Break is next week! Hope to get a bit of radio time in!

73s everyone!
