Tonight’s theme was the bitter winter storms sweeping across most of the country. Stations experiencing power outages, 18″ of snow in a day, wind, sleet and icing conditions. We even had a dusting of snow and freezing temps on the southern Oregon coast here in Brookings. Brad WA7HHE had to use his generator to get on the air to monitor local emergency comms, as the local radio staion was off the air due to the storm and loss of power. A reminder to us all,  its always good to make sure your batteries are charged and your generator is in working condition. You never know when an emergengy will occur.

The weekly FLAMP exercise was a first for ORCA… no use of MFSK modes. Doug K7KY began in THOR100 (352wpm/1800hz) and filled in THOR50x1 (176wpm/900hz) & THOR22 (78wpm/524hz). We experienced difficult band conditions for close-by stations, but had very good path to stations further away. Low sunspot activity and quiet geomagnetic conditions are making 50-200 mile HF communications difficult.

As mentioned briefly in the announcements, last Friday we lost the contents of the ORCA website. I was removing an FTP account from our server and inadvertently deleted the website. :-( Major goof-up. The site is back, but missing net reports from the past 10 months and numerous content revisions written by Doug. Back-up, back-up, back-up! Removing an FTP account has dire consequences if you’re not paying attention to or failing to understand the pop up message. Many lessons learned.

Test images copied from tonight’s net:

RX: W1EEP UT
RX: KI7TPD UT
RX: K7DV ID

Every net I learn something new or am reminded of areas to focus on improving. One reoccurring area for me is to slow down. I don’t know what happens, but by the end of the net I feel like a rental horse headed for the barn! Each net presents different challenges for us all. Together we’re all gaining valuable digital communication traffic handling experience. We enjoy working with each of you and look forward to seeing you on the WF again soon!

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 05/February/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex104.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC File Manager
exercise. Complete the instructions and email the file to NCS.

Last week, Fred KI7TPD and Ken KR7KR demonstrated the off-net-frequency traffic
handling routine again. This routine is SOP for Emergency and Traffic nets. It
would be good to run this exercise on a regular basis. Give it a try yourself.

We had a major website crash over the weekend. Not one file remained. Stunning,
to say the least. Our web Host only backs up every 48-72 hours and made this
single back-up minutes after the site was deleted. The back-up contained one
empty directory. Our best working back-up was quite stale: May 2018, ten
months ago. Mindy did a heroic job of getting the May 2018 copy operational.
There’s much yet to do. All edits and addtitions to the site since May 2018
are gone and will have to be rebuilt from memory. Yuck! Still, it could have
been much worse. We just got it back up this morning. It will take some time
to restore lost content.

Cold WX has found it’s way to SW/OR. It snowed here yesterday. All soon gone,
but it’s still cold. We’re busy stoking the woodheater and keeping the water
pipes flowing.

Fired up the ham shack on emergency power to hear the Utah Highway Patrol extremely busy with auto-accidents. Local Radio Stations off the air due to the power outage. This was a crazy day! We had 6-8 inches of snow (plus more today) with lots of wind, the power went out for much of the day and traffic signals were out all over town.

We also had 15 rigs slide off the road and close I15 along with multiple finder benders throughout town… Many of the local schools were out for the day, but SUU stuck it out and remained open! Only had one late student who got stuck in the snow so in the end it all worked out!

Stay safe and warm! 73’s everyone!
