Another difficult evening on 80m.  Short skip was better than usual at the expense of long skip.  Propagation did improve somewhat as the evening progressed.  Tough band condx and summer time activities are reducing check-ins.  We finished in an hour six minutes tonight.  ORCA welcomes Jason W7JSN in Union,OR to the net.  We’re finally getting more Oregon Ops, a long term ORCA goal.

For the weekly FLAMP exercise, Mindy chose MFSK-128, 64,32; a perfect call for tonight’s band. Greg KG7DMI in Carson City,NV was the only station to CONFIRM MFSK-128.  Tom WB7TZD in Vancouver,WA CONFIRMED the 2nd pass in MFSK-64, but the more distant stations were still not decoding.  Doug KA7FOO relayed the message in MFSK-32, but still no joy for the distant stations.  They were finally CONFIRMED when Mindy sent the blocks in MFSK-32.  We learned by email that Jaye KE6SLS also CONFIRMED the exercise.  His station was monitoring ORCA while he attended the Humboldt ARC meeting. Howard KB6NN was also at that meeting with his station monitoring ORCA.  His 2nd signal evaluation image is near perfect, but he didn’t print any FLAMP activity.

Here’s an FLDIGI oddity:  Someone sent traffic in one of the narrow PSK modes, but the mode change is not reflected in the log.  I remember this transmission, but not the mode.  Neither of our logs recorded this mode change.

Band condx did prevent some Ops from participating tonight.  There were stations we could barely see on the wf, but not print.  A couple were relayed, thank you; others we missed.  Let’s hope we’re closing in on Solar Minimum.  Although these condx are good for training, it takes some of the pleasure out of practicing digital traffic-handling.  Thanks for hanging in with us in these condx. Nothing lasts forever.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 04/June/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex122.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the optional exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round using FLAMP.

Fortunately for us on the west coast, we’ve had no serious wx issues lately.
Not so in mid-America; Phil KJ6GQW is in Arkansas working flooding with the
Red Cross. He’s coordinating shelter facilities for flood victims. We’ve not
heard from Rick K0KEX in a couple weeks. He’s in Springfield,MO; they’ve had
numerous tornados lately. We hope he and his family are safe.

For the FLAMP exercise we announce the upcoming modes, send the message header
(block 0) twice, and send TxID at least twice. When band condx prevent you from
decoding RSID, you have the information and time you need to change mode manually.
The header block will come twice giving you time to set mode manually w/o missing
the header.

Get Ready: ARRL Field Day 2019, 22-23 June 2019.

ORCA < WA7HHE, Band starting out challenging, hoping for the usual improvement as darkness falls. We are all having fun here locally comparing s/n and blocks received. Is odd how some of block catchers miss some and others catch a different block. Part of the fun doing ORCA behind the scenes. Recently updated FLDIGI and my TxID is
staying off when I ask it to do so. Wish all a great evening from Southern Utah 73’s WA7HHE

I was able to copy NCS tonight! Mostly over -3 to +6. Conditions seem to get better with sunset. Fun and education al as always!!!

Just got back from Prescott Arizona and the Prescott Hamfest! Had a lot of fun and went to some very interesting Workshops and talks. Kinda tired now but glad to be home!

Looks like things are warming up! Time to get out and play on the radio!

WX finally turing nice, but cooling trend for the weekend. n Forecast of 90 tmw.

Was at Lake Lahotan for Memorial weekend. Was cool, windy, raining. But there were only about 1/10 of the normal
holiday campers! Major cut back for the state park income and the local community ecomonics!

CERT Exercise last Saturday was a success for the ARES ATV team. Video from drone to ECOMM1 Van, to REOC.

Sorry for the delay on the FlAmp relay.
Will blame mouse clickie not workie!

The training in Fallon is the EmComm Level I Certification Course with the new ARRL EC-001 book. Been a long time
planning this class / course. ‘Tis a good thing!

See you Digi-Hams next week.
