We had an unusual start to the net tonight. 1st Tuesday NBEMS Exercises are the domain of guest NCS. Bruno KG7VVN & Don KJ7VGV alternate conducting Exercises every 1st Tuesday. During Early Ck-In, we had intermittent copy w/Bruno. Mindy emailed with him, but email was sketchy too. We’ve been having issues with our email server. When net time approached we decided to relieve Bruno and conduct the Exercise ourselves. We didn’t want Bruno to be stuck with an undoable task. Later we learned he and Don had discussed band condx and Don was prepared to Relay. The NBEMS Exercise would have come off well; relays during the Exercise are good practice. On the other hand, changing up quickly was good practice for us and it worked out well. Comment Round Reception Reports indicate Don may have needed Relays to  coastal California stations.

Thanks for working the net while enjoying the 4th of July Holiday. Although the Roster is small, we had six Active stations work the NBEMS Exercise. 5 of 6 answered the question correctly, 83%. Maybe my Exercise instructions need more work. Anyway, Exercise questions simulate message text; they are occasionally germane to digital operations. They’re main training value is parsing written instructions correctly. If we don’t parse instructions correctly, we’re unable to implement them. Instructions need to be comprehensive, clear, and concise. You too may some day be writing instructions while processing digital traffic.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Sherwin KD6SPN in San Jose,CA. We’ll ask him to review the Quick-Start Guide @ our website: http://orcadigitalnet.com. He’s not far from John KS6M in Oakland,CA and may experience similar path to NCS as John. We sometimes have a pipeline to John and other times struggle to copy. Hopefully, overall band condx will begin to improve for everyone as nights grow longer. We’ve not logged our friends in MO for weeks now. We’re not connecting East of Utah & New Mexico these days.

Happy 4th of July!! Thanks for taking time to work with us on this holiday.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG ICS-213 form. Bruno KG7VVN would have conducted the Exercise from Beryl,UT tonight, but band condx currently have him sidelined. Doug K7KY will conduct the Exercise. Bruno and Don KJ7VGV alternate conducting 1st Tuesday NBEMS Exercises. You’re welcome to participate too. It’s an excellent 1st step to the Net Control Station role. Conducting these Exercises will increase your digital networking skills and confidence even if you don’t aspire to conduct nets. In emergencies, your additional skills and experience will have you relaxed and confident.

What’s to say about current band condx? Beside being low in the solar cycle, nature throws up a flurry of CMEs. Although practicing in these condx is difficult, we’ll be more capable Operators for the effort. Last session, we switched NCS back & forth throughout the net. Whoever copied a station replied. Frequently, only one of us copied anything. Our years of dual-NCS practice really paid off. A single NCS w/one antenna would have had a frustrating evening. The other mitigating factor was net-member focus and attention throughout the net. Together, we completed all net events in reasonable time. For once, no one logged into the after-net Monitor’s Session. We were all tired.

A few weeks ago, we discovered the 210′ doublet balun was faulty. Next we discovered the 135′ doublet has a 6:1 balun where we thought it was 4:1. Fitting a 1:1 balun has 3.581 SWR @ 1.1:1. We’ve ordered new baluns from Balun Designs. A #4116 – 4:1 Hybrid Balun 1.5 – 54MHz 3kW, for the 600ohm ladderline fed 210′ doublet @ 80′, and a #1151 – 1:1 ATU Current Balun, 1 – 54 MHz, 2kW, for the 300′ ladderline fed 135′ doublet @ 135′. We hope to improve both antennas; we’ll let you know how it goes. qhlh+Ëgx 6

Tnx for running the exercise Doug. A bit of stress
sorting out who would run the exercise. Sorry to Bruno
for the confusion. I’m wondering if Doug & I are still
having email issues. Glad to see Bruno is copying NCS.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-250R: 3 stns
THOR-50×1: 3 stns
MFSK-32: 1 stn

Happy 4th of July everyone!

I ordered a 30Ah LifePO4 battery, can’t wait for it to get in, going to use it as emergency power source until I get a bigger battery, as well as a portable for stuff like POTA/SOTA. I also made a few coax dipoles to use as portable antennas, specifically 6, 10, and 20m.

73s, see you all next net!

Tonight is suppose to be a good night to see the Milkeyway(sp?). At the cabin can see it most nights anyway
but will take a look and see if there is any difference. Bruno sorry about the tough band conditions I was
ready with our plan/relay. Today is our 247 years birthday, will we make it to 250? Happy 4th to Doug and Mindy
and all the other Ops.

It’s another 4th of July and the explosions have been going randomly
all day. So far, cats are handling it well. Keep a share eye out
for fires!

Thoroughly enjoyed the “Buck Moon” experience last night. Truly was
magnificent. The romantic in me had that “I could nearly reach out
and touch it” feeling. We were lucky to have clear skies for a
change.

At chk-in time, NCS is VERY LIGHT cpy in Utah as I use the Utah SDR
to monitor tonight. Bruno kg7vvn however has outstanding signal into
Utah. Now able to cpy him here. Don kj7vgv also has great signal to
Utah.

By happenstance, I got to meet up with Matt and another ham Tim
yesterday after a dental apt. :)

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < K7KY Thanks for working the net on a Holiday. Practice make Perfect! I’m always impressed with how well everyone works the NBEMS Exercises. You guys make it look easy. It’s not all that easy. When stuff goes astray in digital operations, it can be hard to diagnose and fix quickly. It take a lot of experience and practice to run digital operations as smoothly as our net usually run. I think my instruction-writing is also a little better. If we are ever called to duty, this is the team I want to work with.

Switching NCS for the NBEMS Exercise tonight came together easily. It was good practice for adapting to band condx. It’s easy for Mindy & I to switch quickly, but takes a little more coordination when were seperated by miles.

I’m getting used to my new Cherry keyboard, but still having a lot of mis-types. Time for another Typing-Tutor.

Nice to hv April W7ANC aboard. Mindy has been the only YL for years. Since the outset, actually. YLs ck-in now & then, but none have stayed. We may qualify for some sort of award for improving member balance (-: BTN < K7KY
