Daylight Saving Time is always a set-back for ORCA Ops, especially those furthest East.  Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO just squeaked in by VidID as we were closing the Monitor’s Session. Check the WX image for his QTH below. VidID, similar to TxID, can decode at greater distance than text. His VidID was very faint, but sill readable. Text wasn’t decoding. Our path to John KS6M in Oakland,CA was interesting tonight too.  Propagation between our stations was extremely directional. His 1st ORCAtest image was pixel perfect, but it took both of our stations to identify who was trying to Ck-In. Mindy copied nothing; I picked 6M out of the noise and guessed. His closing image had only a pixel or two astray.  One way paths have been more frequent this winter.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mark WA7RJ in Tulalip,WA.  We were also pleased to have Dan W7WVF Ck-In from Bandon,OR. Dan is one of our colleagues in Coos County, our Northern neighbor.  We see him every Sunday on the ARES Dist-5 net. In our early days, we were the only Oregon Ops in our Oregon/California net. We’re still the only ORCA Ops in Brookings and Curry County.

NBEMS Exercise question & answer: <GOHOME> depends on your ‘Sweet Spot’ setting.  A similar Tag lets you ascribe any frequency: <FREQ:xxxx>.

Try this Macro. It sets and LOCKS the cursor @ 1500wf instantly (assuming 1500 is your Sweet Spot:
<LOCK:off><GOHOME><@LOCK:on>.   Name= GOHOME

Next month, we’ll practice passing traffic off the net frequency. This simple protocol is used by emergency and traffic nets to process traffic efficiently while continuing w/net operations. Most of the messages on emergency and traffic nets  aren’t addressed to the net, but to other stations or agencies.  Our task is to connect those holding traffic with the best station to complete delivery. When there’s a number of messages to pass, we ask senders/receivers to pass traffic off net frequency.  This enables us to continue with net operations while traffic passes on other frequencies.

Next month, we’ll ask two volunteers to demonstrate this process to the net. It’s an easy exercise to learn and execute.  It’s exactly what we’ll be doing when passing traffic on net freq is inefficient.  If you would like to participate, let us know: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.  This exercise is for Active stations; it will occur mid-net, during the Traffic portion of the NBEMS Exercise. We’ll  outline off-freq traffic-handling more specifically before the exercise.

Did you work the SATERN Digital Net? Saturday AM, 1000p. The Salvation Army’s digital training net was called by Ken KD5XJ in Houma, Louisiana by remote connection to a SATERN station in Texas. From Texas, the net easily covered USA on 20m. It was a popular and well supported net. We had three mid-USA Ops for Relay. Steve W7WSV was a SATERN Relay. On occasion, ORCA DIGITAL NET cooperated with SATERN for exercises. SATERN closed without notice in 2019 when an ongoing disagreement between Amateurs and SATERN came to a head. After 9yrs of service, it was a major loss for the Amateur digital community. We tried to sustain it, but without access to the powerful Texas SATERN station, it wasn’t possible.

SATERN often logged 50 Ck-ins. Some on-air, some by internet. Early Ck-In ran an hour b4 net. Nets consisted of a single SATERN Bulletin in FLAMP. NCS would fill Ops needing 5 blocks or less. After net, the Relay stations would resend the Bulletin and fill all stations needing any number of blocks. Coverage was coast 2 coast. The success of SATERN suggests that a similar Saturday net today would be well supported.  The need for digital training is even greater today. If you have a solid signal and 20m rotatable beam, you might consider running a Saturday 20m digital training net. ORCA NBEMS Exercises are available with whatever other support we could provide.

OOppps!! I need to send Announcements!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise for this evening again features the FLMSG Radiogram form. Bruno KG7VVN, one of our alternate-N
CS, will conduct the Exercise.

You too can conduct ORCA NBEMS Exercises. It’s no harder than learning the digital skills you rely on every Tuesday evening; it’s an
easy extension of your present skills. Bruno and Don KJ7VGV helped us refine the instruction set. You’ll have access to four experienced
Ops who’ll help you come up to speed quickly. Conducting these Exercises is a major step toward NCS skills. We’re approaching a
Summer like no other. We may need experienced digital NCS Ops. It’s better to learn these skills today without the pressure of actual
emergencies.

Preparing for emergencies, we usually think about fires, floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, but we don’t usually think of
long-term loss of grid power and communications. That would be a game-changer for everyone. We should be thinking of how our
digital networking skills can contribute to long-term emergency communications nationwide.

We also need to consider the redundancy and stability of our radio stations. Station security is a subset of Home and Family security. If
power and/or communications fail long-term, law enforcement and law & order will diminish. Food, shelter, and security will be
primary. Best we prepare today with this possibility in mind.

Amateur digital operations are developing rapidly across the Country. There are HF digital nets east, west, and central USA. There are
many more local VHF/UHF digital nets. While we could develop a National network quickly if needed, we would initially use existing
networks. That means connecting Western Digital Net to the old NTS system, now called Radio Relay International. We’ve contacted RRI
managers; we’re welcome to connect when we’re ready.

Meantime, we can begin preparing to handle actual traffic. WDN/NCS may be quite busy with heavy Radiogram traffic. They’ll need
experience passing traffic off the net frequency when traffic is heavy. They’ll also need to track who has traffic to pass, who is off-freq
sending/receiving traffic, and who has traffic that can’t be passed directly, but needs to be held until a receiver is available.

We should begin learning/practicing off-net-freq traffic handling. We used to practice this here on ORCA. We’d like to dedicate a session
every month to off-net-freq traffic handling practice. This is a simple protocol, common to all traffic nets. Passing all traffic on net-freq
would be ponderously slow and inefficient. This exercise has two benefits. Those involved gain hands-on experience. The net learns by
observation. We need two volunteers to pass & receive a message off-net-freq. It’s similar to what we do every week. Returning to
net-freq is done efficiently by macro, providing an opportunity to expand our traffic-handling skills and Macro knowledge in one
exercise. We need two volunteers to begin. It’s a hands-on opportunity for newer Active Ops to participate in an easy exercise.

The other skill WDN/NCS will need is logging Ops holding traffic, Ops off-freq passing or receiving traffic, and traffic awaiting a receiver.
To date, we’ve not addressed this NCS task. It’s a good bit more logging than we currently do @ ORCA or WDN. This brings FLNET to
mind. Don KJ7VGV has delved deep into FLNET, worked with Dave W1HKJ to add features, and configured FLNET to NCS Western
Digital Net. He recently developed instructions for learning and applying FLNET. If you’re inclined, contact Don and take a close look at
FLNET. It may be the traffic management app Western Digital Net will need this Summer.

Thanks for emailing beginning/ending ORCAtest images. Some sessions, we’ll ask a member send ORCAtest w/Path Evaluation Macro
prior to Comments. For those sessions, send only that single image, not the beginning/ending images. TU. We don’t have time to
publish them all.

If you’re relatively new to ORCA, please let us know if you’ve downloaded and installed the Ck-In Relay Macro. Every session we ask
someone to relay Ck-In w/this Macro. We don’t always know if newer Ops have the Macro installed and working. To Relay Ck-In, we
choose Active stations with solid signals that have our Relay Macro installed.d
Sri for the mis-step ther Bruno! Bet I surprised you. Tnx to Doug K7KY for keeping me on track!

Nice work Bruno. Tough condx for PSK-250R tonite (I copied 2 blks). I noticed ur signal was S8+ during PSK TX
and S9+ during THOR & MFSK TXs. We’ve found that we have to increase our PWR when we TX certain modes (PSK,
OFDM come to mind). What a difference with THOR-50×1.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-250R: 0 stns
THOR-50×1: 5 stns
MFSK-32: 2 stns

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mark WA7RJ in Tulalip,WA. We’ll ask Mark to review our website Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet
.com. It’s good to see one of our Oregon digital colleagues again, Dan W7WVF in Bandon,OR.

Thanks to Bruno KG7VVN for conducting the NBEMS Exercise this evening. He and Don KJ7VGV have been conducting NBEMS Exercise
for a few months now. We hope a few others will join them. It’s an excellent introduction to NCS duties.

When band condx are unfavorable, it’s good to send TxID twice. This is easily done by Macro with the Tag.

The Tag depends on your Config setting, ‘Sweet Spot’. I have another Macro using : This Macro positions & LOCKS the Cursor to
1500wf instantly. Very handy.

DST has reduced our Rosters a bit. Our colleagues in KS/MO are having more difficulty with the earlier net time. BTN < Doug K7KY

Oops! I forgot the rule: we can’t include Macro Tags in files sent by Macro. My comments regarding Macros didn’t make sense as the
Tags were missing… I use <GOHOME> to move the cursor and lock it quickly with a mouse click. This Macro looks like this:
