Wow! Tonight’s net kept me hopping. Early ck-in was brisk and I was a second or two behind from the beginning. Good thing Mindy W7ZAP is nearby to help me stay in the game. My ck-in routine may need revision. Ken AD5XJ, NCS for SATERN Int’l Digital Net, has suggested a net-logging program to me and I’ll check it out when we get our house resettled.

I always begin ck-in with last weeks roster as many of you return each week. I can quickly shift the entries with cut/paste. Ck-ins not on the old roster I copy/paste from a large database of stations that have ck-ed in over the past two years. First time ck-ins I enter by kbd on-the-fly. It’s a lot do quickly and I’m sometimes at my edge of attention. And, my typing is still not easy and accurate. I’m teaching my rt index finger to do the work of the stiff and shortened middle finger.

Let’s review image transmission in FLAMP. FLAMP can send many types of files including images and music, but music and image transmission is extremely slow. Large images are unsuitable for digital traffic practice. Whatever type file you intend to send, it’s good practice to check the size and TX time before TXing to the net. Our main purpose here is practicing traffic handling. While the actual message is secondary, we all enjoy interesting traffic while we practice. Small B/W images take the least time. Color images need to be small as they take more than twice the time of B/W images.

You can always preview practice traffic by leaving the radio off. And, the large unnamed box at the middle right of the TX tab will tell you the size and TX time of your file. You should also consider ‘Block Size’. When blocks are small and numerous, it increases overall TX time as every block contains a header. The manual has good guidelines for these adjustment. That said, don’t worry about mistakes. Mistakes are part of the learning process.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 03 October 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex40.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the BLANK form. Complete the exercise

instructions and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC using FLAMP,

or send your own practice traffic, or QRU.

Thanks to Brad WA7HHE for copying the WINMOR station ID. I called

Bill AB7AA in AZ this week regarding the WINMOR signal on 3.581+1500.

He’s been on this freq for 12yrs, although it’s only used for EMCOMM

traffic occasionally. We’ve only noticed it in the past few months

and only during early ck-in and the first few minutes of net. He’s

not noticed our traffic.

Our appreciation to Bill AB7AA for being pleasant to work with. He’ll be

listening tonight.

Remember: You can check-in, or break in during net, by printing your

callsign on the waterfall with VideoID. In MFSK-32, I can read a station

printing text @ 1500 and copy callsign VideoIDs printed at either side

of that contact. Your callsign is all I need @ ck-in unless you’re only

monitoring. Then, add ‘in&out’ to your call. When you ck-in, I assume

you have practice traffic. If not, just send QRU during Traffic round.

This makes ck-in simple.

Instructions for printing your callsign on the waterfall with ViedeoID

are on the website. See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/resources/macros/.

Your callsign in VideoID is easier to read when it’s printed large and

horizontal on either side of 1500.

so I guess you’ll have to read my replies in the little FLAmp window.

Speaking of WINMOR, I’m testing a new alternative called VARA and it’s 5-8X faster! Actually

Tried 3 versions of MFSK (64/32/16) for the FLAMP exercise, but no luck TXing fill for W1EEP. Whoa! That was the largest FLAMP file I’ve ever seen! A good reminder for checking the box that says how long the TX time is (5th row far right box [size/time] on the TX tab). Look forward to hearing more about VARA.

Great to see all on the WF tonight!
