Tonight’s net was unusual, interesting, and fun. At least for most of the net. There were a some rough spots near the end, though. Members of the Humboldt ARC checked in from their monthly meeting with 100w into a vertical antenna. A first for ORCA. Good thing they didn’t all want to be logged in. It might have melted my keyboard. On the down side, I didn’t look for late check-ins during the net and a number of Ops were unable to get aboard. I hope they will accept my apology. I’m revising the net outline to remind myself to look for check-ins at regular intervals. The net is open to check-in throughout the session. You can print your callsign near net-frequency anytime I’m not sending. Mindy & I both watch for wfID’s. I can be busy and miss them; send again if I don’t respond after the current exchange.

Steve K6WSJ was one of the left-out stations. He had been monitoring for some time and had prepared a detailed reception report. Unfortunately for the net, he was unable to get it in the log. I copied it after the net closed. I feel bad when I miss check-ins like this. Digital NCS can be challenging and I do try to review and revise my game, but sometimes I’m at my limit of attention. Mindy is a big help to keeping me current and frequently catches something I’m missing. When my mind is full it’s hard to take in another task w/o losing the threads I’m processing.

We’re all here to learn and practice digital traffic handling. I’m also working on the digital NCS routine.  I appreciate your patience and welcome your observations and suggestions. Most of our protocols have derived from member suggestions, and trial and error. Unfortunately tonight, two new stations were among the late check-ins; Gary WA6HZT in Dillon Beach,CA and Eric KK6RKY Trinity in Center,CA. My apology for a frustrating beginning.

We’re doing well with FLAMP traffic. We don’t attempt to fill 100% for every station. Some stations experience worse band condx than others. Stations close to the source may easily copy 100% while others need numerous fill blocks. One round of fills gives us REPORT experience, but may not complete the message for everyone. The opportunity for each station to send and receive traffic is more important than message content during practice. Stations wanting further fills can complete messages after the net. Tonight, even that was difficult with four or more stations working @ 2212wf.  Sorry for the QRM, WA7HHE and K7GJBB.

Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight. I hope to see you next week too. 73 Doug K7KY/NCS
