Although tonight’s net ran smoothly, it wasn’t so easy to run. I occasionally had difficulty seeing the screen clearly. My vision went blurry a few times. I knew this day would come, but knowing didn’t make it any easier. We always knew our tenure was limited, but we didn’t want to stop while the net was well supported and effective. In our vision, a training net should be a consistent model of efficient networking routines. This was instilled in me by 4yrs on High Endurance Coast Guard cutters & more time as a Fireman. There was never idle chit-chat on shipboard nets; it was only business, brief & concise.

In 2013 we were 3 OR/Ops & 4 CA/Ops on 2m. Soon after we left ORCA EMERGENCY NET to work HF we realized we knew little about digital emergency operations. There were no west coast digital nets on HF. Initially, we operated as we did on 2m, 75m Phone & 80m Data. Switching back’n forth between Phone & Data was really inefficient, but working only 80m Data was plagued by doubles. We soon developed Pre-Tone. This simple routine, sending a brief tone by Tune button, significantly reduced doubles. Pre-Toning was a milestone that enabled us to stay in Data mode on 80m . Now we realized we needed a training net before we could operate an emergency net. We became ORCA DIGITAL NET.

Many of you have been with us for years. ORCA has been a team from the outset. We’ve developed the net together; most of what we know and do came from working together. We wanted to create a training net that we would like to join. We like to work smart; that requires thinking. Look around, everyone here likes to think (-: It’s great company. We practice regularly to polish and sustain our skills. We get on very well. We’ve become good friends.

It’s a relief to have an end date. We hope to continue until then, but we could stop sooner if we must. ORCA’s future is open. There are numerous options. ORCA as it’s currently configured takes a lot of time. Preparing Exercises, traffic-handling or Macro takes time. We’re more efficient today, but it still takes 10-12hr/wk to support ORCA.

Some of you worked the SATERN Digital Emergency Net, run from Louisiana by Ken AD5XJ. It predated ORCA by a few months, but closed suddenly about 4yrs ago. The format was simple and efficient.  Saturday AM, 1200EST, 14.065. SATERN covered the country. Early Ck-In began 1hr b4 net. NCS sent a bulletin in FLAMP and filled <5 blocks. Many stations needed more than 5 blocks. After closing, 2 or 3 Relay stations filled stations across the country. It worked very well and gave lots of traffic-handling & Relay experience. Steve W7WSV, a long-time ORCA Op, was a SATERN Relay station. Filling after-net by multiple Relay stations kept the net short. Ken didn’t do Net Reports. With a few changes, our NBEMS Exercise format would fit the SATERN model on our current Date/Time/Freq. Food 4 thought.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

It’s another 1st Tuesday. Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise will be conducted by Don KJ7VGV from his cabin, North of Reno,NV. Don & Bruno KG7VVN alternate conducting 1st Tuesday Exercises. Hats-Off to Don & Bruno for taking ORCA participation to NCS level.

ORCA DIGITAL NET is nearing 11 years of service. We initially thought it would last about 7yrs. Today, health, homestead, and family responsibilities require more of our time & energy. Our personal resources are diminishing; we need to revise our commitments. We’ve decided to close ORCA DIGITAL NET at year’s end, or sooner if we must.

We really enjoy working with you and closing isn’t in our hearts, but it’s time to think strategically and do what’s best for health, home, and family. We deeply appreciate your participation and support. We would not have succeeded without you. You’re the best group of Amateurs we’ve ever worked with; we’ll never forget you. Your participation and support has inspired and energized us. Thank you so much.

Anyone have any idea how to stop fldigi from turning TxID back on when you turn it off?  It doesn’t do it all the time but sometimes it does, like tonight, I see its on with the green box, I click it off, then 1/4th of a second later it turns itself back on again (goes green).  I have no idea why it does this sometimes. It’s like one of those little gag toys with a switch, that when you switch it on, an arm comes out and flips itself back off 😄.

Also halfway through traffic I noticed I was only transmitting about 5 watts!  for some reason the tx attenuater setting keeps going back to -12 in fldigi, when I use -3 normally!  OOF, seems I was heard well though even at such low power!

I designed a 2.4GHz yagi (7 element) for my weather station project and 3D printed the boom today, as well as cut the elements, look forward to getting it put together soon and characterized.  In a way I really love making higher frequency antennas, you have to be more precise but everything is so small that you can do it on your desk without taking up the entire desk, or an entire bed, or an entire yard lol.

Talked to Lamar AE6LJ on 2M nat simplex today for a brief moment while he was driving by, I only just started recently
monitoring it, so that was fun 😄.

73 see everyone on the next net!

w7zap,

I’m sorry to learn about shuttering ORCA. 🙁  Working with you and
Mindy each week has long been some of the most enjoyable hamming I do
all week.

ISS had scheduled an SSTV event for 3oct-5oct.  Been on freq and
ready to copy, however, last three passes and nothing heard.  I can
only guess the ISS ran into technical difficulties.

Sunset 19:10PT  oh that winter is on its way!

Attempted to copy the AMRON report via 20m digital.  I set the radio
on freq and departed to fetch my car from shop.  Got back and found
NCS decided to move freq 900hz so I didn’t have any copy. :|

Today was SUPPOSED TO BE one of the warmest days this fall, HOWEVER,
the marine layer had differing views 😄

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < WA7JYK – For the Raspberry Pi fans on the net the Pi 5 release was announced last week. Quite an update from the rpi4 in speed and features. I pre-ordered one from PiShop.us. This included the rpi5, a cooling fan, a beefed up power supply, and a case. Don’t know when the order will arrive but I’m eagerly awaiting.

Matt N6FPV: When it happens on my Linux setup I close fldigi and then reopen. This also solves some other problems I have encountered.

Thanks to Don KJ7VGV for running tonight’s exercise.

Thanks again to Mindy and Doug for this training opportunity and, most importantly, for their years of service to this community . I REALLY appreciate it and I will REALLY miss the net when it closes.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

All good things must come to an end – dems da rules. Nice run and the most fun net yet for me ever yet, so far. Wish I had gotten in earlier is all.

Jaye, the radio on the US side of the ISS is “Misconfigured” with no ETA on it being Re-configured, last I checked. Not sure if that is the problem with SSTV, however. Usually from the Ruskie side, those, I think.

Smooth exercise Don. Thank you!

Almost panic mode to get the projects done before the time is up! Probably will end up wood harvesting in the snow.

Leaves have been changing color in the mountains and we had a dusting of snow the last storm. Beautiful time of the year.

I am sad to hear that you have decided to step away from ORCA but I am fully behind your decision. You two have established a world class digital communication training net and your legacies are cemented. We are all extremely appreciative for your dedication and outstanding leadership for the past 10 years and I only hope that we could keep your baby alive in some form!

The cabin got 0.3 inches of a good soaking rain couple days ago. Cooler weather for the
past couple of days but will climp back up to 80 degrees by the weekend. Still having
issues with RSID not changing modem when received.Tried a complete rebuild of Fldigi
but now it changed the com to com1 on windows 11 while Flrig is com3 which is correct.
However was able to rebuild using deleted fldigi.files. Bad news is I still have to n2anually change modem on RX. Back to the drawing board.

I was taken back when I heard of the change in ORCA but had a good discussion with

ORCA has been hand’s down, Doug’s & my favorite Amateur Radio experience. We’ve learned the most about our hobby, and we’ve met & made lifelong friends here. ORCA began with a few Ops in Brookings, a few just across the CA border in Crescent City, and a few more 100 miles south in Eureka CA. The ORCA DIGITAL NET became so much more than we ever anticipated, we owe that to all of you. Thanks so much for your interest & participation. This has been the best digital training net I have ever seen, and I have certair‹ benefited from the time I have spent with you and the other ops on this net.  \
Thank you for this great opportunity.  Wishing you both well.  73 for now.   <W7WSV

bpetmaya¸RR Steve thank you so much!   You and I tried our best to sustain the old
SATERN net and I enjoyed working w/you there and here on ORCA. Also, you’ve sent quite a bit if useful info over the years which reminds me of how much we’ve both learned from our ORCA friends.  It’s been the best Amateur experience of my
34yrs of Amateur radio.  And, it’s not over yet.  I hope ORCA may continue in a HYBRID form, to quote my friend Jaye (;{
tnx agn Steve     < K7KY

COMMENT

Good evening all, band conditions seem a bit off tonight, some I hear well, some I do not that I usually do.  The garden Is officially done with a couple of below freezing nights.  Now the chore of clearing everything out for the winter.  I have a new mode set up, I have Vara Chat set up with Vara FM to work local traffic.  I am able to work a station 16 miles away not line of sight so I figure that I have decent coverage around Central Oregon from my QTH in Prineville down in a hole. I missed that the Net is closing down, I will have to scroll back up and catch up.  73 to all.

well if there is one thing that is consistant, its change. Speaking og practice the group in Idaho has a couple new members that are attending our morning zoom meetings, one in Idaho and one in BC Canada, formaly from Idaho.  anyway they are new to digital ham radio and I gave them the list of nets I was aware of which included this net of course so perhaps they will check in some time
