Although band condx have been improving slowly, we’re not yet out of the woods. Tonight’s condx were mixed. Keith WA0TJT and Rick K0KEX checked in from Missouri with solid signals, while stations close to NCS had difficulty.  We copied Dave K7DV in Idaho well, but he couldn’t reliably copy us. We didn’t copy Washington stations well either.

National Election night had an interesting effect on attendance. We expected a smaller Roster tonight, but no. 25 ck-ins is about average, but the ratio between active and monitoring stations set a record. Only five active stations in 25 ck-ins. 80% of the Roster were QNX, probably keeping an eye on voting results. We wrapped the net in 56min. We intended to experiment with the new MFSK-64WIDE mode after net tonight, but there was no interest. It was not the night for extended participation.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first-time ck-in Paul W7PFB in Carnation,WA. We’ll ask him to review the Quick-Start Guide and monitor a few sessions before checking in to participate.

Steve K6ETA made an important announcement for all ORCA/WDN Ops:

‘NCS < K6ETA Thursday will be the last WDN I can NCS on my current antennas since I am putting my house up for sale….’

Steve may not be able to continue calling WDN if he can’t find a strong remote station to use for WDN. We may be approaching a WDN crossroad.  Steve has invested a lot of time and energy in establishing WDN and we too have invested with him. We should not let our efforts go to naught.  No one Op needs to run WDN alone; two, three, or four Ops can easily share this responsibility, reducing everyone’s time/energy commitment. There are numerous ORCA/WDN Ops well qualified to run WDN.  It will require a little learning and practice, but it’s well within their capabilities. We (Doug & Mindy) are currently doing all the radio work we can while sustaining our homestead responsibilities. Doug isn’t growing younger and we too have local radio commitments. We will do all we can to support a WDN NCS team.  Three or four Ops could make running WDN a rewarding team effort.  ORCA had developed into a remarkably dependable team.  We can certainly field another small team to sustain WDN until Steve relocates. Steve has done an outstanding job designing and developing WDN. Let’s get together and sustain WDN’s momentum.

Consider making a ‘Conditional’ commitment. Volunteer to join a team of >3 Ops.  If there’s not three or more volunteers, you’re not committed to running WDN alone.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex194.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Dave W1HKJ just released an Alpha version of FLDIGI, 4.1.15.05. It includes the new
@LOCK:xx|xxx|x TAG and two new WIDE versions of MFSK-32 & 64. If you’ve installed
Alpha 4.1.15.05, we’ll compare MFSK-64 w/MFSK-64WIDE after net tonight.

A note for newer ORCA Ops. Remember, we’re a Training net. Your participation is part
of the working example incoming Ops observe and emulate. ORCA endeavors to present
a correct example of digital net protocols. Ck-In is routine for long-time ORCA Ops, but
it may be a ‘teaching moment’ for newer Ops. The weekly Preamble and website Quick-
Start Guide define our Ck-In protocol and all net events. Digital nets vary widely; a
single Ck-In Macro isn’t right for every digital net. Use ORCA protocols @ ORCA. TU

Development of a limited ORCA Classified section is progressing slowly. Fall is a
busy time for us. Computer stuff waits for rainy WX.

Thanks for emailing the original Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA < WA7HHE, suspect many have an ear to the news this evening. Busy day with grocery store run and hour workout at the gym. Cut an antenna guy collar from a piece

of plastic, great indoor project as we are receiving some rain. Wish everyone a non-stressful evening. Brad

RR Brad so far, the evening is non-stressful… we’ll see how it ends (-: BK Next 4 Comments is Tom WB7EUX < NCS

NCS < WB7EUX – Spent the day assembling (believe it or not) Christmas decorations. We have a large ground and fence display that takes quite some work and time to put

together.

Removed a lot of leaves from our parking lot today with help from a leaf blower and rake.

We’re also preparing for our first significant winter storm expected to arrive Friday. Cold temps and snow.

Thanks for the net and 73! de WB7EUX

Second week here in Gallup NM, have had good wx most of this week, highs in the 60s, but it is supposed to end on Thursday with the next storm. The hospital has put

me on the swing shift, 10 and 1/2 hours per day, ending at 6PM Mountain Time on Tuesday and Thursday. I have Wednesday off, so can make ORCA (barely) in time to drive

to my spot and put up the 134 ft doublet and get my equipment in order. Don’t know if I will be able to make WDN, because I would have to stay up late with no day off

on Friday, and needing to start work at 7 AM. The hospital is almost maxed out with bothregular and COVID patients — only 5 beds left and we are short of gowns,

saanitizing wipes, and masks. We are sterilizing our masks by UV, but need to not leave in too long or they heat up and deteriorate. I am being exposed to COVID

positive patients on almost a daily basis, but, so far feel fine.Love ORCA! Best wishes to all. KB7VX/p Gallup NM at 6150 feet.

Enjoyed working Mindy w7zap on 146.52 FM this week! She had a great signal down here. This station always monitors “52” when not actively working VHF.

Have had much more marine layer of late (FOG) but still getting good sun for the panels. So far, haven’t put a dent in the new LIPO4 battery!

Rough copy on NCS, bands are going to be quite difficult for some time I fear. I wouldn’t even be able to copy NCS if I didn’t get the new antenna system installed.

Great to hear you NCS! Utah stations are booming in tonight.

Will be so very happy to have the elections behind us. Whew . .. !

Stay well, be safe and 73

opk guys i copy fairly well most of the time and the band is holding for the momennt Ive been quite busy here helping get more guys trained to be on the HF nets of

upyours and ours so Im not trying to be distant just having a ton on trouble copying sometimes and it is at this end I out to get a elevated antennat and whatever

needed to get out better your doing a great and I agree about the elections no matter who wins the good lord is in control of this world and truth will prevail
dispite politics so no need to worry 73 and hope to see and hear you guys again de K7dv

NCS < K6ETA Thursday will be the last WDN I can NCS on my current antennas since I am putting my house up for sale. The most obvious antennas need to come down and my

stealth antennas are not exactly high performers on 80M.

I do have some remote options and can also head over to a friend’s shack, but who knows whether I can be heard by everyone? Time will tell. In the meanwhile, anyone

who wants to stand in as NCS should look at the WDN website where there are macros and NCS tools as well as a net script.

If I fade out or can’t be heard on Thursdays, I hope someone stands in!

Thanks to all ORCA ops for another great net!

RR Steve we’ve been thinking of the need 4 NCS @ WDN I can spell someone or others who may pick up the challenge… I just committed to run a weekly training net on

VHF locally, so I’m not able to just take NCS 4 WDN I would help someone or others to keep WDN active I think it’s IMPORTANT! BK Over 2 Mindy W7ZAP 4
