*Called for COMMENTS only

The lighter than usual Roster tonight was welcome. Band condx turned out better than we predicted, but the FLAMP Exercise had us doubting ourselves.  We occasionally use unusual modes for the Exercise; modes we anticipate will fail.  The Exercise enables us to evaluate mode performance in various states of propagation.  A wide knowledge of modes enable us to choose the mode most likely to succeed quickly, w/o trial and error when speed is important. So, we sometimes choose modes we think marginal for current condx. That was the case tonight.

Oddly, five out of seven stations CONFIRMED the first pass in PSK63-RC5. PSK63-RC4,5 are not considered good candidates for poor HF band condx.  Even stranger, the two stations not CONFIRMING PSK63-RC5 missed most of the file.  Mindy W7ZAP may have the answer to this mystery. I couldn’t imagine how two stations could miss so much when five decoded the file perfectly. It seemed like my signal had seriously weak sectors. Mindy suggests these two stations had Squelch set too high for the mode.  We’ve noticed before that some modes need low Squelch setting or Squelch disabled.  We’ll test this theory with these same stations off-net when we can.

Three sessions from now, June 23rd, we hope to have a volunteer NCS for the Comment round. It’s an easy task that will expand your digital networking skills. If no one is interested, we’ll again work as we did tonight. We would also like to work the Off-Freq-Relay Exercise on June 23rd. That needs two volunteers. Think about it; it’s another easy Exercise that demonstrates how traffic is brought to the net by relay. This may be a new concept to those new to digital operations.  You can help teach others while you learn. We’ve done this a few times already.  If you’ve already worked this exercise, please consider doing another round.  Others will benefit from your effort.

Here’s the ORCA Ck-In Relay Macro. This Macro makes it easy to assist NCS during ck-in. We don’t get many weak ck-ins. Weak stations are logged QNX. Most of our net activity is interactive; we engage each Active station numerous time each session. Relaying weak signal stations for the FLAMP Exercise would significantly increase exercise time. ORCA sessions are already long. Relaying stations for exercises would so extend the net, Regulars would soon opt out. We’re structured to provide the best training experience we can for stations we can work directly. Weak stations at ck-in are logged QNX. On the log, not engaged, but Monitoring. We take Comments from QNX stations, time permitting.

Mindy’s FLDIGI crashed in the middle of the Signal Evaluation image in the Closing macro. She scrolled up in the RX buffer to copy text for Jaye KE6SLS. When she pressed Control-Copy, FLDIGI vanished. She later reenacted the event w/o issue; maybe just a software fart?

Images from the net. You’ll see when Mindy’s FLDIGI crashed, part way thru the Test image. We closed with Doug’s Macro, using our second antenna.

Thanks for taking time to practice with us tonight. We appreciate your participation and support. Let’s do it again next Tuesday evening.  Meantime, remember the ID ERC Digital Net tonight and Western Digital Net on Thursday evening, both on 3.581. By now, you probably know the rest of their sked details. Dave K7DV ERC/NCS and Steve K6ETA WDN/NCS will appreciate your support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 02/Jun/20

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex172.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex172.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

If you participated in the American Red Cross Communications Exercise last Saturday,
we’d like to hear about your experience in the Comment Round. We worked with teams
in Oregon and California. For us, it was more work keeping up with the nearly daily
revisions before the event than actually working the Exercise. We thought we could
support both teams by uploading OR/CA traffic in one Gateway connection. That plan
failed when the CA traffic came one by one, requiring multiple Gateway connections.

Although we could connect 40m Gates easily, we could not stay connected long enough
to pass one file. So many Ops were trying to connect, the Gate would soon drop us.
Poor band condx and the inexperience of some Ops contributed to hammering the Gates.
Our solution was 30m. We had no competition for Gate access on 30m and up/downloaded
our traffic easily. In Oregon, we sent and received ACK for the ARC#6409 form. For
California, we sent ARC#213 and received ACK. For California, we processed two other
ARC forms. We completed our assigned tasks. For California, we were outside HF relays;
they had only one HF Op with limited digital experience, backed by three HF Ops in
Oregon. All four HF Ops completed their tasks. VHF Ops had a couple issues, but
resolved them quickly.

Every week, we ask someone to Relay the call for Ck-In. You can do this easily with a
Macro. Check the website for useful ORCA macros: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

Tonight is another 3rd ORCA session where one member conducts the Comment round as
NCS, or you conduct the Round as a team, passing to the next Op on the Roster. Tonight,
we work as a team, the first Op passes to the next and the last Op returns the net to NCS.
We’ll help when stations don’t copy.

For the OPTIONAL FLAMP Exercise traffic, we ask you to change FLAMP’s default address,
‘QST’, to NCS, K7KY, or W7ZAP. This practice traffic is not QST (information for all
Amateur Ops); it’s part of the Exercise sent to NCS. A QST should be filled to all net
stations, but traffic addressed to NCS is exclusive to the sender and NCS.

Thank you for emailing Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

Great to see stations from such a wide range of western locations becoming regulars! I’m sun-burned from spending the day up on top of a 40FT water tower to put a linked repeater up on Sunday.

Also got a great job offer, close to home, that will allow me to continue to be on the air pretty much whenever I want. With the economy the way it is I either have a great guardian angel or it’s just the Life of Reilly. Im half Irish, so maybe both?

Anyway, the more sideways the world gets, the more I’m glad we have this Net!

Someone from the small city of Shelton, WA wrote a letter to intel@bearindependent.com, which was read and discussed on this morning’s daily brief on You Tube. As you know, the cities of Seattle, Portland, Bellevue, and Tukwila are under curfews due to rioting and looting that occurred a couple of days ago. The capital city of Olympia also had protests, but the rioters were unable to motivate the mob sufficiently and so no looting occurred there. Dissatisfied, they headed for Shelton, WA, about 30 miles north with the intent of vandalizing that small town. Somehow, some business owners in Shelton were tipped off that the rioters were enroute. The locals were able to quickly organize 60 townspeople, who armed themselves and took their stand in front of each business in town. When the rioters arrived and saw what they were up against from the citizenry, they got back in their vehicles and left.

COVID-19 took a very special person here in Humboldt today. He was our “paper boy”, then in his 70’s. He will be missed. RIP Winfred.
<https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2020/jun/2/winfred-grissom-former-t-s-deliveryman-and-docent/>

Oh dear, tonights is our OTA club meeting. Will won’t this just be a multitasking evening!

Had an absolutely beautiful day here today, 65 degrees, slight breeze, and SUN SUN and more SUN.

Today I delivered a high gain VHF/UHF antenna, mount, & coax to one of our newest hams. He showed me his very first HF radio he just finished BUILDING! The antenna was a friend of mine, now SK, so I am so glad that his gear will again graze the airwaves. Also am very excited about some of the new ham blood we welcomed over the last few months, despite COVID!

I DID participate in the ARC drill. But I did it as an Elmer for local hams. My OS is too old to install latest FLdigi/FL msg, and I have had no time to deal with upgrade while dealing with California disability… Hopefully I can update this in the coming weeks. Glad to know my help put Humboldt on the map with ARC and thanks to Ben kk6syj and Anthony kg6lhw! Great work guys!

I am noting some major highs and lows on the band tonight, but over all, really good copy on stations.

Things are beginning to reopen in the county I live in. Got a haircut for the first time since March on Saturday. Restaurants are open with social distancing. Still no confirmed cases of COVID in my zip code and not enough people to have a riot. That would be a bad idea in a rural area anyway.

Glad to have this net to hone my NBEMS skills and pick up news. I hope everyone is paying attention to their health both with exercise and nutrition.

ORCA NET de KG5DGI. Another difficult night of poor propagation, lots of piddle, but I did copy 3 messages at 100%, so won’t complain. Yes, to the ARC exercise – I participated as a monitor of our local county EMCOMM group – VHF digital and voice only – filling ICS 309 records for backup. Hectic, rapid, enlightening exercise. Now better prepared for the real thing.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB.
