ORCA welcomes 2 new stations; Ed KG7NGV in Tri-Cities,WA and David KZ9V in Eau Claire,WI. Band condx were not ideal, but we made the best of it. At the start of the net my background noise was S9. Doug K7KY used all MFSK for the weekly FLAMP exercise… MFSK-128/MFSK-64/MFSK-32 with good results.  Long skip was weaker than usual.  Bill K6QOG relayed fill blocks to more distant stations.

Greg KG7DMI sent a file during the Comment round explaining why his FLAMP file last week ended up 2nd in the FLAMP que although he was actually near the end of the roster. Good detective work Greg! Greg was asked to RELAY 2 blocks for the weekly FLAMP exercise and accidentally hi-lighted his own file instead of the exercise.  When it came time for his traffic, we all had already copied 2 blocks. Thanks for the update Greg. I’ll post his explanation below his FLAMP file in the COMMENT section of the log.

Carroll KF7ELY has a new callsign: W7WXV… a good call for the WX guy!  Below is Gene W1EEP’s test image which shows the weakness in long skip.

RX: W1EEP UT

Thanks for working with us and hope to see you on the WF again next Tuesday evening!

Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 02/April/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file ‘ex112xt’, an FLDIGI/PC EDITOR
/FLAMP exercise. If you complete the optional exercise, send that file to NCS
in the Traffic round tonight or any net.

Last week Steve K6ETA and Jaye KE6SLS demonstrated off-frequency traffic-
handling. They had the misfortune to encounter a Jammer on 3.577mhz. To
cope with the strong carrier directly on their freq, they began switching modes
quickly to find one that best tolerated the interference. Then they moved to
3.584 and ditched the Jammer. Their digital skills really paid off. Using the
TxID/RxID features in fldigi, they were able to switch modes quickly w/o
conversing. While passing traffic off the net frequency, Steve and Jaye
demonstrated digital skills, tactics, and Situational Awareness. Good work!

To help reduce net time, we introduced two changes last week. We want to
keep most practice traffic to a minute or so. Longer interesting/relevant
articles should be summarized and include a URL for those wanting more
information. Help manage net time by sending short files or QRU when
the active roster is large or band condx impede the net.

We’ve also changed the criteria for practice-traffic images. Please don’t use
color images for practice traffic. Grayscale images should complete in 30-
50sec. Check with NCS for all large or color images. These files can be
shared after net.

We’ve also changed the periodic call for late check-ins. When we look for late
stations, we’ll also call for Early Ck-Out so those wanting to skip the Traffic
and/or Comment rounds can leave early. When you leave early, be sure to
Ck-Out so we don’t burn valuable net time calling for you.

<EDIT: Greg KG7DMI’s file>
Last week my reply in traffic round went to the top of receiving stations Flamp list. After looking over the net reports I think I found the reason. I was asked by net control to fill blocks 3 and 4 of the Flamp exercise. As requested I sent the blocks. Block 4 wasn’t received and a resend was requested. When I sent block 4 for the second time, and I don’t know what I did for this to happen, Flamp sent block 4 of my reply. Not block 4 of the original file. Now, everyone receiving my signal has now has a partial file (a single block) of my traffic round file. So when it comes to my turn in the traffic round. Flamp sees my transmission as a completion of the file already started and on the list. So it completes the file at the top of the list instead of adding the file to the bottom of the list.

Now, what I did differently to send a different file the second try? I have no Idea. I’m still trying to figure that one out. I belive it has to do with manualing typing in the block number rather than using the “Fetch” button.

How did I figure this out? If you look at the identifier of each of my transmissions you will see that I actually send blocks 2 and 3 the first time. Opps!
DATA 88 5C21>{80F1:2}
DATA 88 79D9>{80F1:3}
Notice both are Data 88 and {80F1:x}. This matches the original FLAMP file sent by net control.
My resend of block 4 has a Hex Decimal identifier of DATA 72 20FE>{ACFD:4} Data 72 and {ACFD:x matches my reply sent in the traffic round.

And thanks to Doug’s help. I found in Flamp’s configuration the check boxes for Fldigi to follow FLAmp’s mode, rather than the other way around.
