In Fall, our Eastern colleagues return to the Roster. Tonight, we logged John KD0NBH & Rick K0KEX in Missouri and Steve WY7SJM in Wyoming. Steve managed some of the NBEMS Exercise before withdrawing @ 0254z. The improvement in 80m is timely; DST returns this weekend. An additional hour of daylight will set us back a bit, but the days are still lengthening. Propagation is what it is. When it’s poor, we get more Relay practice. Unlike Phone nets, digital nets endure terrible band condx w/minimal inconvenience.

Ck-In was more challenging than usual tonight. We process calling stations individually, one at a time. We can’t copy from the RX buffer while it’s scrolling. It doesn’t stop scrolling until transmissions cease. When the string we need goes off-screen, it takes even longer. When we send ‘Pse Stand By’, we’re asking the net to do just that, stand-by, don’t TX until we catch up. When we catch-up, we send ‘QRZ? ORCA DIGITAL NET Early Ck-In’. If you call after ‘Pse Stand By’, it again interrupts copying from the RX buffer.

Ck-In usually goes smoothly. ORCA Ops know net Protocols well. Stuff happens. Tough band condx contribute to Ck-In doubles and coattails. Western member may not always copy their Eastern colleagues. Only good fortune prevents us doubling stations we don’t copy.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Dan W6CTT in Clovis,CA and Welcome back to John KD0NBH in Kansas City, MO, & Rick WS7PB in Cave Junction,OR. Doug K7KY lived in Clovis,CA when he was a Grad student in the ’70’s.

Let’s keep TxID awareness on the front burner awhile longer. TxID is perfect for training our Situational Awareness or conscious focus (same thing). We’re making solid strides; we seldom see useless TxIDs during nets. Today, more Ops are changing to a faster mode for Traffic & Comments. This gives practice focusing on Mode & TxID in real time. When you’re regularly aware of these two variables, you can extend your focus to other NBEMS variables, like power, that should also be consciously managed rather than set & forget.

Managing power is important for Emergency Communications. We seldom know how long an event will endure. Stored power and the means to generate more may be limited. A minimum-power habit is important for EMCOMM Ops. A few weeks back, Doug accidently ran the 1st third of the net @ 5w. No one needed repeats. As band condx improve, we can all probably work the net w/less power.

Earlier this week, we were talking about ORCA members and the depth of their interest and skill. It reminded us of the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ event. Captain Scullenburger and 1st Officer Skiles surmounted a dire situation; a total loss of power at low-speed and low-altitude. A bird-strike 100 seconds after liftoff turned their Airbus A320 into a 65,000lb glider. 208 seconds of flight remained for them to make a execute a plan. Their plan enabled all 155 people aboard to survive. It was a remarkable and inspiring performance, enabled by years of training and practice. Their teamwork was flawless. While not in the same life-or-death category, ORCA Ops enjoy a similar capacity to process digital traffic under pressure. They practice weekly; their skills are current and sharp. It’s a pleasure to work and train with ORCA Ops!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Unless announced otherwise, every weekly session will have an NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. Monitors can work the Exercises silently and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

Guest NCS conduct the NBEMS Exercise on 1st Tuesdays. Tonight, Don KJ7VGV conducts the weekly NBEMS Exercise. You too can be a Guest NCS. Complete instructions and a Macro set are available. We hold a brief practice session for Guest NCS the 1st Monday every month. A QRP signal won’t suffice, but you don’t need an S9+ signal to conduct these Exercises. Relays are fundamental to traffic-handling on HF. Relay practice is always useful.

Speaking of Practice, we’re reminded of the two Pilots, Captain ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and 1st Officer Jeff Skiles, who landed their striken US Airways Flt#1549 Airbus A320 on the Hudson river; a ‘Miricle on the Hudson’. 100 seconds after take-off and 2,818 ft/AGL, they had 208 seconds from bird-strike to touchdown to understand and resolve their situation. In this amazing demonstration of skill, focus-under-pressure, and flawless teamwork, all 155 soles-on-board survived.

Captain Sully later said, “…for 42 years, I’ve been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. And on January 15 the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal.” ORCA Ops make weekly deposits to their digital-skills acount; should they be called to serve, their accounts will be sufficient.

RR Don  TU   nice Exercise w/more than usual participants   10 Active stations tonight.  BK   All stations    u notice that the Ex’ file didn’t read in the FLAMP window, but needed to use the file mgr to open the file.  You should be prepared 4 this    Don & Bruno KG7VVN who are runnuing the 1st of the month Exercises both use Mac OS. That seems to effect FLAMP’s ability to open the file.  You will have to follow the file manager to get it from storage… this can also happen to u during an Emergrency net too.   Remember, while working these Exericises, you’re first call is attending to net flow and listening for NCS call ing you  (-:    be prepared !   BK

Snowing like crazy in Joseph. I started the snow blower yesterday in preparation. Also one snow shovel and two scoop shovels to toss snow.
Band conditions have been wonderful on 80m. Very strong signals for the two ARES nets I check in to as well as ORCA and WDN. 10m has also been hopping with lots of signals from all over the country and other parts of the globe.
Doug: Great reference to Captain Sullenburg. You both drew vivid metaphors. All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

Last week, as a follow-up to our recent earthquake drill, I called our county’s OEM Program Cordinator with some feedback. To my surprise, the guy actually answered his phone. Very refreshing. I made sure to put in a plug for NBEMS. Again, though, it seems to me the focus is often more on increasing the number of participants than actually achieving helpful results. I refrained from being pushy or argumentative. Just put in my two-bits and thanked him for hearing me.
I find it way easier to read the exercise nstructions by fully opening them. I make less comprehension errors not trying to cheat that step no matter what is going on.
Was able to copy everyone’s exercises in FLAmp 100% tonight. Good job everyone and good conditions. That’s more than enough from me for this round.

Apologize for the confusion during check-in — accidentally hit the normal check-in button instead of QNX.  Feel like I’ve got the swing of things now, but am reluctant to become an active station until I can reliably copy something other than MFSK-32.  Last week was great; this week, meh. Part of it is local RFI, I’m sure, and I’ve isolated some of it, but there is SO much electronics in our house and most of the bulbs are LED.
