Band condx continue to improve. Long skip and NVIS were most welcome tonight. Contacts were generally solid for stations near and far. Check the images below; they’re much better than usual. Note John K6SM’s images. His first image is usually his best; the band usually deteriorates for him as evening progresses, but not tonight. Welcome back to Kai N6ZZO in Eureka,CA. It’s been awhile since he checked in. We’ve made numerous changes to net format since his last ck-in.

We need to do a better introducing new Ops to net format. We occasionally forget. Without a clear introduction, they naturally assume they should participate in net Exercises. The Exercises are designed to simulate a busy emergency net where critical traffic is handled swiftly. Most nets won’t actually run this fast. If you’re comfortable working these Exercises, you won’t be rattled when the situation is dire.

To run these Exercises briskly, we don’t stop to teach NBEMS fundamentals mid-Exercise. If you’re comfortable with the NBEMS apps, all aspects of the Basic and Advanced Exercises are easily learned by observation. Check in QNX and Monitor the net until you understand net format and the NBEMS Exercises. Work the Exercises silently while Monitoring and check your work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. When you can work the Exercises silently and successfully, you’re ready for prime time.

Here’s a Macro task that needs no special exercise to practice. Pay close attention during check-in. Most Ops check into digital nets by macro. You may have noticed that some Ops don’t follow ck-in protocol. This is true for other digital nets as well. We have four digital nets on 3.581, M-Th. They all have different ck-in Protocols.

One ck-in Macro is not suitable for all nets. During ck-in, pay attention to how other stations ck-in. Are they using a macro? Does their ck-in string match ck-in protocol? You should have a ck-in macro for every digital net you work. Ck-In Macros are among the simplist to create and/or modify. Begin making discreet macros for text you send often. Learn to use your macros in conjunction with other macros and keyboard entry.

Next session,08/Mar/22, we’ll send Comments and the ORCAtest.jpg in a single seamless transmission using the Path Evaluation Macro and the Comment Macro or kbd. In the order your choose, you’ll send our Test image by Path Macro and your comments in one seamless transmission with opening and closing ID, ie: ‘ORCA < K7KY’, ‘< K7KY’.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we return to the Basic NBEMS Exercise. The Basic Exercise doesn’t contain an Advanced Exercise or Traffic Round; it’s simpler and shorter than Advanced Exercises. The Basic Exercise can accommodate 12 stations; the Advanced Exercise accommodates 8 stations. We work the Basic Exercise the first three Tuesdays each month. Tonight’s Basic NBEMS Exercise concerns CW shorthand and Q-Codes for digital nets.

We use a few Q-Codes and lots of CW shorthand every session. See the list of our most used abbreviations on the website Quick-start page, Q-Codes Tab: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

QNI = request to ck-in (assumed, redundant)
QNX = request to be excused (when you ck-in QNX, QNI is implied/assumed)
QST = Announcement/Bulletin for Amateurs
QTH = your location

QRU = I have  NO traffic (we don’t use QRU, we’re not a Traffic net)

We’ll use the Path Evaluation Macro again next week, 08/Mar/22. You will send ORCAtest.jpg with the Path Macro and your Comments in a single transmission. We’re learning to combine keyboard w/macro, and macro w/macro, in a single seamless transmission. We’re also learning to see our macros as configurable tools. Save time building macros by copying a current macro to a blank button. Then, revise the copy as needed.

There are numerous ways to combine comments with the Path Evaluation Macro in a single transmission. To send Comment-Text and ORCAtest.jpg in one transmission, type or Paste your comments into the TX window. Click TX/RX Button first, then click the Path Evaluation Macro. Text will print first, followed by the image. After sending the image, the Path Macro will close w/your CALLSIGN and end transmission.

This Exercise can also be accomplished with two macros, the Path Evaluation Macro and the Comment Macro (see: website Macro page). You can send Image and Text in one transmission by clicking either Macro first followed by the other. For the Macro you start with, remove closing ID & <RX Tag so the transmitter remains on for the 2nd macro. Using 2 macros that usually stand alone, you need to revise beginning/end IDs in both Macros. You should be able to to this w/o specific instructions.

During next week’s Comment Round, participating stations will send our TEST image by Macro and Comments in a single transmission. That transmission should begin with ‘ORCA < URCALL’ and end with ‘< URCALL’. There are numerous ways to accomplish this exercise. Experiment. Try for the most efficient results w/minimal coding. Perfect your macros w/radio off. Test on-air with colleagues b4 net.

ORCA < WA7HHE, Welcome to  Kai N6ZZO, great net, sure you will enjoy.  Busy night tonight, neighbor  called from Riveside CA purchased a car, having it shipped here in Cedar City, asked if I could sign for it. Supposed
to be here no late than 3 PM this afternoon. Just got a call from the driver saying he would be here in about an hour an a half. Will have to break away from the net. Tomorrow morning will participate in a Table To exercise presented by power company on mitigating a complete loss of power to the city. Should be interesting.
Our Ecomm Group is preparing for our Regional Commms drill with our Health department on March 10th, keeping us hopping.
Everyone have a great evening.

This evening is the reverse of the usual —
I am hearing NCS really well (I confirmed FLAMP on first pass)
and some of the more distant stations are hearing NCS
not so well. So maybe NVIS-like conditions.

That last FLAMP pass really was “Narrow Band” — MFSK22!

I’m using the Comment Macro. Let’s see how it works…

^ My first attempt at compiling a mass signal report on the fly. Even a minimal report is every bit as difficult to quickly compile as I imagined it would be. Hat’s off to those of you who actually manage that on a regular basis, especially those who do it while also performing NCS duties!
