When 80m is predicted to be ‘very quiet’, it’s not good news. A number of stations had poor path to NCS and difficult copy tonight. Some didn’t copy the first test image at all. But, poor propagation was useful for the Mode Shootout. Good condx may not have revealed the performance difference between THOR-22 and MFSK-22. More on that in a moment.

With a weak and noisy band, logging 31 stations is remarkable. We only logged one station by Relay; 30 stations had adequate path to work NCS. Tonight, there won’t be any HF Phone nets anywhere near this success rate. Tough as current condx are, they make a significant contribution to our training regimes. Working in these condx will broaden and extend our traffic-handling skills.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Lamar AE6LJ in Briceland,CA. We’ll ask him to ck-in QNX and Monitor a few sessions before checking in to participate. The FLAMP Exercise is our main event every session. It usually takes new Ops a few sessions to sort it out. If you’ve been with us for awhile, you know the most common error new Ops make is trying to work the Advanced Exercises before they’ve mastered the basic Exercise. This Exercise moves briskly; it’s intended to push your current boundaries. There’s a lot to do in limited time; you have to be focused and know your digital station well. Emergency and Traffic net are unlikely to be this fast; you’ll have an extra margin of capacity and work more comfortably under pressure.

Poor band condx were good for our Mode Shoot-out; excellent condx may not have revealed a clear performance difference. Six stations participated in the Shoot-Out. Nine more stations reported in Comments or email. Five stations CONFIRMED THOR-22 and nine stations CONFIRMED MFSK-22 in a single transmission. Of the stations not CONFIRMING THOR-22, most missed one block; one station received only one block. Stations not CONFIRMING MFSK-22 also missed by one block with one station missing three blocks. These differences may be due to location, path, and antenna orientation. It was a good evening to compare THOR-22 with MFSK-22. Better condx may have made the difference in performance less obvious.

Check out tonight’s map. Over the last month or so, we’re connecting fewer mid-USA stations; none tonight. As the days get longer, 80m wakes up later. This hampers the more distant stations. We were unable to copy Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ at ck-in. Although distances are similar, we usually copy stations in UT & ID better than Steve in AZ. It may be due to the orientation of our antennas or his or just a persistent anomaly of our path to AZ.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the files, ‘ex222A.txt & ex22B.txt’, including an ADVANCED Exercise. If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls you for Traffic. Monitoring stations please report results by email.

Tonight we combine a Mode Shoot-Out with the FLAMP Exercise, comparing THOR-22 & MFSK-22.
THOR-22: 78wpm, 524hz
MFSK-22: 80wpm, 435hz

We’ll send one Exercise file with two names: Ex222A.txt(THOR22) & Ex222B.txt(MFSK22) and compile and publish the results tomorrow in the Net Report. Publishing tomorrow enables us to include Monitoring stations that often email Comments. If you CONFIRM both files, send only one Advanced Exercise when called for Traffic; they’re exactly the same.

We relayed for the 20m Digital Net again on Saturday. Band condx were not bad, but the CQ WW WPX CW Content peppered the net with QRM. We did a little better this week with four ck-ins and four Relays. If we don’t find a couple Relay volunteers soon, the net may flounder. It’s difficult to replace TSA’s 1kw remote station with a couple of Relay stations. We need a few more scattered across the country. If you have a strong 20m signal, please consider helping. It doesn’t take much time on Saturday morning.

For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
Test images reflect your path to NCS. (more file location/manipulation practice)

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Tnx for the early test images… they help me understand the band RX for net members

Our Mode-ShootOuts are interesting and informing, but unscientific. A radio fart or poor path will effect your results, but overall, we’ll learn a little about the modes. We’ve not run a ShootOut for more than a year. MFSK-22 clearly outperformed THOR-22. MFSK has slightly faster word speed and much less bandwidth. MFSK is

robust and dependable. < K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
