No one is whining about band condx tonight. We copied all 32 ck-ins without issue. Thanks for your patience while we sorted out Roster errors. Although we start every net from a fresh reboot, Doug’s PC needed another.

The Basic NBEMS Exercise went exceptionally well. We usually begin NBEMS Exercises in a fast but sensitive mode and Fill with modes more likely to succeed in challenging band condx. While practicing traffic-handling, we’re also learning which modes are most appropriate for HF band condx. We were surprised to have six of nine stations CONFIRM the first pass in PSK63-RC4. PSK63-RC4 incudes FEC. The three remaining stations all CONFIRMED the 2nd pass in THOR-50×1. Although all stations were CONFIRMED in two passes, we asked Don KJ7VGV to Relay the file in MFSK-32 for the benefit of Monitors working the Exercise silently.

Experimenting with the Path Evaluation Macro was interesting and also went well. This Macro is more complex than those we’ve created previously. At this end, we’re learning to write clear and concise instructions. It’s an ongoing challenge. While everyone’s macro worked, they didn’t all work 100%. 80% correct is a good result for first use.

Top 3 Best-Heard stations:
W6ADZ:   7
KG7VVN: 4
KJ7VGV:  3

The instructions regarding Color/Grey scale may not be clear.

“4) <IMAGE:> default is Color. For Grayscale images, insert the argument, ‘G,’ after the colon, <IMAGE:G,> exactly as in the Example below. Grayscale images take .5x/time of Color. Image transmits in 33sec. Name and Save.”

Let us know if we can improve them.  As to the small images, the instructions were to Download the macro instructions text file and the test-image file from the website. Download and Copy give different results in this instance. The thumbnail differs from the original in size and name. The name discrepency is a clue that the instructions or your understanding are amiss.

“The Path Evaluation Macro Instructions and Image are available to download in the website sidebar, visible from any page:    http://orcadigitalnet.com

We’ve been mystified as to why the Path Evaluation Macro instructions have been downloaded 140 times and the test-image only 65 times. Many have copied the thumbnail instead of downloading the actual image. They differ in size and name. WordPress automatically added the thumbnail. We’ve removed it; only download is possible now.

Back to tonight’s Macro experiment, we twice sent, ‘send the two images you received best’. This may seem insignificant, but sorting thru 9 images when we can’t see them all at once takes a lot of time. Maybe it’s too much to ask Ops to do at home too. We can easily avoid sorting thru many images by limiting the number of images sent. We hoped to get other benefits from working with Macros like exploring the path between member stations. Exploring path helps us evaluate our QTH, station, antennas, etc.

“Instead of the usual net-start/end test-images, please send two member-sent images. Send the two images you copy best.”

“Only send the two best member-images tonight.. no images from the beginning or end of net..”

Numerous Ops sent the opening test-image. Thank you. It gives us an idea of how the band is working for everyone. Tonight you would not know not to send that image. The instructions were first published in Announcements, much later than the image was sent. We understand. On occasion, we don’t realize all the ramifications of an action until it done and evaluated.

If you made a mistake, don’t feel put-upon or singled out. We’re in this together. Although our main focus is digital networking and traffic-handling, reading comprehension is fundamental. Same for writing clear and concise instructions. We’re all learning as we go. And, we’ve come a long way together. We deeply appreciate your participation, support, and feedback.

The FLAMP Tip for ‘Enable Header Modem’  in the Basic NBEMS Exercise tonight isn’t working. We’ve not had time to learn more, but it’s not working like it did a year ago when the Tip was written.  We don’t know what’s up; there may be more information about this issue on the NBEMS Forum. This feature is seldom used and could be effected by a Version change w/o notice. We’ve been too busy to follow the forums lately.  If you know what’s up with this feature, please let us know.

Thanks for being patient w/us. Mindy is much busier helping her Mom these days and Doug is dealing with a deteriorating back injury and advancing age. We love working with you and wouldn’t trade the opportunity for anything.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

January, our 9yr Anniversary month, is over and ORCA DIGITAL NET heads into it’s 9th year of service. We deeply appreciate your participation and support. We couldn’t do it without you. ORCA is the learning environment; you are the working examples that incoming stations observe and emulate. Thanks for all you do.

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Tuesdays are BASIC NBEMS Exercise sessions. Tonight we’ll run the Basic NBEMS Exercise. No Traffic Round. Monitoring (QNX) stations can Fill or CONFIRM the Exercise file in the Monitor’s Session directly after net.

Last session, we forgot our plan to experiment with the Path Evaluation Macro.  During tonight’s Comment Round, we’ll ask the Active stations to send the test-image with the Path Evaluation Macro before their Comments. Instead of the usual net-start/end test-images, please send two member-sent images. Send the two images you copy best. We’ll publish the results in the Net Report. We’ll be learning something about path quality between member stations.

This Thursday, 03/Feb/22 is Newcomers Net at Western Digital Net. Steve K6ETA is NCS; guest NCS are encouraged. Every first Thursday is WDN’s Newcomer’s Net. Steve is ready to answer questions and demonstrate digital routines and tactics.  WDN is the only full service digital Traffic net serving western US; it’s members are experienced and friendly. Check it out.

The band is the best it’s been in a very long time!  Great to see 100% copy on so many stations tonight.

Last two days have been beautiful but quite windy.  My station finally reached 100% capacity charge since winter set in this past Saturday. Now the problem is we need A LOT MORE RAIN/SNOW–current indicators predict lower water levels than the last six years-not so good

We are conducting a Humboldt ARC meeting.  So my normal signal report may be lacking.  I am using FLDigi as well as Audacity to record our ON THE AIR meeting.  My 2005 Thinkpad seems to be handling the additional load well   Love Linux!

Finished out HARC meeting and it’s now 8:04 PT.  Enjoyed welcoming some of our newest hams tonight!

Not sure if I inderstand tonight’s instructions about sending best 2 images.  I’ll go back through copy and try to figure it out! :|

Sure hope all are doing well.  Will keep an eye on the WF for all
of our amazing digital ops!

Our little club here is Southwestern Utah came together and enjoyed a fun weekend while making contacts on most of the bands. Several members tried out new antenna’s as-well-as working off the tower. I do not have the statistics yet but I belive we are in the high 200’s on contacts. The felowship of members was good to see along with the great food that was brought by our members to share.  I’ll send you a copy of the after action report when completed.  Plerase stay safe. 73 to all. w6dlw
