Preparing for nets usually involves making a guess about band condx. Selecting FLAMP Exercise modes depends on this guess. Previously, band condx improved somewhat as the evening progressed, but lately it’s been the reverse for some regions. Tonight, John KS6M in Oakland,CA checked in with a marginal signal and was gone by the FLAMP Exercise. Our path to Dave K7DV has also been difficult lately. We copy him well, but it’s not working for Dave.  We’ve noticed more one-way propagation lately.  When condx seem particularly tough, we think of the Phone nets.  It’s much worse for them; w/o relays, they would be out of business.

Welcome to first-time ck-in Jordan KC9PXM at Mountain Home AFB,ID. It’s good to have another Idaho station aboard. Our path to Idaho has been marginal lately. Hopefully, band condx will continue with slow and sporadic improvement.

Thank you for following our Ck-In Protocol. A key portion of ORCA training is ‘Reading Comprehension’. Traffic handling often entails parsing and implementing written instructions. All digital nets have Protocols and conventions; they differ in mission and structure. W/o reading and understanding net Protocols, we’re not likely to work a net correctly. Following ORCA Ck-In Protocol is important for a Training net; new Ops are learning to work the net by observing the regular members. The weekly net is our primary Teaching event. You are the Instructors.  You’re doing a great job; membership continues to increase. Thanks again!

We’ve been emailing with Matt KD8TTE in Bexley,OH. He’s with the Ohio Buckeye Net. The Buckeye Net is a decades-old ARES/NTS CW Traffic net. This year, they decided to include data modes, ‘Buckeye Net Mixed Modes’. We think you’ll find their path to digital traffic operations interesting and informative. See the following URLs:

How to use Buckeye Net Mixed Mode (excellent net primer)

Buckeye Net Mixed Mode is a good example of digital Traffic and Emergency nets we are training to support. Their net structure is well organized and outlined. They provide a set of macros to match net Protocols. BNM will require careful parsing and monitoring before joining to participate. Some of our members are close enough to Ohio to work BNM. We hope some of you will work BNM and share your experience with ORCA Ops.

?ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex198.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

The Exercise question tonight is a rerun; it’s relevant to traffic-handling. The Exercise
questions require file-manipulation, but are not the point of the Exercise.

NOTE to newer ORCA Ops: Thanks for working with us. We hope you will become a regular
ck-in. You will be doing most of your training here by observation and emulation. You
should already be familiar with the core NBEMS apps. Monitoring net sessions will show
you how we use them to process traffic. You will simultaneously learn the protocols
and conventions of Directed digital nets. When you’ve grasped these fundamentals, ck-in
to participate.

The FLAMP Exercise is designed to simulate a busy Traffic or Emergency net. It gives
practice in completing written instructions correctly while retaining focus on your position
in a busy net. It’s also designed to give mastery of the NBEMS features and tools. Better
to learn and polish these skills on a Training net where errors are expected, than
‘winging-it’ during an Emergency and hindering net flow.

New ORCA Ops should ck-in QNX to Monitor a few sessions and work the Exercise silently.
We call a special session for these stations immediately after closing. We take Monitor
Questions and Comments, and CONFIRM or FILL their Exercise files. This provides the
practice they need to learn the Exercise. When they’ve mastered the primary Exercise,
NCS will check them in to participate.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

This morning on the way to work it was 13 degrees under clear skies. I do not like cycling in such weather, as my fingers go numb even inside heavy ski gloves. The

high today in Gallup NM was about 55 degrees under clear and sunny skies. With an elevation of 6510 feet; it is the frigid nights that are the problem here. My 40 foot

telescoping black fiberglass Spiderbeam mast on the back of the camper will undoubtedly freeze in the upright position tonight. But I have figured it out. Tomorrow is

my day off, and I will wait until the sun comes up and melts the ice, then will be able to put the mast down. I am running the Westinghouse I-2500 generator for

electricity to run everything, especially the fan to the propane heater. I am looking forward to Spring. COVID patients are about one third of the beds in the hospital

now and I am being exposed to it daily. ORCA keeps me sane. Thanks to Doug and Mindy!

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jordan KC9PXM in Mountain Home AFB,ID. We’ll ask Jordan to ck-in QNX a few sessions to learn ORCA conventions and protocols and the FLAMP

Exercise. Reading the Quick-Start Guide twice is also useful.

I worked briefly at Mountain Home AFB in the 70’s, installing command/control explosives in a Titan ICBM silo. Quite an adventure. This was the final task b4 turnkey

and there was significant pressure to have it done yesterday. They kept a helocopter on the launch pad to fetch anything we might need, so besides tools from town,

they also brought pizza!

This excerpt from last month’s American Red Cross Exercise, Final Report:

“After many hours of number-crunching by our Divisional Clearinghouse managers, the results are in: a staggering 1,750 messages were sent by 1,550 amateur radio

operators in forty-seven states, plus Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Canada. This is about twice the number of the very successful first Drill in Spring of 2020.”

Two of three FLAMP Exercise Ops got the question correct. We MUST stay in the Receive window to Relay fill blocks. Moving the file to the Transmit window causes FLAMP

to assign a new CHECKSUM#.

Hats off to Bruce KB7VX/P for coping with really adverse WX in Gallup,NM. Camping and riding his bike to work in freezing WX. Phew! We also have a 40′ Spiderpole and

we’ve never considered having to thaw it out to take it down.
