Band condx are still in irons. The NBEMS Exercise reveals how individual stations experience the band. The difference can be surprising. The Net Report ORCAtest image-table presents these differences graphically. Thanks again for emailing ORCAtest images for for the Net Report.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Herman KI7ARP in Pine Valley,Utah. Gene W1EEP also lives in Pine Valley. Gene has been with us for many years. Gene has more ORCAtest images on the server than anyone. There must be millions of these images stored on the server by now. Removing any of them would compromise ORCA archives.

Welcome back to Barry KJ7WHE in Nampa,ID; it’s been awhile since we’ve seen him on the WF. Barry is an ex-submariner who served on nuclear subs as a nuclear-electrician. We have another submariner on ORCA, but having learned this off-net, we shouldn’t say more. We’re fortunate to have numerous ex-military Ops onboard. They’re usually focused, disciplined, & dependable. We can say the same for our colleagues with other backgrounds. Actually, these are personal traits.

Don KG7VGV’s NBEMS question this evening extends our knowledge of undocumented FLDIGI features. Strategies and tactics we discover and develop contribute to our constellation of traffic-handling skills. We’re uncertain how the ‘Standard Format’ option will be utilized. When NTS initially developed, there were no digital nets. Most Radiogram traffic was delivered by Phone(voice). Dave W1HKJ likely added this option thinking traffic will also be delivered digitally. This option only works for transmission. The received file cannot be changed by unchecking, ‘Standard Format’. We’ll need to know how the message will be delivered before unchecking the box. To my knowledge, punctuation must still be converted to labels for formal NTS traffic. For H&W traffic delivered by email, we could use this option. There’s more to learn about this undocumented FLMSG feature.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

This is the 1st Tuesday of August. The NBEMS Exercise will be conducted by Don KJ7VGV. We’re again practicing with the FLAMP Radiogram, the most-used form for Health & Welfare traffic.

Don’s Exercise question reflects our focus on brief & concise written instructions. We strive to explain things clearly, without unnecessary text. Brief & Concise writing has a learning curve for most of us. We tend to write as we speak, but we can usually write concisely with clarity and brevity as our guide. It does take practice. We try to set a good example every session. ORCA Ck-In is an example of exchanging only what’s essential to the task. Most of the net is structured similarly; the Comment Round is different.

Thank you for keeping the Comment Round about personal events and Amateur Radio. We’ve done well by leaving Politics, Religion, Race, & Culture to other venues. Western Digital Net is open to non-radio topics. Some are very germane to EMCOMM support and practice.

We’re still working on balun issues with our main antenna. We’re replacing a LDG 200w 4:1 balun with a 4:1 Balun Designs #4116 Hybrid 3kw. We’ve shortened the antenna from 210′ to 180′ by removing 15′ dangling from element ends. This antenna has been noisier than the 135′ doublet. Likely the vertical ends gathered some additional noise. We now have 4 bands working as b4, but no joy w/Top Band.

Next we’ll alter the feed line. Currently, this antenna is fed with about 115′ of 600ohm ladderline. 160m on this antenna needs a feedline of 79′ or 175′. We may try using 450ohm or 300ohm ladderline we can run back’n forth under the eves to accommodate additional length. It’s challenging to get reasonable SWR on 160m thru 20m with one feedline length. Each band needs an odd multiple of 1/8 wavelength. 160m antennas are challenging.

I’ve been ultra-focused on my new 3D printer this last week, almost done using up an entire 1KG spool of filament :). Been super productive, I found a nice tool organizer I printed to organize my 3D printer tooling, I designed and printed a nice little tool rack for a handful of tools I keep on my desk, I designed and printed an organizer that fits under my desk with drawers that sit flush to the desk to hold little items, I designed and am currently printing a mounting bracket to hold spool of prototyping wire I use, along with a dozen or so other things I printed.

73s, see you all next net!

With flamp set to send the header twice, if you tell it to send blocks “0,0”, it will send four copies of the header. Perfectly rational. Not what I expected, but I guess it is what I should have expected. Now I know.

Lots of clouds today at cabin but minimal chance of rain out here. Hopefully will be able to complete the last
wall and pour cement and call this project done. Tonights exercise on the Radiogram was important as the developer
Dave w1hkj defaulted the form for phone nets. Unchecking “Standard Format” found in the middle of the form above
TXT box, makes the form use less words and keeps the special characters that cuts down Tx time for digital nets.

I did not copy KS6M on the first and second modes but finally got his confirmation on third mode. Also sorry I called
WA7JYK instead of WA7HHE on third mode but at least everyone confirmed.

ORCA < K7KY Thanks to Brad for helping keep WDN alive.

I love 1st Tuesdays when Don KJ7VGV and Bruno KG7VVN conduct NBEMS Exercises. When Mindy is NCS, I have a vacation of sorts.

Useful NBEMS Exercise question, Don. I’d paid no attention to that check box until now. This feature trims a little overhead from Radiogram traffic. Discovering and disseminating unknown/undocumented FLDIGI suite features that enable useful tactics and procedures is an ORCA strength.

I was going to describe the ‘Standard Form’ Ck-Box, mid-page on the Radiogram form, but Don covered it. Great job with the NBEMS Exercise, Don.

If we had a 3D printer, I’d print up post-net popcorn. We often put double/triple block numbers in the Blk window, but FLAMP only occasionally sends what we want. Mostly, it ignores the doubles. BTN < Doug K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
