The band held together tonight and the weekly FLAMP exercise led by Doug K7KY was completed in one round; no fills necessary. The net rolled along quickly too; we finished by 20:09 PDT (39min).

This week’s FLAMP exercise asked, “If you could make one change, addition, deletion, to ORCA DIGITAL NET, what would it be?”

Here are the responses so far:

K6ETA: Get rid of TXID once the net starts unless the mode needs to change.

We considered this idea a couple years ago when our membership was somewhat less skilled. Tonight we made 86 discrete transmissions. TxID takes a little less than 3sec. TxID consumed 4min+/- of net time. We can complete and CONFIRM an average FLAMP practice message in that time. That’s significant. With this automatic feature disabled, Ops wanting to use another mode will have to notify the net before sending. Then, every Op would have to enable TxID or set the mode manually. If enough members agree, we can experiment with this suggestion. Another idea might be for NCS to disable TxID. This would save more than half the 4min, but leave automatic mode ID active for members. Much time can be consumed trying to get everyone ‘on-mode’ w/o the automatic mode ID feature.

WA7HHE: I throughly enjoy the ORCA net, possibly as an exercise have net members send in Infrastructure Damage Assessment Reports to NCS

We’re not familiar with this form yet. We can probably use this form in our weekly FLAMP exercise.

K7KY: Stop calling non-responding Ops a 2nd time, but recheck them at the end of rotation.

Last week, when a station didn’t answer our call in rotation, we called the next station w/o recalling the first. We came back to the missing stations at the end of the roster, before moving to the next event. Sometimes the called Op is having reception issues or is away or distracted. It happens to everyone now and then. The net seems to flow more easily this way, but it’s only an experiment at this time. Let us know how it works for you as we go forward.

TX: W7ZAP OR RX: W1EEP UT

Following the net Doug K7KY sent an FLAMP ASCII list of all the stations that checked into ORCA during the last 2yrs. Doug, Steve K6ETA, Dave K7DV, & Jaye KE6SLS experimented with THOR 50×1, 8PSK-125, MFSK128, & MFS64 for an hour or more. TxID & RxID were very useful here; they changed modes frequently. Doug KA7FOO popped in at the end. He’d been monitoring. We’ll be doing more mode experimenting during the net this summer. You are always welcome to send traffic in any appropriate mode you think the band will support.

Thanks for practicing with us again tonight. We appreciate your contribution to learning and practicing digital traffic handling skills. Hope to work with you again next Tuesday evening.

ORCA ANNOUNCMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex18.txt’, an optional
file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS
during TRAFFIC round, or send your own practice message, or QRU.
This multitasking exercise provides practice in processing traffic
while maintaining focus on net operations.

There are many reasons Ops don’t respond directly when NCS calls,
some are unavoidable. When you don’t respond, we’ll move on to the
next station and call you again at the end of rotation. Please
wait for NCS to call you then. This will help keep the net moving
and save a little time.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
