Never mind diminishing short-skip, the greater challenge tonight was interpreting NBEMS Exercise instructions. Oddly, this Exercise is similar to many we’ve worked successfully numerous times. This evening, some couldn’t locate the Preamble, others located the Preamble, but couldn’t determine which paragraph was last. It doesn’t look good for the instruction writer. Jaye KE6SLS answered correctly. Email your comments on Exercise instructions if you like. Yes, the file number was wrong too.

We’re always interested in comments and questions from Monitors and Lurkers. The after-net Monitor’s Session is organized for those who work the NBEMS Exercise silently. You can send an FLAMP Report to Fill missing blocks, or send the Exercise file for CONFIRMATION. You can also comment or ask questions.

Some ORCA minutia. Why do we send partial Rosters during early Ck-In? Main reasons: 1) Ops can see they’re on the Roster and logged correctly. 2) It helps occupy the frequency. There are occasional gaps between Ck-Ins. The partial Roster fills blanks that may be interpreted as an available freq. Thanks for a remarkably orderly ck-in every week.

TxID can also be used for focus training. It should be disabled for ORCA except when changing mode for Traffic or Comments. Monitor TxID as you do other important settings like frequency, mode, power, etc. TxID isn’t a set’n forget feature. Some nets, Idaho ERC Emergency Digital Net for example, want RxID and TxID active. Nets vary widely in Protocol. Net Protocols are key to order and efficiency.

Thanks for including the Postamble text with the Test images tonight. A number of stations copied the text 100% @ 5w. You’ll see in the images below that even @ 5w, the image is recognizable. Some that didn’t print text, copied a recognizable image.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise is similar to last week’s Exercise. You’ll creates a Plain Text file in FLMSG or generic Text Editor like Notepad. If you use FLMSG, there’s two additional steps. 1) Output Plain Text via ‘View/Plain Text’ Menu. 2) Rename file to ‘URCALL_ex284.txt’.

Last session, we experimented with altering Macros on-the-fly. We altered the Path Evaluation Macro to use once-only. Because we didn’t Save changes, the Macro reverted to it’s original form when we closed FLDIGI or changed to another Macro file. Altering Macros in the moment is groundwork for creating new Macros on-the-fly.

You can make macros on-the-fly using basic Tags you can enter from memory: <TX>,<RX>,<CALL>,<MYCALL>.

Tonight we’ll send the closing Text and Image @ 5w. When you email the TEST images, please include the closing Text. We’d like to see how well you copied 5w.

Thanks for running the net tonight, not much going on here, recently hiked up Big Rock Ridge, second highest point in my county, and performed my first SOTA activation. 22 FM contacts on 2m. Other than that, I have not fully pieced my shack back together so I am unable to use VHF/UHF right now. Anyways, thanks for running the net and here are my signal reports. Filled with worry tonight.  My #1 puss hasn’t been seen since 7:45am this morning.  Called neighbors to chk garages and no reports.  I hope he just found a good snuggle spot and will turn up soon.  He is a serious muncher, never late for supper.  This house is WAY too big without my little Fritzypuss.  Powerful worried. Had a quick chat with Bruce kb7xv today.  I’ll paste our qso in my comments below.
Darned cold this AM.  Frost and more frost.  Have a winter storm on the way and good chance it’s going to dump some big snow/rain. For Del Norte, Humboldt, & Mendocino coasts, above 2000′ 7-24″ snow!  The day started at 33 degrees.
PKS-250R doesn’t provide an S/N I noticed tonight. At 19:50 noticed NCS has dropped rapidly in signal stength.  Might be a struggle for me this close to NCS!  Thought about doing 2x whole msg but decided to resend only header x2.  Also reduced my blk size to 64 for tonight’s ex.

outstanding!  Just in time before winter REALLY sets in.  We have wind warnings too, but only 40MPH so that’s a normal storm, nothing new about that, but in just 1000′ there’s gonna be a lot of snow from this one, so travel is going to be hindered and then after that, it’s all rain/snow for next 10 days.  Winter might FINALLY be arriving here.
Good to C U om.  Stay well and I guess next thing you got to buy is a highdeck mower to keep the vegitation at bay!

I didn’t do well with the Exercise instructions tonight, sri.  I mis-numbered the file. Tonight should be #285.    How better to say, ‘…the last paragraph in the Preamble’?  Your thoughts? BTN  < Doug K7KY
