Our first Summer Sked session wasn’t as easy as we anticipated. We always run a practice session before the actual net. The tune up prepares us for the net. Thinking the net w/o the FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round would be much easier to manage, we skipped pre-net practice. We won’t do that again. Ck-in wasn’t as smooth and easy as usual. Ck-in was light at first, but picked up speed after the top of the hour. As ck-in increased, a station began calling CQ. Doug tried to get his attention by email. Next came a politically focused FLMSG transmission. Not everyone understands how digital nets operate. Ck-in usually goes like clockwork; you’ve spoiled us and we were unprepared for events a bit off the reservation. Stuff happens. We’ll be back up to speed next Tuesday.

Band condx were unfavorable for many stations tonight, but the net went well in spite of condx. Digital modes really shine when band condx are limiting. Without the FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round, we have more time for Comments. Net members will be interested in a summary of your Field Day 2021. We are also interested in AAR summaries of EMCOMM Drills and Exercises. Our Comment Round is traditionally focused on radio related topics, but we expanded that format in January 2020 to include health issues related to the COVID19 Pandemic. We continue with this policy.

25 stations on the Roster is typical for Summer sessions. We hope you’ll continue to ck-in during Summer Sked. We want to remain in contact with our digital colleagues. This Summer appears more likely to have unusual, even unprecedented events; we want to remain ready. Meantime, we can send and receive traffic and interact with our colleagues every Thursday evening @ Western Digital Net. WDN’s format is unchanged; all traffic-handling services are available.

There’s a new and unusual digital net out of Humboldt County, California, run by ORCA colleagues. HUMCO Winlink Wednesday Net, Matthew KN6CEI/NCS. HUMCO-WW provides practice with Winlink Protocols, Gateways, and Forms. Matthew sends weekly pre-net ck-in instructions. It’s an excellent opportunity to get handy working Winlink traffic using Winlink forms or attaching agency-specific forms like ARRL, ARC, etc. Ck-in and check it out. Practice with different digital traffic systems will expand our digital skills.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight is the first Summer Session of ORCA DIGITAL NET; we’ve not done this before. Ck-In and the Comment Round will be our only events until 18/Sep/21. We hope this helps our colleagues enjoy a more leisurely summer while maintaining contact with our network. We’ve put a lot of time into practicing digital networking and NBEMS
traffic-handling here on 3.581. It’s important to maintain our place on Tuesday evenings. There are 3 other digital nets that share 3.581 with us. Currently, our frequency is under siege by VARA Gateways and P2P VARA experimenters. 3.581 could easily become difficult to use if this continues.

We’ll continue sending the test image at both ends of the net. Signal reports are always useful. We can run an FLAMP Exercise or Mode Shoot-Out occasionally, that’s up to the membership.

Ck-In protocol is unchanged for Summer Sessions.
Please Send on one line:
‘CALLSIGN’ only for ck-in & Comment Round
‘CALLSIGN QNX’ to check in&out (Monitor)
‘CALLSIGN, NAME, QTH [QNX]’for 1st Ck-In only

For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
Test images reflect your path to NCS. (more file location/manipulation practice)

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

The COMMENT round begins with Dennis W6DLW < W7ZAP

ORCA NCS< We received some rain today as a few Thunder Showers passed over head. Summer Feild Day was a success and most participating menbers seemed to enjoy the event. I’ll be doing an After Action Report (AAR) and will send you a copy when ready. I trust you both are doing well? Be safe. 73 to all. W6DLW

Tnx Dennis, we’ll be interested to read ur AAr… u might want to send to ORCA next week and share w/the net (if not too long!)

We had a great field day. We even had a bit of rain the night before. I had an opportunity to try out my new DX Commander fan verticle and it seems to work well. I had just completed it at the start of field day. We had lots of hams participating and we all had a great time.

More rain today and things are cooling off a bit here. Hope everyone has a safe fourth of July and that you are not suffering in the heat.

73s everyone!

No surprise that RCRC had a good turnout for FD21… u guys have a lot of active hams… glad u all had a good time

W7ZAP/NCS < K6ETA Thanks for running the Net tonight Mindy! Well the Lava Fire is 12 miles North of us and thankfully the prevailing wind blows North this time of year! So far so good at our QTH though our hearts go out to those evacuating in Lake Shastina (where we nearly bought a home).

Still cleaning up after my daughter’s GREAT wedding that we hosted here. It was hot but nobody keeled over. Missed most of FD 2021 tho…

Automated VARA signals may actually be violating Part 97 Rules down here. Some are Canadian, so not sure about their rules, but many are US stations. If you want to operate an automated station READ Part 97 please! Would hate to see digital ops fined or sent pink slips! It also makes WL2K and BPQ ops look bad (all of them) when we don’t self-police!

Great Net and I hope ops keep up on their skills through the summer sked!

73 de K6ETA

Hate to hear about fires… hope they’re out soon. Glad to hear wedding was great!
We’ll have to contact VARA ops and see what we can do… will hv to think about how to best go abt that.

The power line noise has become very intermittent–sometimes it is all consuming and other times it ticks then buzzes then is quiet. Still haven’t seen PG&E truck here to investigate.

Temp here today reached an unbearable 69 degrees. :)

I’m plenty worried about Steve, k6eta. The Lava fire is over 14k as of last report. Steve sent me some very scary pictures of it today.

I did have fun, even through that power line noise, during Field Day this year. I was surprised to discover I made exactly 100 QSO’s!

Good to see you all on the WF tonight

Be safe and lets hope no fireworks spark fires. ohhhhh man.

Our first Summer Sked session; much easier for NCS (-: We hope you’ll continue to ck-in. It’s important to retain contact between net members, even though we’re not practicing this Summer. The potential for wildfires is as high as ever and the level of political and social unrest doesn’t portend well. Let’s hope we won’t be needed, but remain ready.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first time ck-ins Earl KJ6DQR in Cathedral City,CA and Kevin KE7IN in Underwood,WA. They’ve arrived just in time for the Summer Sked w/o FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round. These events will return on 18/Sep/21.

Thanks for your patience @ ck-in. Thinking this session w/o FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round would be very easy, we skipped our usual B4 net dummy session. That didn’t work out so well. We were a bit behind the curve. Next week, we’ll go back to practicing B4 net. There was some additional confusion with tuner-uppers, VARA, someone calling CQ and then sent an OT FLMSG file. Check-in can be busy enough w/o QRM. At least, not so much VARA tonite.

We thought Summer Sked would be easy, but it doesn’t seem so tonite. < Doug K7KY

Summer sked will get easier as we get used to it… feels like I’m in the hot seat tonite!
