Great net tonight. A little long, but smooth and efficient. Nice work, all around. We had a small glitch in the weekly FLAMP exercise, but it didn’t hang us up. Mindy & I are working well together at the NCS end. Mistakes can turn into great learning experiences. Some of you might remember our early days when we opened and closed the net on phone. It was very easy to maintain net order and sort out problems. Now, we communicate very well in the all-digital mode and the net runs smoothly; an endorsement of our skilled membership and the evolution of our protocols.

Tonight we began another file manipulation exercise of emailing the Signal Evaluation Image. I envisioned everyone emailing me the images as received and I would post them to the web so we can see how each station received NCS. But, I think I was too vague in defining the exercise. Only four Ops emailed images. If you do send images, please send only the actual file. If you capture additional data, like the boarder created by fldigi, the images are larger and need to be manipulated prior to posting.

Welcome to Gary AF7NX in Eugene,OR. And, welcome back to Anthony KG6LHW in Blue Lake,CA. There were lots of interesting articles tonight and a couple images too. Thanks to Brad WA7HHE for sending his traffic in the ICS-214 form. We’ve not previously used the ICS-214 Incident Report form.

A number of Ops have asked if the 1300 Saturday ORCA check-in will be ongoing. It certainly can, but I hadn’t thought that far forward. It’s important to be familiar with operating conditions at all hours. Mindy & I are unable to commit to NCS another net right now. It could begin with a simple check-in. If there’s enough interest, it could include a quick practice session like our brief weekly FLAMP exercise. If you would like to NCS a daytime ORCA session, please let me know and I’ll set you up.

Here’s the ORCA images I received and images from the Traffic round:

Don’t forget our friends in Los Angeles,CA, Rick N6IET and Steve K6WSJ. Rick is recovering from surgery and Steve is still engaged in medical procedures. Sometimes, the procedures are as daunting as the illness. Thanks for taking time to compile reception reports. They’ve become much more detailed and specific. It’s very useful information. And, thanks for working with us tonight. CU next week, I hope. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 27/sep/16

Tonight we return to our regular net routine with the addition of a

simple exercise related to our b/w signal evaluation image. Please

email this image to NCS. This provides practice receiving, saving,

and emailing images. Like our last exercise in editing and resending

text files, it requires the knowledge to manipulate files between

fldigi and other PC applications.

Email the image and and any comments to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

We will post the collage of images in the Net Report, similar to the

Received Images page generated by Kim Elliot KD9XB, VOA Radiogram

Producer. We may learn something about monitors and SWL’s decoding

the net. If you are a monitor or SWL, we’d like to hear from you.

Remember: You can RELAY fill BLOCKS from FLAMP’s RX tab using the

FETCH and RELAY buttons. If FLAMP does not FETCH the needed BLOCKS,

you can type them into the RELAY window. Otherwise, it will send the

complete file.

:mg:973 Cyberthreats to critical infrastructure for power, water and wastewater utilities were the focus of a three-day Cyber

Physical Systems Summit.

“We focus a lot in sort of the perimeter in,” said Nick Santillo Jr., chief security officer at American Water, a public utility headquartered in New Jersey. “That’s sort of our defense base. But we have a lot of activity that happens at our perimeter. So we work closely with both the FBI and DHS around sort of who’s knocking on our front door.”

“It’s a dynamic threat environment. A dynamic playbook. That’s why you have an incident commander guy running things at Dominion, right? It’s an all hazards approach.

Band conditions were not great. In addition, the broadcast and other RF in the air from the commercial users of the mountain played with our reception a bit. Back down on the flatland, Anthony made several contacts for the NPOTA activation. Not what we were hoping for, but we had a good time and arrived home safely.

:mg:1676 Near Miss: The Solar Superstorm of 2012

In 2012, the Earth experienced a close call from an extreme solar storm, the most powerful in as much as 150 years.

In the journal “Space Weather,” Baker et al. describe the powerful Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) which tore through Earth orbit on July 23, 2012. Fortunately Earth wasn’t there. Instead, the storm plasma cloud hit NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO-A) spacecraft.

“In my view the July 2012 storm was in all respects at least as strong as the 1859 Carrington event” says Baker. The Carrington event caused fires in telegraph stations and destroyed the newly laid trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. “Northern lights” were seen as far south as Cuba. The glow awoke campers in the Rocky Mountains who began breakfast thinking it was morning.[1]

Fortunately, in 1859 civilization didn’t depend on electricity.

CME Induced currents can be high enough to permanently damage large utility transformers. Analysts believe that a direct hit by an extreme CME could cause widespread power blackouts which would be long lasting due to damage to long-lead replacement hardware.

The good news is that a CME is unlikely to affect electronic equipment directly. Transcevers, HTs, PCs, power supplies, pre-amps, antennas and related equipment are much less at risk, so long as you can unplug them in time. [2]

The often used phrase “When all else fails” may well apply to an extreme CME event.

kw6jim, did not cp Jim tonight, before I got back on freq. Running 45 watts tonight into the small inverted vee dipole, all solar power.

Bands are noisier than usual, think I might have some neighborly noise thing going on, Dinner was WONDERFUL! Spiced pork chops, breading, baked to purrrfection. Then decided to cut some fresh green beans and make my grandmas famous French fried Onion and bean dish. At the same time, I BBQ’s some wings with HOT buffalo sauce for lunch the rest of the week. Got the whole house heated up–fan is now running 100% pulling out all the hot air from the kitchen/oven!

8:15PM ah, the house is much cooler now, 66 degress and falling.

Have you ever tried to put a wild cat in a cat carrier before? It is truly inspiring how the legs can almost spread 90 degrees and halt the process!! With love and a really hard push, you too can get a cat in a box and visit your local veterinarian!

NOTE: Humboldt stations will be at ham meeting next week: 4OCT2016.

Happy birthday Jaye, Friday another year will have passed beneath my wings :)

Sure glad to have my computer back online with the new SSD hard drive. Can boot the beast and start playing in about 12 seconds, about 16 seconds from cold power up. Wow who knew this would be our CURRENT future :)

ALL ORCA Just a couple quick comments before we close… thanks for your patience with a long net… Jaye KE6SLS is our alternate NCS and we have a plan for nets that become large where Jaye takes a portion of the net off to another freq when we get to the traffic portion of the net. tonight we did OK with 14 checkins and it often happens that not everyone has traffic and some Ops will hold FLAMP when there’s already been some FLAMP traffic… another note, K6WSJ Steve is still having some medical issues and we want to keep him in our thougths and prayers.. And, his buddy Rick N6IET is recovering well and off to ARC meeting tonight, but will be back with us next week and. lastly tu to the ops who have changed their WFID to large font it’s much easier to read on the wf…
