Another big roster tonight, 22 check-ins. ORCA check-in has jumped lately.  25 last week; 22 tonight. It’s nice to have new Ops join us and satisfying to see how smoothly the veterans operate.  I think we’re meeting our commitment to conduct hands-on digital traffic training and practice.

Welcome first-time Ops, Chris KI7PTP in Tuscon,AZ, Dave KA6BIM in Coquille,OR, and Caleb KN4HHX in Logan,UT. Caleb is a freshman at USU.  He was licensed last November and passed his Extra exam three weeks ago. Good work!

Note to New Ops:  On ORCA, and elsewhere in the digital realm, don’t bother polishing your comments in the TX buffer b4 sending. Start the transmitter and start typing.  Time is important on ORCA and will be more so in emergencies.  Even if you have to type more slowly, you will be saving time.  It takes thought and practice, and it’s well worth the effort. Your QSO partners will thank you.

We enjoyed working with you tonight and look forward to seeing you again next Tuesday evening for another session.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 February 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex58.txt’, a digital
-traffic and file-manipulation exercise. Complete the instructions
and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or
send your own practice traffic or QRU.

Familiarity with your PC file system is important for handling
digital radio traffic. You may be storing and forwarding messages,
or sending them on by other delivery systems. You may be composing
messages in FLMSG or the PC Editor. To send those messages, you
need to know where they’re stored. File management and typing are
essential skills for handling digital traffic.

MACRO Tip: The macro tag, , is handy for sending the content
of a file. I use it to send the Announcements. The macro locates
my file in the file-system and transmits the content. I overwrite
the file every week. Because the file-name never changes, I can
change the content regularly and the macro always points to the
same file.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

{125E:1}The father of quantum mechanics, Niels Bohr, often spoke of the
{125E:2}inspirational dream that led to his discovery of the structure o
{125E:3}f the atom.
The son of academic parents, Bohr got his doctorat
{125E:4}e in 1911 and gained notoriety for deciphering complex problems
{125E:5}in the world of physics that had left his colleagues stumped.

{125E:6}In time, he set upon understanding the structure of the atom, bu
{125E:7}t none of his configurations would fit. One night he went to sle
{125E:8}ep and began dreaming about atoms. He saw the nucleus of the ato
{125E:9}m, with electrons spinning around it, much as planets spin aroun
{125E:10}d their sun.

Immediately on awakening, Bohr felt the vision w
{125E:11}as accurate. But as a scientist he knew the importance of valida
{125E:12}ting his idea before announcing it to the world. He returned to
{125E:13}his lab and searched for evidence to support his theory.
It he
{125E:14}ld true – and Bohr’s vision of atomic structure turned out to be
{125E:15} one of the greatest breakthroughs of his day. Bohr was later aw
{125E:16}arded a Nobel Prize for Physics as a result of this leap in crea
{125E:17}tive thinking while asleep.
