ORCA DIGITAL NET Report, 26/Jan/16

Check-ins: 7
Stations:
WA6NBG Don Eureka, CA
K7IFG Ken Beavercreek,OR
W7ZAP Mindy Brookings,OR (xyl)

K6RGI Rob Greenbrae,CA
K6ETA Steve Petaluma,CA
K7KY NCS Doug Brookings,OR

Well, nice net tonight, at least from my perspective. I was a little slow on the kbd tonight, and made a couple errors with file transmission, but overall it went OK. Nice to have three BayArea stations drop in tonight. We lost Don WA6NBG near the end of the net. Maybe just the band. Lately, it’s been difficult to check into the Humboldt County HF phone net on Tuesday evening. Propagation has been sketchy on 80m this winter.

Oddly tonight, midway thru the net we had a very strong station right on 1500. Signals from some Ops printed thru the QRM, but some did not and we moved down to 1000wf. Soon after that, they disappeared. Although we occasionally have close by neighbors, they seldom interfere with us. We’ve coexisted with the RTTY net @ 2800wf for years with only one weird night when we did bother each other a little.

I muffed the ORCA b/w image I usually send for signal evaluation. Last week I revised the logo file smaller for faster sending and mislabeled the file, so the IMAGE macro failed.

A few days ago I was copying files from Ken K7IFG in MFSK-64L/FLAMP. At one point in the transmission there were two PSK-31 signals within the MFSK-64L envelope and the file still CONFIRMED. I was surprised; it didn’t miss a block.

The visiting Ops are Steve KB6HOH, Steve K6ETA, & Rob K6RGI. All seemed comfortable with the fldigi suite of apps and I hope they continue working with us. Our net conflicts with a local VHF net for them so we may see them a little after check-in. I almost got to try FLAMP’s RELAY feature tonight. Steve KB6HOH was not copying Ken K7IFG well and I was going to relay the file for him, but he had to go before I had a chance to try it. I did give it a go after the net and it worked perfectly. A very handy feature and I know we’ll be using it.

The website is back up after a miserable month of domain migration. Unfortunately, we may be moving again very soon. Arvixe, the host we chose, does not provide the tech-support they advertise and we’re probably going to move again in the next couple days. I don’t think the next move will interrupt the site as the last move did. At least, we’ll be much better at domain migration.

Remember: Ken K7IFG transmits radio bulletins in various digital modes on the net freq beginning 30min before the net, 1900p/0300z. Good for FLAMP practice and tuning up and checking the band before the net.

If you want off the ORCA email list or know someone who would like to receive the net reports, please let me know. Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight and I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening at 1930p/0330z.

.A strong atmospheric river event…akin to the Pineapple Express…is expected to result in heavy rain and snow levels above
9000 feet Thursday morning through Friday morning. 1 to 2 inches
of rain is possible during this time along and west of the Cascades…with 2 to 4 inches or more along the coast and into the
coastal ranges. Due to the near saturated soils and extensive snow
pack below 9000 feet…runoff and snowmelt may bring rapid rises to
area streams and rivers. While no main stem rivers are currently
forecast to flood…high water levels and flooding are possible…particularly in small streams and low lying areas.

Hello to Steve KB6HOH, Robert K6RGI, and Steven K6ETA and welcome to the ORCA net. Good signals from all stations tonight.

Prior to the net, I rec’d K7IFG’s (3) FLAMP bulletins.

Last night Doug and I tried to check into the Humboldt Emergency HF voice net, but the band went long & we no longer were able to hear Don WA6NBG
or anyone else. It was interesting to note the difference copying stations from Humbodlt a few minutes later using digital modes. We were able to
communicate far better than on voice. I appreciated the stark difference between the two modes in same band conditions. The digital modes are real
work horses, especially is poor conditions.

Thanks Doug and happy to join in. Both Steve HOH and Steve ETA and I are involved in the Marin Co. RACES net on Tues including the main repeater
net at 1930h, so I’m likely to miss the start of your net, but I do plan to come back. Your ops seem pretty knowledgeabl;e on the NBEMS stuff and we’re
working on getting that going here, both on HF and VHF and UHF simplex for emcomm. okutoBquiÍÆÁ ltnxee and looking forward to what we can learn
from you folks.
Keep up the good work, and see you next week I hope.
