We had yet another night of marginal band condx.  We needed relays to complete ck-in tonight, but the band did improve as the evening progressed. Thinking of relays and ck-in, we’ve been meaning to re-post the macro that relays ORCA ck-in. We always ask a strong station to relay a call for ck-in, but we hesitate to call new stations for this; they may not have the macro. Here it is:

————-

<TXRSID:off>
<RXRSID:on>
<MYCALL> Relaying Ck-In 4 ORCA DIGITAL NET
Not copying NCS? Check in here …  < <MYCALL>
<TX>
<RX>
—————-
Include the blank first line to separate your text from noise. With this macro, you can easily relay the ck-in call. This and other useful ORCA macros are available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

With five stations opting out of the FLAMP Exercise, we had only four stations for the Exercise. Two weeks ago, only two completed the Exercise; five opted out. We added the * ck-in option to enable ten veteran ORCA Ops to help us limit the Exercise to ten stations, not to minimize participation. The FLAMP Exercise is a powerful demonstration of digital traffic-handling routines, strategies, and tactics. More participating stations means more opportunities to learn different modes and fill by relay. Newer digital Ops are learning by observation and participation. We’re working in 3-5 applications during this Exercise; work that requires concentration and practice. We might all be surprised to learn how many Ops Monitor w/o checking in. The performance of veteran Operators in the FLAMP Exercise demonstrates how quickly and easily trained Ops can process digital traffic.

That said, the * option is yours; we deeply appreciate your ongoing participation and support. We send the developing Roster often so all can see how the net is developing.  Checking in later as the Roster grows, you can better judge the need for opting out. We would prefer >6 <10 Active stations in the FLAMP Exercise.  Without you, we would not be a digital-traffic Training net. Without you, Steve K6ETA may not have conceived and developed the Western Digital HF Net. Thanks again for all you do!

It was nice to hear from Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO at net-end. It’s a long haul from Smithville at solar minimum.  The Ops in central US could use a digital HF Training net of their own. We’re delighted to have them ck-in with us, but current condx don’t usually support Active participation.

Jaye KE6SLS is recording ORCA sessions at SDR websites. We plan to use the audio files for training purposes. We’ve been thinking about recording ORCA sessions to make tactical training audio files, but haven’t had time to pursue it.

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex171.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex171.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Every third ORCA session, Active stations conduct the Comment Round themselves or
a volunteer runs the Round as NCS. Next week, 02/Jun/20, will be a third session. You
can conduct Comments as a group or a volunteer can conduct Comments as NCS. We
can also work the Off-Freq-Relay Exercise; that needs two volunteers. Let us know if
you’d like to NCS Comments or work the Off-Freq-Relay routine. Both are opportunities
to expand your digital capabilities. These routines are not difficult; we’re working with
friends and colleagues.

This week, we realized how many ORCA Ops are putting their digital skills to work.
Steve K6ETA comes immediately to mind. Steve was familiar with digital networking
before joining ORCA. Coupling a large group of capable digital Operators with a need
for a digital HF Traffic net, he developed and operates the Western Digital HF Net. WDN
is a natural partner for ORCA DIGITAL NET. Larry N7NSD participated in a four station
Relay last week on WDN. He made three relays in multiple modes and was first to realize
we needed to again send the complete file because Brad WA7HHE had rebooted his system.

Bruce KB7VX joined ORCA just last year; last week he answered a call on PLZ Rolling
AmRRON Digital Net for volunteer ANCS. He’s now an AmRRON ANCS for net Relays.
Good work, Bruce! Relay stations need solid signals and reliable equipment. Bruce has
an affinity for antennas. Bruno KG7VVN calls a VHF digital Training net in Utah. With
the support of his Elmer, Brad WA7HHE, he’s learned Amateur digital operations very
quickly. There are many more ORCA Ops putting their skills to work regularly; these
few came quickly to mind.

Thanks for working ORCA regularly. Your participation creates a working example of
efficient digital net operations that helps new digital Ops come up to speed quickly.

Remember the American Red Cross/Amateur Exercise this Saturday, 30/May/20. It’s an
unusual ARC exercise in that they’re very interested in Amateur Support. UHF/VHF/HF
Phone and data modes are the focus. It’s a national exercise and ARC is enthused about
the strong response from the Amateur community. Due to the COVID-19 situation, it’s
a work-from-home operation. Please sign up and put your CALL on the Roster:
https://arcg.is/019KCP Click, ‘Open in Browser’ and complete the form. Contact
your local ARES Representative for scenario and instructions.

Please email Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

Hmmmm, NCS <k7ky> was breaking up late in the net check in. Hope that clears up quickly. I hear the band fading like crazy. Fingers crossed for a good net.

Yesterday I managed to cobble together the connector to control the new 2 me Ameritron AL80-A amp. Conducted some low “high” power tests using SDR’s in the USA. Takes very little drive to bring the amp up rapidly. Currently only have my 300 watt matchboxes, so I am being VERY careful with the power and watching the meters closely.

The amp will need some work, especially the TR relay contacts, but it seems to work well. So tonight is my first real test using the amp and driving it with about 10 watts. I welcome signal reports!

Spent two weeks now trying to get my D.I. insurance via ONLINE only. On the very last page, EDD says my claim will not be complete until I call them at a 1-800 phone number. Guess what? No one is there, have spent dozens of hours trying every robot phone thing. Today I actually tried the TTD method (for the def) and used FLdigi.
SECRET–TTD is tty and FLdigi was able to communicate after I modified the carrier spacing to 425 HZ. I sent many requests in the blind, using my CELL PHONE! Cell phones work VERY POORLY for digital. So the only thing I could do was send letters by mail. Our state government could do much better than this!

Today, I am recording from approximately 7pm through the preamble. Will send off to NCS after net.

Had good weather today, lots of sun after the marine layer burned off. Looks like we have MORE rain coming later this week. What an Odd winter and spring so far.

By the way, I want to thank Doug and Mindy for not only NCS on ORCA, but their amazing work bring us the NET REPORT each week! Some times, with those really weak stations, the net report is the only way I can find out what that station had to report. Thanks again you guys!

Wow, the guys in Arizona are having a hard time hearing NCS and this station. Listening to the AZ SDR now. Very interesting. Good work to the AZ stations!

Oh dear, I muted the mixer for the SDR, it also muted the radio mixer. I might just put the signalink back online!

Quick net tonight! Please stay well ya’ll.
