Although the band was noisy and not all stations were printing perfectly, condx improved as the net progressed and we actually did pretty well. I was concerned at first, having trouble printing some early ck-ins. Mindy chose MFSK-16 for the weekly FLAMP exercise and only one station needed a fill. The slow, but robust mode probably saved net time in the long run as less time was spent with repeated reports and fills. Again tonight, a third of the check-ins are in UT. Maybe something in UT air fosters enthusiasm for digital ops.

The Template exercise has diddled along for a few nets now. We didn’t introduce it very well and then muffed the last FLAMP exercise with our antenna switching foopah. Templates will be very helpful when there’s a lot of traffic between units. Templates make entering the repeating information much faster. Templates will make more sense as we progress with using them.

We’re also doing well with the optional exercises. The Ops that do them are becoming proficient at multitasking. Some complete the exercise in time to return their file within a few minutes. Nice work all around.

We’ve been thinking to occasionally run the net as an actual emergency digital net instead of our regular roundtable format. It would help put our practice into perspective. An actual traffic net would list traffic and send TX/RX stations off freq to pass traffic. A relay station might be assigned in difficult band condx. Maybe you’d like to guest-NCS a simulated digital traffic net? We’re open to suggestions.

We appreciate the Ops that check in&out when they don’t have time or inclination to participate. Checking-in supports the net and many continue monitoring net activities. It’s still a learning experience. Sometimes, monitoring stations email us the test image.

These test images tell the propagation story in CA & UT tonight.

A personal note: You may remember I was out of the NCS chair in March and early May recovering from an injury to my right hand. A small industrial tire I was inflating exploded in my hands, smashing my middle finger and a number of joints and tendons. The end of that finger is not recovering well. It’s so smashed, there’s insufficient blood flow to knit the splintered bone. My surgeon is going to amputate that portion on Aug 8th. Mindy will again be NCS for a few weeks. I should heal more quickly this time as the remaining portion of my finger has normal blood flow. Returning to typing may be a bit more difficult this time as my finger will be only 2/3 length. Looks like even more trouble with 8,i,k, & , keys )-:

Thanks for working with us tonight. CU again next week. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 25 July 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex33.txt’, an

FLMSG/FLAMP exercise using an ICS-213 form and the Template

we distributed the last two weeks, ‘ORCAtemplate.213T’.

You need this Template in place to complete today’s optional exercise.

After opening FLMSG ICS-213 form, LOAD this template from the ICS-213

‘Template’ menu. Complete the exercise instructions and send the file

to NCS during TRAFFIC using FLAMP, or send your own practice traffic,

or QRU.

The FLAMP exercises provide experience working within the file system

while engaged in net activities. We’ve been running this exercise for

6mos now and those working the exercise are doing very well with the

additional tasks. Some Ops complete the exercise in a few minutes. We

have quite a team of digitally savvy Operators practicing with us every

week. Your participation is an important component of the learning

environment we all enjoy.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

:sb:56 Hawaii to Start Preparedness Campaign for Nuclear Attack

:mg:617 Hawaii is rolling out a preparedness plan in the unlikely event that North Korea launches an intercontinental ballistic missile at the Aloha State.

The public education campaign will emphasize steps to be taken on short notice, according to state officials, because a North Korean ICBM would arrive in just 20 minutes, leaving just 12 to 15 minutes to warn the populace.

The plan doesn’t mean a return to “duck and cover” from the 1950s. “get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned” is the new plan.

WA7HHE & K6QOG < K7KY here’s the location for Template files…

WIN: /owner/nbems/ics/tempates & Linux: /owner/nbems.files/ics/templates

when u open an ICS-213 Template menu it will take you to that folder… likely you will only have this file there unless you’ve added earlier templates.. these only show up in the 213 form, I think over < K7KY
