Tonight the net was small and the band favorable for digital signals. Although a smaller net than usual, those here represented about half the usual set of regular members. And, a very accomplished group at that. The net ran quick and smooth ; 46min. We like to keep the nets to an hour or less when we can. NCS is the busiest station on the net. Most Ops have long periods of inactivity and we try to minimize the boredom factor by keeping the net moving along briskly. When we’re really busy or hindered by poor band condx, you can help me by holding your practice traffic ’till next week and sending QRU.

Tonight’s file manipulation exercise was delivered by Mindy W7ZAP in the weekly FLAMP exercise. File ‘ex5.txt’ contains the exercise instructions for creating, naming, saving, and sending a FLMSG file in FLAMP. Returning this file tonight in the Traffic round was optional and two stations did complete the exercise on-the-fly by send their file during Traffic. Another station also completed the exercise before net-end, but was asked to hold it for next net. Completing the exercise during the net was optional. Next week is OK too. All these exercises are optional. You can send other practice traffic or QRU as you like.

Note: The ‘TO:’ window on the FLAMP TX tab defaults to ‘QST’. You should change this to the RX station after listing a file to TX. If you enter this info before loading the file it will return to ‘QST’. Tonight, Mindy sent her exercise file, ‘W7ZAP_ex5.213’ using the same TO: ‘ORCA DIGITAL NET’ she used for the weekly FLAMP exercise, although she was not sending a file to the entire net, but sending the new file to NCS. When Jaye KE6SLS joined the net late, he thought this file was the exercise file sent to the whole net because it was addressed to ‘ORCA DIGITAL NET’. Actually, it was Mindy’s homework sent to NCS. I compounded the error when I didn’t realize that Jaye thought it was the exercise file because of it’s addressing, ‘ORCA DIGITAL NET de W7ZAP’. I sent him the PREAMBLE to Mindy’s homework which he didn’t need.

On the TX tab, you should enter the recipient after listing the file. Otherwise, the text will revert to ‘QST’ if there’s no file listed yet and you switch to the RX tab.

Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight. You’re a great group of Ops to work with. Thanks for coming. I hope to see you all again next week. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 22/nov/16

Today we begin another file manipulation exercise. You will

receive ex5.txt in the weekly FLAMP exercise, next. Follow

the instructions to create an ICS-213 format file and complete

two statements.

Find FLAMP files quickly from ‘File/Folders’ on the upper menu bar.

If you can complete the exercise immediately, this is today’s Traffic.

Send it to NCS in FLAMP. Sending it next week is OK too. As always,

these exercises are optional; you can send other traffic or images.

Thanks for staying focused during the net. Your timely interaction

keeps a complex net running smoothly. Don’t be concerned about

occasional lapses and errors. We all make a mistake now & then.
