ORCA ALERT!  Northern California is again experiencing hot and windy WX. PG&E will be turning off power in effected areas. Grid-down is anticipated in Sonoma Co. We can check 3.581 tonight at 0230z/1930p for Steve K6ETA’s report. Remember, this is the freq/time for the ID ERC Digital Net, Dave K7DV NCS. If Steve’s community goes dark, we’ll schedule a special session of ORCA each evening as needed.

28 check-ins tonight; it’s a new ck-in record. It really kept me busy. We exceeded our 1.5hr absolute limit by 5min. We prefer to wrap closer to an hour. Thanks for your focus and attention. I like to run the net solo now and then. Mindy checked in 27 stations the first time she called the net. Her very first net was solo. We’re all becoming better digital-net Operators.

ORCA Welcomes three new stations, Wes KG7QXE in Reno,NV, Jason AC7JW in Woods Cross,UT,and Joe K6JOA in Crescent City,CA. We recently met Joe at a Licensing Exam where he taught a Technician class of 24. He wasn’t pleased with a success rate of 23 (95.8%); he usually does better. Three of ORCA’s roots (Founders) are in Crescent City. We’ve known Joe on the air for years.  We should always have path to Joe, only 30mi South. Doug KA7FOO checked in by relay from Valley of the Fire NP,NV.  Doug’s been on the road for a couple months now. This from Brad WA7HHE in the Comment round:

“ORCA net < WA7HHE, Heart warming NBEMS story: Two of our occasional Cedar City check in stations out camping this last weekend (Valley of the Fire) when a porcupine vehicle stopped in front of their camp site eye-balling THEIR porcupine vehicle, low and behold it was ORCA net member KA7FOO from Reno. Just wanted to say hats off to Doug KA7FOO and his travels through Nevada teaching FLDGI classes. 73’s to the net < WA7HHE”.

Right on, Doug KA7FOO! This is becoming a member appreciation Report.  A couple weeks ago, Bruce KB7VX stopped by our house on his way home in Chehalis,WA. Bruce is a traveling Medical Specialist and well experienced with field antennas.  We seldom actually meet our radio friends in person. Bruce is a long time Amateur; he’s learning HF digital ops very quickly.  New ORCA members learn net routines by watching and emulating experienced Operators. We’ve developed an effective platform for learning and practicing digital traffic-handling. We’ve become a teaching and practice team.

Hats off to Greg KG7D for Elmering new digital Ops and introducing them to ORCA. We’ve not seen Diana KJ7GVY for awhile; it’s good to have her back. We think of all our regular members as Instructors; the new Ops are learning from them by on-net example and off-net Elmering. As NCS, we know how many of you regularly teach Ops in your community. Good on you.

Thanks for working with us tonight. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 22/Oct/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex142.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

N/CA is again experiencing hot windy wx and bracing for more electricity blackouts.
If ORCA members are effected, we’ll again hold a special session of ORCA to copy
their reports and provide support. If so, we’ll meet as b4: 3.581+1500, 0230z, daily.

Our net frequency is becoming a digital watering hole. There are numerous digital
nets on 3.581 and digital Ops are beginning to tune 3.581 for QSOs, practice, and
troubleshooting.

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

To get on/off the Net Report/Log publication list:

:mg:958 The new Quantum Computer able to break any encryption code??

Each quantum computation starts and ends with a string of ones and zeros — classical bits — at the top of this assembly. Those bits are then converted into pulses of microwaves and sent down through wires and pipes to a series of 50 small superconducting devices called “transmons” — the qubits — dangling at the bottom.

The microwave pulses transform the qubits, putting them into a state of uncertainty between one and zero. Subsequent microwave pulses manipulate them, adding or subtracting them from one another or putting pairs of them into a spooky condition called entanglement, in which what happens to one qubit affects measurements of the other.

At the end, the qubits interfere with one another, like waves on an ocean, producing an output string of ones and zeros

I’m working with local journalist on the suddenstink internet issue here. Should get interesting. I copied you and kg7d on FLamp tonight, the rest of the stations were good copy, but not 100% on FLamp. I didn’t see the initial image report. SRI, I decided to check in full on the Mendo net <phone net> tonight. All is online here now and I hope we escape the next round of power failures!

Tnx Doug, and Good Job Mindy, I was surprised to see her FLmsg pop up. Looking forward the the Net Report to see the REST OF THE STORY.

Thx Doug, Mindy and the ORCA Net!

Here in Sonoma we are once again bracing for outages, though this time they are not expected to be as extensive. The is currently a red alert, which is the first stage-gate for a planned outage. So we are monitoring the authorities and sytanding by in case of Sonoma ACS activation. If this occurs, ORCA will hear from me!

That’s it from Sonoma! < K6ETA

For sure, Steve…. If ur pwr goes off, let us know and we’ll stand by with you while it’s dark.. tnx 4 the report

The fence ties to the neighbors fence so I have most of a block of fence for counterpoise.

Deja vu all over again… breaking news.

The Sonoma County Operational Area EOC has been Activated pending the predicted utility power service interruption.

ACS Volunteers will be staffing the OPS Area EOC commencing at 1200 hours on Thursday October 24th for 24 hours until Friday October 25th at 1200 hours.

The ACS Volunteer Sign Up Application will be available with an on line link for volunteers to express their availability as in the past. As soon as the current requests have been finalized I will be sending out the link.

There will be two choices this time one for EOC coverage and the other for dispatch to field locations still to be determined. Congrats on the new check in record!

That JUST in < K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY Tnx, Steve… Mindy just gave me a beer too! I get abt one every year. Too bad they didn’t announce just a few minutes sooner while we still had the net here. I’ll add ur info to the Net Report email and we’ll call the net tomorrow evening at the usual time to see what’s up with you & Sonoma co btu < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

OK FB… this event is expected to be less of a risk than the last, HOWEVER if fires develope, it could get dicey. We will look at this as a fire watch with power outage complications. Not exactly an emergency, but certainlt a situation meriting vigilance!
< K6ETA

I agree and good practice 4 us… do you think we should call a net tomorrow evening or start on Thurs? If tomorrow, I’ll arrange with Dave K7DV @ I can’t remember then name of Dave’s net in ID, ERC ERC I’ll ask him for pass thru if we want to start tomorrow ev < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA
Let’s not make is a sked, but rather be prepared for nightly updates IF the situation deteriorates?

I like the idea of 2000 hours on this feq being a ‘watering hole’ (actually 1930 hours) in ANY emergent situation! I think the key is alerting stations to tune in here NIGHTLY during exigent situations… < K6ETA

WB7TZD < K7KY Great idea, Steve… checking in Oops! agn… K6ETA i like your idea to ck the freq @ 1930p/0230z when there’s reason. I’ll work this up and we can make it policy @ ORCA we hope you don’t have anything worse than no refrig and a bit of extra dark, but no fire.. btu < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA
RR and I wholeheartedly agree! I think what u and Mindy have started can become an organic net of interested and relay stations in ANY scenario (health and welfare, emcomm, news, briefings, round tables, etc…)

K7KY < K6ETA
Not sure why I froze… the IMPORTANT thing is to have a time and place to gather and the skills to do it! Thank you for BOTH! < K6ETA

RR Mindy & I have been talking about this very thing lately ORCA has morphed into more than a training and practice net. It’s a net of like minded and very competent digital Operators. We are more or less stand alone and capable of handling traffic for ourselves or others. I love working with this crew. OK we’ll see how it goes in ur county and town… my typing fingers are getting lame now… the net was intense from my seat… bte net
