Band condx were not as good as we thought before the net; the band seemed short, with lots of QSB.  We hope to return to our usual good connect with UT & ID. Still, we did very well with practice traffic.

More stations are completing the FLMSG/FLAMP exercise in time for the Traffic round. Jaye KE6SLS was really under the gun. First to ck-in tonight put him at the top of the roster with the least time to complete the exercise and submit the result. Numerous stations also completed and submitted the exercise tonight. Nice work. Although not technically difficult, it entails working through four or more stages to return the results. Excellent practice for handling peripheral tasks while engaged with the net. If you have any ideas for variations of the exercise, please let us know. We want the net to support operations common to NBEMS procedures.

Nice to have Erik KK6RKY back. He’s been off 80m while his tuner was repaired. Erik is among the core ORCA Ops that support the net. It’s these Operators that really makes the net comfortable and engaging for incoming stations. Calvin N7AY and Larry N7SND were also back tonight. We lost Larry during the FLAMP exercise. Maybe dropped by the band; it wasn’t favorable for UT & ID.

There is tremendous difference between ORCA today and ORCA four years ago. We pack a lot more practice into each net these days. Just this morning Mindy & I were talking about how the net and the Ops have evolved together. We reminded ourselves to allow more time between RX/TX. ORCA veterans know the routines well and usually respond quickly. We can get lulled into a fast pace and forget that not everyone has been doing this for years. Naturally, our response times vary. We don’t mean to rush anyone, but we can flow along with a fast pace and forget that some Ops are relatively new to ORCA. Our objective is a useful learning and practice net that develops broad digital skills.

Keep Brad WA7HHE in mind these days. There’s a forest fire within 15 miles of his home in Cedar City,UT. Only 4% contained at this time, it threatens Cedar City directly. We wish Brad and his neighbors the very best outcome.

The band has been tough on the UT stations lately.

RX: W1EEP UT

Thanks for practicing with us tonight. Come back next week if you can. We enjoy working with you.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 20 June 2017

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex29.txt’, an optional FLMSG

& FLAMP exercise using BLANK form. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS

during TRAFFIC, or send your own practice message, or QRU.

The 72hr Pathfinder Triton 32 exercise in Curry and Coos County,OR is

upon us, June 24-26; an unfortunate collision with ARRL Field Day. The

exercise simulates total destruction of the coastal highways, with electricity,

Internet, repeaters, etc, all down. Nat’l Guard from 6 states participating.

Amateur Operators will pass medical/logistic traffic from Casualty Collection

Points to the WWII airfield in N Curry Co using HF WINMOR P2P. Air Nat’l

Guard will land heavy-lift AC, and send helicopters to outlying cities. Only

the abandoned airfield can accommodate heavy AC. Should be very interesting.

:mg:917 Antenna Tuner is back from the Shop.

OR

Why I haven’t been on the net for a while.

On April 24th our power went out after flickering on then off several times. That night, after the power came back on the antenna tuner (MFJ-939) wasn’t working right. After some testing it I discovered that it wouldn’t function in “automatic” mode. Additionally, the SWR OK light wasn’t operating properly. Sometimes it would be off (high SWR) even if the SWR was fine. Basically, it was difficult to trust if the tuner was working or not. After resetting and troubleshooting per the MFJ manual, the problem persisted. The unit was packaged and returned to MFJ for warranty repair on April 26. It was returned on June 19. Since my antenna is resonant on 40 and 20 meters so I was able to use those

bands without the tuner but it is really nice to have access to all the bands.

PS I use RMSExpress which uses WINMOR

ORCA DIGITAL NET – Late/Visitor Check-in? < K7KY

We’re moving along very well in spite of the unfavorable band and a big net.. OK on to the Comment round and we begin @ the top with Jaye KE6SLS < K7KY

ORCA de ke6sls

FB Doug/Mindy. Here’s my comments, may god take pitty on my soul:

ARS ke6sls <Jaye> is running 30 watts tonight on a low, short dipole fed with balanced feeder. As usual, solar powered. after start of net, went to 50 watts.

ORCA started with considerable noise, like DC pulse noise.

One note, all rigs are slightly different. I locked on your wf signal at 1515hz, but I AM running AFC tonight to see how it works.

so far, I like the lack of TX ID for net.

Mindy, you surprised me by asking for my REPORT on ex29 first! SRI for delay!

Obviously, the world has learned that Eureka is being destressed by hell fire heat wave, 61 degrees today. It really took an emotional toll on me, but I will persist and recover!

Oh Interesting, since I was able to cp both Erik and Doug’s RELAY, flamp doesn’t think it’s a NEW message and ignors the text! I DIDN’T know it would!

okay, using AFC, weak signals cause fldigi to start drifting in an attempt to cp the weak signal, taking me off quite a bit. I think I’ll not use AFC so I can cp NCS.

Many stations called, but I only copied the following:

k7ky 11db, s9, p4, flmsg 100%,

w7zap 8db, s9, fla 100%

ka7foo -11db, s5, 50% cp, later 0% cp, then 3rd relay, he was copied, qro?

k6eta 0db, s7, 100% cp, later 9db, s9, 100% fla

kk6rky -6db, s7, fla RELAY 95%, but unable to cp msg about matchbox troubles.

w1eep -10db, s7, fla 30%

winmor, ardop? I don’t see these listed in FLDIGI modes :(

Listen for our Humboldt club during Field Day. We are using W6ZZK!

ORCA net is a serious PERK ME UP event I really look forward to. Even when I am dragging like tonight. Tnx you guys–ALL OF YOU.

happy Solstice, after today, we head into ever growing darkness!

73 ya’ll and have FUN!
