Wow! Big net tonight and a little long too. Thanks for your patience and focus. Although the band was noisy, we did well with MFSK-32 and FLAMP. We concluded the exercise begun last week with each station returning an edited file to NCS using FLAMP. The objective is to practice manipulating received files between fldigi and the OS apps to edit, rename, save, and resend the files. Some Ops are already familiar with this process and it’s new to others. We’re all learning new tasks and procedures.

Mindy W7ZAP flowed through the weekly FLAMP exercise, managing a couple glitches with ease and focus. Our net reflects the numerous tasks necessary to handling digital traffic. At first glance, some of these tasks may appear unrelated to handling digital traffic, but typing and file manipulation skills underlie the generation, editing, and distribution of digital traffic. Image handling also requires knowledge of the OS file system. Next week we’ll experiment with managing received digital images.

Welcome to Anthony KG6LHW in Blue Lake,CA. He’s fortunate to live close to Eureka,CA where it’s easy to find expert guidance with fldigi and digital traffic issues. Mid-net, Howard KB6NN was over to help Anthony sort out fldigi. Digital Ops in Eureka network on VHF/UHF to practice and resolve digital issues. I think this is also happening in Cedar City,UT. It’s a real plus to find assistance with digital HF issues on the local repeater.

Good to have Rick N6IET back with us. He’s been in the hospital and just had his staples removed today. Sounds like a tough appointment to me. Kudos to Ralph for his ongoing dialogue about configuring his Raspberry Pi2 for digital communications. He has all the relevant fldigi apps running now. A powerful station in a small and inexpensive package. And, thanks to Brad WA7HHD for the Rainbow Canyons ARC bulletin. Let me now when you have ARC/radio bulletins and I’ll put you at the top of Traffic rotation. I do this in case we run out of net time. Better we complete the Bulletins before practice traffic.

Thanks for your patience at check-in. It can be the busiest time each net and it’s easy to fall behind when 2 or 3 stations come at once. Although I can see wfID’s easily on the waterfall, I’m sometimes busy elsewhere and Mindy & I can both miss them. Not every ID prints clearly. It depends on condx, power, antenna, etc, and some are occasionally unreadable. Be sure to uncheck all left side boxes on the, ‘Config/ID/Video’ tab. These will constrict the size and scope of your ID.

I was totally surprised by the depth of Amateur Radio experience revealed in our practice files. The 11 exercise files I received reflect 312 years of Amateur Radio experience. Really! No wonder this complex digital net runs so well. It’s an amazing collection of skilled and committed Amateur Operators. And, the newer Ops are just as focused and committed as the elders. I’m delighted to work with you. Again, thanks for your enthusiastic participation. I hope to see you all next week when we’ll do something new and simple with images.

RCARC Club members provide communications for the annual 5K foot race down Cedar Canyon September 10th. Amateur Radio Communmications proved valuable to race organizers. Radio Operators helped to request missing H2O and tables at one of the Aid stations, also an Oxygen request for one of the runners.

Lead male and female runners were called into the ICP.

Club members enjoyed the Public Service Event.

Comments:

I had a little trouble following the procedure with Flamp but Ill catch on about the directorry and file storage.

80M Antenna:

I moved the South-East leg to a higher elevation in the oak tree. However, it still touches the tree in one spot being hung up on a snag. The SWR is excelent, but when it rains it may change.

Problems with Fldigi on the Raspberry Pi2:

Fldigi would start up a process and bring up the other autostart applications but Fldigi would not bring up the Xwindow screen display. I downloaded and recompiled two versions of Fldigi but on running

./configure,

make -j 4,

sudo make install,

I still could not get a Xwindow screen.

Not until I deleted .fldigi recursive was I able to complete make install and get either Fldigi to work.

Note: make -j 4 runs four threads on the Raspberry Pi2 four core CPU for a much faster compile. I am now running version Fldigi 3.23.13, but I also have fldigi-3.23.13-a06 available. I assume I chose the more stable version?

On auto start, I bring up flrig, flamp, flmsg, and jedit 5.0.1 to edit this file.

The RPi2 seems happy, no waterfall stalls on testing. I kept a spare min-SD card to fall back on and checkout my hardware. If I had to fall back on a prior version and OS I could at least get on the net with the backup memory card.

All signals tonight were 100% copy.,,
