The Earthquake in Humboldt County, California dominates our thoughts this evening. It’s quite a mess with widespread structural damage, many without power, some injured, and two fatalities. Humboldt Amateurs put their five linked repeaters to good use. Jaye KE6SLS reports his home, garage, and vehicle damaged. His garage is off it’s foundation.  The earthquake struck at 0234 in the morning. We felt it in Brookings,OR, 100mi North of Eureka.  Occurring at Christmas retards response and recovery efforts; with many people off work, Civic agencies are on holiday schedule and understaffed. We wish our Humboldt colleagues and their families, friends, and neighbors, the very best. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Tonight was an evening of enlightenment for all of us. We’ve blissfully used 500baud Modes on 80m for years without realizing we’re violating FCC regulations. Thanks to Emery KE7YX for the heads-up. It’s not seemly for a Training net to be out of compliance. Emery was exceptionally kind; he mentioned it obliquely, so we discovered it on our own, sort of.

Band condx were again difficult tonight. Sudden deep fading was the norm. Short skip continues to fade early in the net, making connections difficult for station near NCS. One way paths are also more prevalent lately. As the net progressed, we had marginal copy on some stations to our North. A one-way path to OR/WA stations isn’t unusual this time of year. Overall, we’re always glad to be a digital net. We have a handful of very robust and reliable Modes. We’ll be passing traffic accurately when Phone nets are really struggling or defeated.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Dave KI7VLV in Bothell,WA. We’ll ask Dave to explore our Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/  We suggest incoming Ops Ck-In QNX a few sessions to learn net Protocols and conventions. They can work the NBEMS Exercise silently and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

Next year, we’ll again practice passing traffic off-net-frequency. When we did this previously, two stations volunteered to demonstrate the procedure for the net. It’s easy to do and takes very little preparation. NCS sends Sender & Receiver to another freq where they pass a file, return to the net, and Report. We provide the traffic and all you need to know. If you’d like to help, email us: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

On a busy Emergency or Traffic net, tracking traffic correctly is essential. NCS must know who has traffic to pass, who can receive it, what traffic has passed and to who, and who holds traffic w/no receiver. Some nets designate a member to accept traffic to hold until a receiver is available. This may not sound like much, but it can be challenging while you’re running a busy net. A scribe is most helpful, but initially, you may be alone. Digital operations lend themselves to record keeping as it’s all in the RX buffer when you have time to log it. As for most operations, it requires learning and practice.

An excellent entry point for learning traffic logging is compiling a Roster. We’ve often suggested shadowing NCS during Ck-In. Compile your own Roster along w/NCS and check your work when NCS sends the Roster. This builds an experiential foundation for logging Traffic. While we can’t predict events, we can prepare for them. If we’re prepared, we’ll be calm, confident, and inspiring.

Please keep Western Digital Net in mind. Jaye KE6SLS and Don KJ7VGV are keeping the lights on, but Jaye has just suffered quite an Earthquake setback. His time will be even more limited. Don is now responsible for 3 weeks/month. WDN isn’t a difficult net to call. Both Jaye and Don have efficient WDN/NCS Macro sets they’re willing to share. You can be up to speed quickly. The net is populated primarily by ORCA Ops, your colleagues. You can count on their support.

Western Digital Net and ORCA DIGITAL NET need a Liaison station to collect formal traffic and pass it to an NTS/RRI Hub. These Hubs use Pactor and VARA modes. If you’d be interested in this role, contact us: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com  ORCA doesn’t seek formal traffic except in Emergency mode. WDN has very little to date. That may change in 2023. Let’s prepare and practice now, before we’re needed.

Thanks for emailing ORCA TEST images. They make the Net Report more useful.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

6.4 EARTHQUAKE in Humboldt County,CA 0234p this morning. Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka reports his home, garage, and vehicle damaged. Wide spread damage county wide. 11 people injured, 2 fatalities. 70 thousand homes without power. City of Del Rio is also without water. Their water system is wrecked. Jaye’s radio station is solar powered; a generator supports his freezer. Although Eureka is 100mi south of Brookings,OR, we communicate well on 2m. High-gain antennas provide solid communications in most condx. We’ll learn more from Jaye in the Comment Round. Hats-Off to our colleagues checking in on 3.581 to see what’s up and what’s needed.

Our NBEMS Exercise tonight features FLAMP’s Radiogram form. EMCOMM traffic-handlers may see an up-tick in H&W traffic in 2023. Let’s be ready. When we practice with Radiograms, we don’t properly complete address information. In the real world, the distribution system would not accept our practice traffic. Addresses must be complete with Name, street address, City, ST, ZIP, Phone#.

Last week we heard from one of our digital neighbors who hangs out @ 3.582+1500. 3.582 is nearly as active as 3.581.  He wrote about our use of MFSK-128 on 29/Nov/22. You may have forgotten this topic last year when we decided to stop practicing with MFSK-128 and THOR-100. At that time, we used these modes frequently and we emailed 3.582 Ops just before net with a heads-up. If you weren’t here then, you wouldn’t know. Although our VARA neighbors don’t seem concerned about QRM, we want to continue being good radio neighbors.

More digital-Mode info: § 97.305(c) 3, “The symbol rate must not exceed 300 bauds…” below 10m. 500 Baud is permitted on 10m, but below 10m it’s 300 Baud. Our PSK-500R transmissions are out of compliance. PSK Modes reveal Baud rate in their label: PSK-250R = 250b, PSK-500R = 500b. Our new ODFM modes are well within spec: OFDM-500F = 62.5b, OFDM-750F = 125b. An ARRL petition currently up for FCC approval proposes to eliminate Baud rate restrictions and revise the band plan. There’s strong Operator objection to some aspects of this petition; it’s been in review for years w/o resolution.

Meantime, in respect for our digital neighbors, we’ll set an example for our VARA neighbors and avoid extra-wide modes. When condx are favorable, we have good results with the PSK-R modes.  MFSK-64 @ 240wpm/1260hz moves traffic quickly in marginal condx. THOR-50×1 @ 175wpm/900hz also does well in marginal condx. Even in really tough condx, we can usually CONFIRM traffic in MFSK-32/22, or THOR-22/16. In the worst of times, we’ll pass traffic in OLIVIA; it’s really slow, but very robust.

“The PSKxxxR, or robust, modes use both forward error correction and interleaving to achieve about 4 dB s/n improvement over standard PSK… In general the narrow-band BPSK modes work well on a quiet single-hop path, but give poor performance in most other conditions.”   FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.20 Ch33.1 pp362.

ORCA DIGITAL NET and Western Digital Net are looking for an NTS/RRI Liaison. A Traffic Liaison moves traffic between nets or in this case, from net to am NTS/RRI Hub. These Hubs use ARDOP & VARA modes. The Liaison station checks in regularly, receives traffic when present, and forwards traffic to a Hub. Currently, it would be learning and practice. WDN has very little formal traffic and ORCA only has formal traffic in Emergency mode. H&W traffic is on our horizon. If you would consider filling this role, contact NCS: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < K7KY

Tonight’s exercise begins in PSK-250R (220wpm,250hz,80%,FEC) . We’ll fill
in THOR-50×1 (176wpm,900hz,FEC) & MFSK-32 (120wpm, 630hz, FEC) .

The COMMENT ROUND is next.
Don KJ7VGV is up first < NCS

Weather appears to be getting warmer here, still snow on the ground. Doug K7KY gave me an update when I was trying to reach Jaye KE6SLS on the WF earlier today that Jaye was okay. I hope all the other ham operators are safe and well as well.
I will be NCS for WDN this Thursday, please join us. Big changes Steve K6ETA will be off air for about a year. So Jaye KE6SLS and myself will be doing NCS to keep WDN on air for now. Anyone interested in helping let us know. I have full instructions on how to run WDN.
I did not copy any Ops 100% on FLAMP tonight.

ORCA DN DE A.R.S. KE6SLS, Jaye in Eureka! CA using 50w on the doublet.
No signal reports tonight.  Too frazzled. This morning, around 2:30AM ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE! We suffered a 6.4 Earth quake, not far from my QTH.  Entire county plunged into darkness.

I ended up with damage in my home, my garage, and to my car parked in my garage.  All will have to be remedied in due time.

I was able to make contact on HF phone later, nea5day break, and asked for reports.  We had little news here for quite some time except for random reports from hams on our linked repeater system.

We lost internet and many/most lost cell phone coverage.  Was able to use WL2K to send short msg to my family.

Most of Humboldt is still without power.  We had a cascading grid failure.  That is, some parts of Humboldt still had power shortly after the quake hit.  I rcvd a call from friend in Hydesville, as she was talking, she cut out.  She has fake phone through internet and both power and internet failed which cut off our QSO.

Many frightened & exhausted ppl here now.  I hope much of the county’s power will return before too long as it will be a cold night for many without power/water.

We have several road closures.  Especially hard hit is Ferndale, CA, where the road leading up to Fernbridge has failed.

The towns of Rio Del & Scotia were extremely hard hit.  These towns are about 25 minutes south of Eureka! Ca.  Many homeless families as I transmit this message tonight.  There homes are unsafe to return to.

Fortuna, Ca, also hit very hard.  Many roofs damaged as chimneys collapsed.  Windows blown out, foundations compromised.

My garage broke free of it’s foundation.  I had to nearly rip my gate open which is located between my garage and my house.  After sunrise, I was able to determine where my garage used to be and where it is now.

Our hams and surrounding hams did an outstanding job by providing us with helpful information and helping us in the frying pan by calming some of our nerves.

This ham has a growing laundry list of things that MUST be corr t=Z pt home to further prepare for next event.

Did anyone ever hear the phrase “it’s not IF, it is WHEN” . . . This was ouretmt again. 🙁

Grateful again to our casinos for keeping their stores open and gas pumps working.  Line for fuel was over 2 miles long.  Again, we are so grateful for our local tribes–they have our backs!

This ham has less than 1 hour oaqXeyi  the last 40 hours.  I fottuhausted yet not able to attempt to close my eyes.

My cats are just now starting to calm down.

I again provided power to myself as well as my neighbor.  She said she would share the costs.

I will again mention that we lost cell phonesr injrnet.  I am nx  ·Qe pnt training which has so far helped me/us deal with this disaster as it unfolds.

My fingers are crossed we don’t have a repeat of 1992, where we had THREE quakes, 7.0 which devastated our county.

Carroll, W7WXV was smart enough to blindly send me a weather forecast! That was one of the smarted moves I could ask for.  Without internet, it becomes very difficult to know what type of wx is heading our way. Thank you Carroll!

Also, thank you Mindy.  We have spotty 2m comms.  Mindy came up on ¹t eis frequency to see if she could assis£  afÏsing someone has your back is extremely comforting.  TU Mindy/Doug.

It will take some days to clear/clean up the many messes here. Reports nearby indicate many residents will be days/weeks cleaning up or getting their homes safe enough to reside.  What a hell of a mess and what a horrible time of year.

at 18:30PT my power was restored.  Shortly after that, I was able to access internet.  I haven’t chkd my email yet. .

I am exhausted. Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Odd reception tonight. Some stations decoded 100% during the FLAMP exercise and some didn’t. K7KY varied from -2db to 8db.

Doug’s opening comments in announcements were incredibly spot on and informative. I learned a lot reading those few paragraphs

I dialed up a WEFAX station earlier this afternoon, NMC at Pt. Reyes CA at 4.346 MHz (dial freq of 4.344.1) and WF at 1900.
After fooling with the Tilt and Align properties in the WEFAX mode, fldigi started decoding decent weather graphs. Fldigi is quite remarkable and I really appreciate the effort by Dave W1HKJ and his development crew.  All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

Woke up last night sensing I was feeling a very light earthquake. Looked at my watch & checked the USGS earthquake site when I woke up, surprised to see a M6.4 in Ferndale,CA. Connected with Jaye KE6SLS via 2m. QSY to local SW/OR 2m repeater, but poor cpy, so we came here (3.581) and Jaye informed me what his condx were and freqs to monitor.

Fortunately for Humboldt the cold (mid30F) WX the coast has had for the past week broke yesterday, but rain (40/50F) is here. Not ideal disaster WX when you have no pwr. News says they should expect another EQ next week… hopefully if it comes, it will be weaker  than last night’s quake.

Thanks to all for taking time to work with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors in Humboldt county and hope they have a speedy recovery. Humboldt Ops, please let us know if we can assist you in some way. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!!
