80m condx have been very difficult for Phone nets the last few days.   We anticipated tough condx tonight too, but they were a ‘walk in the park’ for digital modes.  This was obvious when all eight stations working the FLAMP Exercise CONFIRMED in only two passes, a first for the FLAMP Exercise.  Five stations CONFIRMED the file in THOR-100; the last three CONFIRMED THOR-50×1.  We didn’t need a third pass in MFSK-32, our usual backstop mode. Gene W1EEP decided to monitor and leave room in the Exercise for others.  Still he CONFIRMED the traffic on the first pass in THOR-100.

In Cartersville,GA, Allan KJ4LPI was cruising 80m digital when he copied some of our ck-in.  Looking up my callsign, he found the ORCA DIGITAL NET website and emailed us.  Georgia is a long haul for ORCA in current band condx; I hope the band lets him participate.

I used to think VidID and RsID were more easily copied than signals containing data.  It may be true in perfect band conditions, but I’m beginning to think the narrow signal is more susceptible to multi-path and other anomalies.  Dave K7DV changed modes for his traffic, but neither of our stations followed the change.  The single RsID was probably scrambled by band condx; to offset this condition, we send TxID 2-4 times during the FLAMP Exercise.

Thanks for your assistance during check-in.  We appreciate you leaving a bit of time for us to reply and build the roster.  When ck-ins come at once, it’s easy to fall behind.  Thanks to you, our complex net usually runs very smoothly.  It’s a pleasure to work with each of you.  Thanks for being here; we hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 19/Nov/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex146.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We’re making a video for taking digital-net check-in. You’ll see the routine from
our perspective and be able to shadow NCS at check-in. When NCS sends the roster,
you can check your work. The first phase of practice will be virtual. Then you can
practice live on an ORCA support net.

Bruce KB7VX recently bought VARA for Winlink and he’s stuck at the trial-version
speed. His $69 version should be much faster. If you can help, tell us at the
Comment round; chat with him after net. If you’re Monitoring, you can email Bruce:
kb7vx@winlink.org

Don’t forget to send us your text images when you have time. They make the Net Reports
more useful and interesting.

If you usually check in&out or monitor w/o checking in, please send your reception
report, comments, and Test images with Call/Name/Location to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

DE §Exnt the local Srie;© the last power outage, half of an entire ice cream aisle still remains empty as of last Sunday. I usually drive behind the Safeway on my way

to the laundromat and since Sunday, there is a HUGE shiny green generator on a spanking new trailer sitting back there. It is almost as large as the big ONAN generator

here at the hospital. One of the clerks told me that Safeway is renting it. It is sitting idle, quietly behind the store out of public view. Apparently Safeway knows

that we here in California are facing more and more power outages, and they lost a LOT of business during the last outages, not to mention spoiled food and melted ice

cream; and they are taking action to prevent that from happening again.

I am glad I have three 100 watt solar panels on the top of my camper. During the last outages I had no problems, using propane for heat and the sun for electricity.

And I am going to need it again, as we are expecting another outage tomorrow and Thursday, just in time for the big labor strike in half a dozen hospitals here in

northern CA, including the one where I am working now. Lots of wind here tonight, the camper is rocking.

FB Bruce sound like you’ve really refined your camper setup. sri to hr more blackouts for CA we’d best be ready to support our colleagues in CA BREAK KA7FOO
