A few years ago, we seldom gave the band much thought.  Propagation was generally good. These days, we pay close attention to band condx. Distant stations had difficulty early in the net. Propagation improved a little as the evening progressed. Now, we wait longer for darkness and better condx. Poor propagation gives more opportunities for relay practice, and also promotes doubling. Overall, we’re managing nicely w/o sunspots.

Welcome to new ORCA ck-in Jacob KG7CFN in Tacoma,WA. We have 32 ck-ins tonight, one short of our record. Speaking of records, SATERN Int’l Digital Net reached a record last Saturday, checking in 50 stations.  Remember SATERN on Saturday morning, 14.065, Ken AD5XJ/NCS. He sends a SATERN Training Bulletin in FLAMP and fills <5 blocks. He also sends images in MFSK-128. It’s good net for NBEMS practice and an opportunity to work daytime digital on 20m. Early ck-in begins at 1500z; net begins at 1900z. We have a number of members in common with SATERN. SATERN is the Grandaddy of US Amateur digital nets, probably ten years old now.

Are you planning to support the American Red Cross Communications Exercise on 30May20? The ARC is evaluating digital communications by Amateur Radio Operators. This nationwide Exercise involves the VHF/HF bands and Winlink. No FLDIGI operations in this Exercise. We’re working with ARC California and Oregon. CA ARC is using their FLMSG ARC Custom ICS-213 form, while OR ARC is using the Winlink form, ARC 6409. We’ve sent both forms to their respective addresses and received acknowledgements. We’re good to go.

Let’s take a moment to examine two differences between ORCA DIGITAL NET and WESTERN DIGITAL NET regarding Relays and Ck-In protocols. WDN is a Traffic net and Relays are crucial to passing weak-signal traffic, especially in poor band condx. Traffic is WDN’s primary mission. ORCA is a Training net; Relays are also important, but for us, it’s Training and Practice. It’s not crucial that weak-signal stations work the net. Although we practice Relays, we don’t practice by Relay. If we did, nets would be way too long; interest and support would fade. On some nights, condx may prevent your participation. That’s radio.

WDN is a Traffic net and you can ck-in late during the net using WDN protocols. ORCA is a Training net; we run three distinct events each session. The FLAMP Exercise in particular is complex and brisk; we’ve no time to process late ck-ins. Everyone involved is focused and concentrating. It’s not the time to call NCS. We look for late ck-ins after the FLAMP Exercise, and the Traffic Round. Late stations are welcome; have a bit of patience and monitor while we wrap the FLAMP Exercise.

Remember the 2nd day of June; it’s the third session and your turn to conduct the Comment Round as a team, NCS the Comment Round yourself, or participate in an Off-Freq-Relay Exercise. We hope to have a volunteer to NCS the Comment Round and two Ops to work the Off-Freq-Relay routine.  Neither task is difficult. Some of you are already veterans. Both Exercises will prepare us for working WDN Relays and assisting Steve K6ETA as Guest WDN-NCS.

Thanks for your participation and patience tonight. We’re not intentionally brusk when we sort out distractions during nets. We don’t always have time and insight to say it more courteously. It’s important to read and follow net protocols.  They’re presented in the weekly Preamble and the ORCA website. ORCA Protocols outline what you can expect from the net and what the net expects from you. A number of  stations are still sending TxID during nets and Pre-Toning when NCS calls. Please disable Pre-Signal Tone. It not as effective as Pre-Toning with the Tune button thoughtfully. When NCS calls you directly, it’s redundant.  TxID should be disabled during nets unless you’re changing net mode.

Thanks for emailing the Signal Evaluation images.  They make the Net Report more useful.  It’s interesting to see the difference in reception at each station.  We always enjoy working with you, even when the band is difficult and things go astray. Let’s do it again next Tuesday.  Meantime, we’ll look for you on Thursday for Western Digital Net with Steve K6ETA/NCS. Oh, remember too the NA ID ERC Digital Net tonight with Dave K7DV/NCS, same freq as ORCA & WDN, but an hour earlier.  Ck-in and check them out.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 19/May/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex170.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex170.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

We now know just how important RELAYS are to traffic-handling. We spent a good portion
of one WDN session collecting a single QTC in very challenging band condx. Relays are
fundamental to Traffic nets. One NCS tactic for collecting traffic from a weak signal is
dispatching a strong station to catch the traffic off-net-frequency and Relay in. This
is the same tactic we’ve practiced as passing traffic Off-Net-Frequency. We’d like to
run this exercise more often; we’ll be working like this until the sunspots return.

Every third ORCA session, members conduct the Comment Round themselves or a volunteer
runs the Round as NCS. To each third session, we’ll add the Off-Freq-Relay Exercise. A
number of you have worked this Exercise already, some multiple times. It’s easy and very
good practice for traffic-handling dexterity. Let us know in the Comment Round or by email
if you’re interested in working the Off-Freq-Relay Exercise or NCS the Comment Round on
02June. Neither is difficult and we’ll help you prepare for an easy exercise among colleagues.

Please email Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

Preclinical- Testing of drug on non-human subjects

Phase 0- Pharmacokinetics; particularly, oral bioavailability and half-life of the drug. Very small subtherapeutic dose. ~10 people

Phase 1- Testing of drug on healthy volunteers for safety; involves testing multiple doses. often subtherapeutic, but with ascending doses.20–100 normal healthy volunteers.

Phase II- Testing of drug on patients to assess efficacy and side effects. 100-300 patients.

Phase III- Testing of drug on patients to assess efficacy, effectiveness and safety. Therapeutic dose. 300–3,000 patients

Phase IV- Post marketing surveillance – watching drug use in public. Therapeutic dose. Anyone seeking treatment from their physician.

Such tests assist pharmaceutical companies to decide whether a drug candidate has scientific merit for further development as an investigational new drug. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phases_of_clinical_research

Note: The first Trial out of the shoot only gets credit for success Until there is “independent” factual collorbation.

As of 2010, about 50% of drug candidates either fail during the Phase III trial or are rejected by the national regulatory agency

My friend Carl km6liq came over today and pulled two new AC lines into the shack. One is 120v other is 240 for an HF amp soon to arrive. After all that, he mowed the yards and the place is looking a little less like a wild field!

My old ts-570 lost it’s audio output. Have had it for a couple of decades and it’s been a real work horse. Now have a ts-590 and am very happy with it. Amazing audio, especially on those really noisy nights! Kind of nice having a new rig–now I’m a 21st century ham! :)

Humboldt has really received the rain this month. As C ,l was finishing the lawn, it started raining again!

Humboldt county is now 86 COVID-19 hot, 2 deaths as of today, and we had around 20 in last week. Very scary.

was thinking we were in traffic still! Okay, here’s my comments!

73 all, please stay safe.

We’ve had a surprising number of doubles tonite. There are specific times during every session to ck-in late. When condx are poor and you don’t hear a signal, transmitting will likely double net operations. Ck-in late when we call for late ck-in. tu

FLAMP Exercise: To output a Plain Text RadioGram file in FLMSG, go to FILE/View/Plain Text on the top menu. FLMSG will output a .txt file. Doug K7KY

Good points Doug, tnx! Good FLAMP question tonight, tnx for the answer!

Great net tonight and I’m very glad to see all the ORCA ops out here!

I’m having one of the FDA-approved COVID Antigen tests done on me this Friday. Will be interested in whether the fever I had on New Year’s Eve was what I thought it was!

I know a local guy who was only sick in November with a 6 day fever who tested positive for anti-bodies — also using the good, reliable test. As more of us are tested it’s becoming clear that the virus was already here in the North Bay last fall!
< K6ETA

That is amazing that I copied you. You’ll have to ck out the net log tomorrow to see how much was copied :-)

W7ZAP de KB7VX

I made a trip to Weiser ID for a job interview 1000 miles round trip. Almost no one in ID wearing masks. Almost no one east of Pendleton wearing masks. I noticed in OR that gas stations are no longer requiring that they pump fuel for custoer == now all self serve. Thank COVID for low gas prices and self serve in OR
W7ZAP de KB7VX

KB7VX < W7ZAP That’s too bad no one wearing masks, they may regret that. Havent forund a self serve stn in Brookings! I like them pumping the gas for me! Good signal Bruce

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
