K7KY Doug Brookings,OR NCS

Band condx must be much better than usual tonight, othewise members would have asked to have the Roster resent. While sending the Roster, Mindy W7ZAP discovered her radio was at 5w. Yes, QRP! Remarkably, no one needed a re-send. This happened a few years back when Doug K7KY made the same 5w mistake even longer w/o notice. It indicates good antennas at both ends.

Mindy is teaching Doug to update the main-page member-map and create the weekly Roster map. Wow, it’s a daunting and time consuming task. The weekly map is regenerated from the previous week in a WordPress map application. It’s not intuitive at all; it takes a lot of time, delete, and copy/paste operations. WordPress, Yuck!

We’ve changed how/when use the Path Evaluation Macro to reduce our Net Report workload. Instead of asking one member to send the TESTimage in the Comment Round and publishing those results along with the NCS beginning/end of net images, we’ll ask one station to send the beginning/end of net images instead of NCS. Useful data results will be the same. Occasionally, we’ll ask one member to send the beginning/end image instead of NCS. This eliminates the need to create two image-comparison presentations for the Net Report. We’re trying to keep ORCA tasks within our capabilities.

TxID, again. ORCA Prtocol is, members ALWAYS have TxID OFF unless they’re changing mode for Traffic or Comments. NCS ALWAYS has TxID ON. It may help to think about TxID as a focal-point for learning to enable/disable software devices during digital operations. Think of TxID as we do the attenunator. We turn it on/off according to immediate need. With Protocol and common-sense in mind, we check TxID before every transmission. Soon, it becomes 2nd nature to check the TxID icon. Once established, the TxID-check routine can be easily extended to other configurable features. Check your transmissions in the Net Report Log, there should be no TxID string before your TX unless you’ve changed mode. If this doesn’t apply to you, ignore it (-:

Note two things about the ORCA Ck-In Relay Macro. 1st, it no longer contains QNX. NCS determines Ck-In status after Relay. 2nd, the Macro enables TxID for transmission and disables TxID when finished. TxID is important when Relaying Call-4-Ck-In. Please update your Ck-In Relay Macro.

Don’t confuse the Ck-In Relay Macro w/the Relay Macro. The Ck-In Realy Macro only Relays NCS’s call for Ck-In. The Relay Macro Relays unacknowledged stations calling NCS.

Next session, 26/Oct/22, we’ll use our Relay Macro in the Comment Round. Here’s the Macro:
———– RELAY @>> (name)

NCS < <MYCALL> RELAY: <TX><TXRSID:off><GOFREQ:1500>
———–
Two leading blank lines seperate ur text from previous text & noise.
1) Copy(Ctl/C) Relay text
2) Tap Relay Button
3) Paste(Ctl/V) Relay text > TX buffer
4)Tap MYCALL/RX Button

If you have this Macro working, scroll up and copy any stations’ Ck-In string. In the Comment Round, send this Macro before your comments. Comments/Questions: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Unless announced otherwise, every weekly session will have an NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. Monitors can work the Exercises silently and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

We’ve updated the website. Please scan it for typos, errors, and ommissions. We edited every page except FAQ. Incoming Ops should read ‘Quick-Start’ twice. It contains everything you need to learn ORCA Protocols and Conventions quickly. Adhering to Protocols keeps ORCA sessions brisk and efficient. We pack a lot of networking and traffic-handling practice into an hour. Thepace of operations simulates a busy Emergency Net.

Macros: We’ve added our Macro Development & Debugging screen to the website: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/develop-debug/
It enables you to see Macro text, and most Macro functions at a glance in real time. If you can improve on this layout, we’d like to know.

Consider posting Macro questions, observations, useful Macros, etc, to the NBEMS Forum under #macros @  http://NBEMS@groups.io
Discussing FLDIGI Macro development and usage at the NBEMS Forum has numerous benefits. We’ll share our work with 1883 NBEMS Forum members and Forum Moderators. There’s likely to be significant interest in Macros in the NBEMS Forum. Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI Developer, is the main Moderator; we couldn’t have better oversight. Your NBEMS@groupa.io account can be set to notify you when there’s a #macros post.

Last week, we posted this Relay Macro:
———– RELAY @>> (name)

NCS < W7ZAP RELAY:

Two leading blank lines seperate ur text from previous RX text & noise.
1) Copy(Ctl/C) Relay text
2) Tap Relay Button
3) Paste(Ctl/V) Relay text > TX buffer
4)Tap MYCALL/RX Button
Steps#1-4 must be executed in order.

Next session, 25/Oct/22, we’ll do two things with Macros. 1st, we’ll ask Don KJ7VGV to send his Path Evaluation Macro at net beginning & end as NCS usually does. We’ll see how the net copies a member station. 2nd, we’ll use the Relay Macro in the Comment Round. If you’ve configured the Relay Macro, scroll up in the RX buffer and copy anyone’s Ck-In string. Before your comments, send your Relay Macro. This Macro works for a single CALLSIGN or lengthy comments.

ORCA < WA7HHE, enjoying some beautiful fall wx at this QTH, cut down a 30 ft dead aspen tree and stacked for firewood. Good print on W1QC in WI, station K7KY was working before net. K7KY s/n +15 db. Just a thought, if interest for a ORCA exercise on down the road might be to have each active station prepare a Damage Assessment Report and send to NCS when requested. When we do it for our Great Utah Shakeout we also include a small labled picture along with the DAR. Triage Colors for the injured could also be included with the CERT DAR.  Just a thought, wish all a pleasent evening. Brad

Finally picked most crops:  25 # tomatoes (most green, will ripped in the next couple of weeks), cantaloupe, honeydew melons, pumpkins, leeks and broccoli. Still have carrots in the ground, they get really sweet when hit by frost. It’s been freezing every nite and hot during the day (26-80F). Logged a chord or so of firewood and will go for another chord in the next few weeks. XYL tried to split wood today but log splitter pull cord broke, will fix soon!! Wood stove on every nite for a few hours now to keep the house from gettin’ chilly in the morning then heating the house with the greenhouse during the day. In a few weeks will have to heat the greenhouse with the house wood stove. Works pretty well and we get fresh cabbage, lettuce, cilantro and other cold weather crops thru the winter.  Band finally back and here to stay….maybe, I hope

Not only did we have a “hot mic” tonight.  I was also hearing lots of “bonk” sound effects during traffic round.  This is where a real radio/computer interface put into service pays for itself in quality and eliminates that kind of interference.
Blue skies and sunshine here today, DESPITE the official weather forecast!  My battery needed the juice after all the work I did on Monday’s emergency nets followed by the Western Country Cousin’s net! Absolutely wonderful band condx tonight!
This thursday is the Great California Shake Out exercise.  We are still hoping to find HF operators in Del Norte & Siskiyou counties willing to participate as they are all sister counties to Humboldt county where I am.  The date is 20oct2022 at 10:20am.
https://forms.gle/frk46CHjGTHADa4i8
When tonight’s net began, I was busy checking into the Del Norte VHF emergency net and passing this traffic–still hoping to find a DN ham willing to give it a go! 10 meters!  What can I say.  IT IS OPEN.  Look for cw signals between 28.200-28.300.  Those are 24/7 beacons.  If you hear them (around 9am now) you KNOW 10m is your oyster!  28.120 PSK31, 28.078 JS8, 28.300- 28.600 SSB DX Mindy, the recipe was RCVD, processed & thoroughly ENJOYED! TU So glad I live in a NO SNOW ZONE Great to see all of you on the WF tonight.
Stay well, practice often, and hope to see you down the wf soon!

Mindy did ck-in & a bit more tonight w/only 5w!  Good ears on this net too!
Nice work in the NBEMS Exercise by all participants. You guys will be appreciated assets on any digital net. Everyone knew that Pre-Toning prevents doubles. Two stations knew that Pre-Tone is superior to Pre-Signal Tone because Pre-Signal Tone send your content directly after the Tone, giving you no opportunity to Stop, Look, & Listen for signals b4 sending.
RR Brad   tnx 4 the NBEMS Exercise suggestion.
Ken KR7KR made an important point about Pre-Tone.  No need for Pre-Tone when NCS calls you directly. Everyone expects yourtransmission. Wow! Bruno has his own grocery store @ home. No wonder he’s busy around the homestead. Tonite, we had a quick meal and skipped our usual pre-net practice session.  All things considered, we did OK with a couple insignificant errors.  < Doug K7KY
