Band condx were really poor tonight; probably the worst we’ve experienced on ORCA. Overall we still did OK. Poor band condx impel us to try other modes and we do need this sort of experience. It can be very frustrating. Poor reception leads to doubles and lots of repeats.

We decided before net to use whatever mode the band would support for the weekly FLAMP exercise. We didn’t plan to announce mode changes. We wanted to gain experience with auto mode-tracking w/o TXid. Mindy did TX mode-ID, but it wasn’t parsed by many stations. My station changed to THOR-22 and copied the file correctly as did Howard’s KB6NN. The first stations Mindy polled for REPORTS did not copy the mode change, so she began again in MFSK-32. This worked better, but we still had difficulty filling the more distant stations. We didn’t really complete the FLAMP exercise tonight. We moved on with the remaining net activities and planned to fill the practice messages following net if anyone was interested.

Thanks for staying focused and engaged during one of our more difficult nets. As frustrating as difficult band condx can be, they are good practice for conditions we may encounter in emergencies. You did well with adverse conditions tonight. Our underlying skills increase with regular practice. Resolving unanticipated problems on-the-fly leads to greater depth in our troubleshooting capacities.

Had we been an emergency net tonight, we would have used a net structure that focused more on Station-to-Station contact and not attempted to print at every net station. We would have found the best RELAY for each situation and we would likely have taken less time to pass our traffic. Practicing on the net takes more time and energy, but provides the regular practice that will make us more likely to perform well in emergencies. My thinking, anyway.

Here’s how the band delivered my signal to Pine Valley,UT and Eureka,CA tonight.

RX: W1EEP UT RX: KB6NN CA

Our thanks to each check-in tonight. And, and additional Thank You to those who take time to engage Mindy & I on ORCA issues after the net and by email. We appreciate your interest and support. It’s what make ORCA a team activity.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex24.txt’, an optional

file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS

during TRAFFIC round, or send your own practice message, or QRU.

DIGITAL NET NOTES:

On most digital nets, NCS determines mode. When NCS sends you off

net-frequency to pass traffic, you and your receiver determine the

mode. It’s good to remember the differences between our net and an

emergency net. Here, we want our traffic to print for as many

members as possible, providing more opportunities for practice.

For emergency nets, only NCS and your receiver (and possibly a

relay station) are essential.

Here, unlike an Emergency net, you are welcome to TX on net-freq

in a mode you think the band will support. You don’t need NCS

permission. You are responsible for activating/deactivating TXid.

Before changing mode, consider how well you’re copying the other

members. While practicing digital traffic on ORCA, you are sending

to the entire net. In emergency situations you will be sending to

one station, NCS or your receiver.

Very tough band condx tonight, as the NOAA dashboard posts we’re having moderate geomagnetic activity (G2). Not sure why stations did not

okl roger will try next week hi de K7dv

K7DV This seems to be the worst band we’ve had since the beginning of ORCA I hope next week is better. Still, we did pretty well considering condx. we have a great group of digital Ops.. btu < K7KY

DE K7DV well I didnt have ur call there … ists the worst ive ever seen it too there is a very powerful storm over us here so it will

disapate 73’s and yes we could of past whatever we wanted because of relays if we really had to good job again and 73 de K7dv

K7DV UR Right, Dave we could have passed most of tonight’s traffic if we had to it would have taken much more time cu

next time 73 Doug K7KY sk

K7KY < K6ETA

Doug, dunno if you are still around. I think its good practice to announce a mode change and THEN let TXiD do its thing as well. Some

people get annoyed with the pop-ups and turn off their RXid… just a thougt. btu Doug K7KY < K6ETA

KB6NN

K6ETA Steve I hear u. Last week we ran the same and band condx was better. No one seemed to miss the mode changes

then. Part of the reason to turn TXid off was to save time and use the automated functions in fldigi. I don’t mind to announce mode

change, and maybe we should when the band is so poor, but it would seem to defeat the original purpose or running w/o TXid if we announce

changes each time… anyway, I’ll give it more thought thanks for the idea… BREAK HOward KB6NN u still hr? < K7KY

r

I think you did announce the mode change by asking if Doug wanted to try MFSK 16. Perhaps you should do somethinglike..

ALL ORCA — prepare for mode change – turn RXID on

or something l ike that. Maybe people got mixed up and turned off both tx and rx id… mine switched over but I was expecting the change aand wanted to see what would happen.. < KB6NN

KB6NN UR right, Howard… I offered to KA7FOO to change to MFSK-16, and then didn’t hear him, but he heard me and

began to TX in MFSK-16 then another stn came on top who couldn’t hear him… Quite a night tonight… anyway K6ETA KB6NN I

don’t mind to make a mode change announcement if it helps keep the net runnign smoothly… Our net is more complex than most digital

practice nets and I don’t want to make it too difficult so no one wants to practice… we’ll kick it around and give it a try… over to Steve

K6ETA < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

Some thoughts -if we split into two nets like we practiced before, auto RXid will not work. Also, other sigs do use this portion of the band and

ocassionally use txid which would hijack the whole net. So the pop up is what we used on the Calavaras Net. Also, some stations preferred

to TXid twice (a setting) so if the first one was cut by QSB or double, the mode would still change. Just my $.02

btu Doug K7KY < K6ETA

K6ETA RR Steve… I don’t plan to split the net as we once practiced.. it seem easier to limit the traffic on the

rare night we have too many active Ops with traffic. I can always ask some of the regulars to hold their traffic till nxt week. Sending

TXid twice doesn’t sound like a good idea for the time when the band is this bad. I use double TXid for QSO when calling CQ thinking it

gives someone a better opportunity to discover my mode. it would double the 2.8sec we use for txid now. anyway, these are good issues

to kick around and I appreciate your interest. U can see that not too many Ops actually engage me about net structure etc… Howard has

always been interested too over to Howard < K7KY

I forgot about hijacking… hmm.. Ok, as I remember, Doug you didn’t hear the Idaho station come back, so you moved on and called me. So

I was Johnny on the spot with my tx button this time and doubled. Anyway, what’s the pop up you all are talking about?

< KB6NN

KB6NN < K7KY fldigi can be configured to send a pop up when it senses mode change. I’ve always run w/o pop ups. I watch the little mode window at bottom rt… over to Steve < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

I did get hijacked more than a few times mostly during the solar peak when there was a lot more traffic… decided I would never again run

auto – but now the pop-us get overwhelming. Heh. Anyway, ORCA spends 95% of the time on MFSK32 so that’s why all these thoughts are

not mission critical. If we were hopping modes like fleas, we would definitely need TXiD on all the time…

btu Doug K7KY < K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY

K6ETA < K7KY OK Steve I hope when band condx are good we will sometimes be hopping modes like fleas for the

practice these discussions will put us in good order for those times…. I want to remain flexible and keep the net neat and useful for the members… over to Howard < K7KY

I’m looking for the pop ups

< KB6NN

anyone else have thoughts on this topic? ur welcome to jump in…. < K7KY

K6ETA Steve thanks for working this idea with me and

I’ll give it a lot of thought and we can continue talking and experimenting… 73 Doug K7KY < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

Sure thing! Your net is already pretty smooth, so these are just nuances. Howard, your signal is great tonight! And to see the pop up, go into Config/ID/RsID and look at the check boxes such as Notify Only…
