Hey! Big net tonight and reasonable 80m band conditions. We did well with MFSK-32. Mindy W7ZAP did use MFSK-16 to fill one block to Howard KB6NN for the weekly FLAMP exercise, but otherwise we ran the net on MFSK-32 w/o issue. Using MFSK-16 for the fill was a good choice when she was sending the fill herself instead of asking a strong station to relay. Howard had not decoded block #4 in MFSK-32, but would likely decode MFSK-16 from her station. Although we had 16 check-ins, 5 were monitors and we completed the net in an hour and a quarter.

We had a number of new and returning stations tonight. David KI6ZHD was back from Santa Clara,CA. Three first time Ops are Larry KL7GM in Seattle,WA, Bob N7RBP in Medford,OR, and Clifford N0LKC who was portable at a campground in UT @ 10w. They were all monitoring tonight. While editing noise from the log, I realized that Larry didn’t check ‘in&out’ and I may have logged him incorrectly. If so, my apology for excluding you from participation. I also didn’t log Bob W7GBB correctly. He checked-in QRU. Normally, I assume Ops are holding traffic for practice, so I’ve simplified check-in to callsign only for regular Ops. I never mind to hear QRU during Traffic round. It helps keep the net to a reasonable length. Tonight, I asked Dave K7DV to hold his practice traffic until next week.

In our early days, we were the ORCA EMERGENCY NET. We were hoping to attract digital Ops from our surrounding Counties. Eventually, we realized there was need for digital traffic training and our net would always be useful in emergencies. Although we dropped ‘Emergency’ from our name , we still hope to develop regular members in our neighboring counties. I was delighted to have Bob N7RBP check-in from Medford in Josephine County, OR, our neighboring county to the east. I hope he’ll become a regular.

Thanks to all for working with us tonight and remaining engaged and focused. Our on-air circumstances are quite different in terms of net activity. I’m busy throughout the net, while you have long periods of inactivity. It’s easy to become distracted by interesting things at your station, like TV, phone, and pets. I avoid distractions during the net and may still fall behind when we’re busy. Because you are usually well focused and engaged, we don’t waste much net time vying for your attention. Interruptions will happen for any net, don’t fret. ORCA runs very smoothly because of your skills, focus, and dedication. Thanks for all that each of you contribute to the net. Learning and practicing with you is a pleasure for Mindy & I.

ORCA Announcements 15/nov/16

Last week, our net fell on Election Day and the band was worse than usual.

Still, we had ten check-ins. It was difficult to maintain connections with

MFSK-32. We didn’t change mode and lost a number of Ops. Following the

net, we experimented with OLIVIA and MFSK-16. You are welcome to change

mode when sending traffic. Please consider overall band condx and the size

of your traffic. MFSK-16 is half as fast as MFSK-32. We try to return to MFSK-32

for net business, but we’ll stay with the mode that works for most stations.

If your NBEMS/EMCOM group has exercises you think would be useful

here on ORCA, please outline them for me. Our recent file manipulation

exercises are variations of an exercise conducted on the Idaho ERC Digital

Net, Tues/18:15p, 3.581 + 1500, NCS Bliss W7RUGB.

:mg:1011

Cyber threats represent a serious business risk to government

operations. Attacks have the potential to cripple vital

government services and damage public infrastructure.

. Hackers know that state and local governments often

lag behind commercial entities in cybersecurity readiness.

Consequently, the number of attackers probing your systems

for vulnerabilities is exploding—everyone from small-time

crooks equipped with black-market ransomware kits, to

nation states and organized crime syndicates armed with

sophisticated cyber weapons.

The threats are all over the map. Small towns and school

districts are hit with ransomware that shuts down computer

systems until they make a payment. Thieves steal citizen

dentities and financial information from state agency

databases. Water authorities endure surgical strikes that

use specialized computer code to destroy water pumps.
