80m was tough again tonight. Copy between here and Eureka,CA is still poor. I’ve not printed Jaye KE6SLS well in 5 or 6 weeks now. Gene W1EEP relayed for Jaye. During our roundtable style practice net, we log relayed stations ‘in&out’, as monitors. To relay each message or net function to relayed stations and relay their response back to net would make a very long net. Normal traffic handling procedures would have NCS send the TX & RX stations off net-freq and if needed, send a third station as relay.

Welcome to Steve N7XRD in Long Beach,WA. He’s in&out tonight. Keep Christine AF7OK in your thoughts and prayers. She’s struggling with a severe cold, but still doing a little radio. Dave K7DV in ID disappeared for awhile. No station problem; he was called to work, but returned in time for comments.

I made what seemed like a small error at check-in. I didn’t log Bob B7GBB in&out. W/o in&out on the roster, I wasted time more than once looking for Bob. So did Mindy. One error led to numerous unnecessary transmissions. Check-in time is the busiest time for me. Sometimes I’m three Ops behind cutting and pasting them into the roster. It easy to miss an Op or note like QRU or in&out. Just when I think I’ve got a routine mastered, I see I haven’t quite arrived.

Mindy W7ZAP did a good job with the weekly FLDIGI exercise. This exercise also requires concentration to stay ahead of net flow. Mistakes and errors in net routines are not necessarily negative. They give us the opportunity to resolve problems on-the-fly. Conducting the weekly FLAMP exercise is good practice for running the net, or portions of the net. Things easily go astray or run out-of-sequence. You have to resolve it quickly and get back on course. With a little practice among friends, it quickly becomes routine.

Everyone is doing well with the weekly FLAMP exercise. It takes focus and concentration to know your position in rotation and what’s coming to you next. We’re doing very well with FLAMP’s REPORT & RELAY features. We’ll be using them often in poor band condx.

RX: W1EEP/UT

Note: We missed a check-in around 1949p.  I think there was a double then.  KA6ULG didn’t print at my station, but I see this entry on Jaye’s log at 0349z: ‘K7KY KA6ULG NO  TRAFFIC   de   KA6ULG’.  Apparently no one else heard Bob; there were no relays.  Bob is very close to Jaye’s QTH. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Bob; sorry we missed him.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

W1EEP Thanks for your relay, Gene… We can’t relay every net function while we’re practicing traffic handling. the net would take hours…

if this were formal or emergency traffic, three Ops would work it on another freq until it was complete… It just doesn’t work well in the

roundtable practice net… BREAK

Announcements:

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex11.txt’, another optional

file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Using FLAMP, return your result to NCS

during Traffic Round, or send your own practice message or QRU.

Weekly FLAMP exercise:

We continue with Mindy W7ZAP (volunteer) taking roundtable REPORTS and

attempting to fill the file to everyone. Exercising with REPORT & RELAY

is important practice for poor band condx.

Traffic Round:

For FLAMP msgs in the Traffic round, Only NCS will REPORT. I may ask you

to RELAY if I can’t fill from sender. Then, on to the next station. No

more roundtable of FLAMP traffic REPORTS in Traffic round unless net is small.

This saves time for more practice.

Practice trumps msg content, but occasionally we want to complete a message. Stations wanting to fill an FLAMP msg can stay on freq after

closing. Before

closing, I’ll send an in-order list of Ops sending in FLAMP. Please call

them in the order listed to minimize doubles.

We tried this twice now and it worked OK. I listed their calls and asked

you to contact them in the order listed. There were no doubles. If there

are more than 2or3, I’ll list a WF freq by their call, ie: W1AW-800,

or W1AW-2200. Look for them there. It’s optional; they may be QRT.

Thank you for using pre-tone before TX. We’ve almost eliminated doubles.

Weekly Net Report posted as soon as I can…

Welcome to Steve N7XRD. The FLAMP exercise keeps me on my toes! Figuring out who can relay, who’s there… all good practice. Thanks

to K6ETA Steve for the relay tonight. Sorry to see Christine is under the WX… hope you’re feeling well very soon. Propagation between

Brookings, OR and Eureka, CA has been almost nil the past few weeks. Good opportunity to work on relays, they’re vital to amateur radio.

Nice to pracice it here and keep the flow of the net going too. Great to work with you all. Hope to see you all on the WF again soon.
