Not the best band condx tonight, but good enough for digital comms. The weekly FLAMP exercise was not so easy tonight. We missed a couple stations in the REPORT round. No way to know if they couldn’t hear us or had tech issues or distractions. Only one station needed a one block fill, so MFSK-32 was doing a creditable job. Later in the net, most stations would have copied MFSK-64 too.

Congratulations to Clifford N0LKC who has been monitoring ORCA this winter while traveling around the western US, campground portable with 10-40w. He jumped in tonight and did well. Doug KA7FOO has also been monitoring a few weeks and is about to go active, I think.

Regarding the suggestion we save time by deactivating TxID, we want to keep it active for the present time. Only one other Op was willing to try it. We realize it adds 2.8sec to each TX. Changing mode manually each time will also take time and increases the NCS workload. We’re already pretty busy. We can try running the net without NCS using TxID. NCS makes more than half the transmissions each net, so it will save half the time anyway. We’ll try it next week.

You don’t have to bring practice traffic to net. You can send the results of the practice exercise distributed in the weekly FLAMP exercise. You can also send QRU (no traffic) during Traffic round. Every active station participates in a complete message evolution during the FLAMP exercise, so you won’t miss traffic practice.

You can send QRU during Traffic and send a BLANK form message or keyboard live during the Comment round. Our overall objective is to provide numerous opportunities to practice digital traffic handling.

If you have any interest in learning digital NCS skills, it can be done most easily by conducting individual portions of the net. Mindy began by conducting the weekly FLAMP exercise. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t have time to conduct more net events before being thrust into NCS when I injured my hand. Still, her experience with the weekly exercise was enough introduction to give her the confidence to step into the breach. It also helped that our stations are so close and I can assist her if she falls behind.

TX: W7ZAP OR RX: W1EEP UT

If you ever think you’re not learning anything new here on the net, it might be true. Net format changes occasionally to incorporate new tasks and skills, but is pretty much the same week to week. You may already be accomplished at digital communications. Still, your continued participation has some big pluses.

Number one is the depth and confidence gained from regular practice. Practicing your digital skills with other Amateur Operators contributes to remaining balanced and focused when conditions are chaotic. These are the times you will be thankful you invested time in regular practice. And, your participation is part of the learning environment experienced by everyone else on the net. Your participation helps create the dynamic model newer Ops need for growth and inspiration. And, we definitely appreciate everyone who works with us each week. Thanks for sticking with ORCA. There would not be a net w/o you.

I hope to see you all again next week. 73 Doug K7KY

(OT) Steve WA7PTM is coordinating the SEA-PAC Raspberry Pi Workshop on Friday, June 2nd (seapac.org/workshops.html). The Elmer co-presenter with Randy K7AGE, has canceled and Steve is looking for another Op familiar with Raspberry Pi/FLDIGI to work with Randy at SEA-PAC. Contact Steve: seapac-2017@aberle.net.

ORCA ANNOUNCMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex19.txt’, an optional
file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS
during TRAFFIC round, or send your own practice message, or QRU.
This multitasking exercise provides practice in processing traffic
while maintaining focus on net operations.

This ARRL Western Pennsylvania Section webpage explores some pro and
con aspects of FLAMP & FLARQ:
www.arrl.org/files/file/On%20the%20Air/Tutorials/Advanced_NBEMS_3_0.pdf
Check it out.

Last weeks FLAMP exercise question produced the suggestion that we turn
off TXid during net. This would save 2.8sec of every TX in MFSK-23. It
would also require anyone changing mode to notify the net twice and
each Op to manually change modes twice for each msg. Overall, time
saved may be a wash. We’re unlikely track mode change manually as well
as fldigi does automatically. We can try it if you like. Please express
your thoughts during Comment round or email ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

FB Erik nice report. Have not heard of the ARRL test, but will look it up as it sounds interesting BREAK

W7ZAP < K7KY I think my issues with FLAMP may be due to using an Alpha version of fldigi v 4.0.2.6 this version fixes a bug in
the macro tag more info on that here…

:mg:630 I’ve been working with the FLDIGI programmers, Dave W1HKJ and Ed W3NR to resolve a bug in the macro tag, .
It now works reliably in Alpha version 4.0.2.6. is very useful when u create or edit macros on-the-fly.

Usually, u have to navigate to the top menu and click thru 4 menus to save the current macro file. With the macro tag u
can save the current file with 1 click w/o leaving the macro bar. Very hand when ur in a hurry.

I create or edit macros during the net nearly every net. Fixing this macro command is a big plus for me. If u use macros, you too
will appreciate the savings in time and bother.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
