80m was equal to it’s dire predictions tonight. I again had difficulty with close-in stations, and some difficulty with distant stations too. I could barely copy Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID. He’s usually solid copy. The band was generally weak and more long than short; it did improve as the net progressed. Lot’s on in&out’s tonight and ARC meetings in UT & CA.

Doug WB6VAC was back tonight and Aaron KI7LOQ checked in after closing from Meridian,ID with a solid signal. Aaron works in the ID OEM radio room. Thanks to Brad WA7HHE for relaying the check-in call with the new macro. My thinking about weak station check-in is to check them in&out when u pick them up on relay. We don’t normally work practice traffic by relay. It takes lots of time. Some stations I’m unable to copy, do copy me. They can monitor and learn digital traffic routines.

Clifford N0LKC/P is a Poster-Op for the wisdom of monitoring. He checked in&out numerous time last year from various western campgrounds. Usually @ 15w. Tonight was his first active ck-in and he hit 100%. He’s the first and only station to work ORCA portable. Good on you, Clifford. Jaye KE6SLS checked in late from an ARC meeting in Eureka,CA. With him was Howard KB6NN and Don WA6NBG. Good to see Don. He joined ORCA just weeks after inception, when ORCA was VHF only. Don was our most distant station @ 100mi; a stretch on VHF. Sometimes we worked @ 5w. Other times, 160w wouldn’t work. Steve KB6HOH was by early, in&out.

Next week we’ll ask a couple stations to pass their traffic off-net-freq. We’ll do this every 3rd week each month. We’re adapting Amateur network conventions and protocols to digital nets. We’ll sort out some simple phrases for sending Ops off-net and the terminology they’ll use to return & report; digital net versions of CW/Phone net phrases. Mindy & I need to practice tracking Ops and traffic for this exercise. In a real Traffic or Emergency net we would be tracking active Ops, traffic flow, and traffic held. I’m glad we don’t have to do much of this now. We’re already busy.

The VideoID macro distributed in the FLAMP exercise will help off-net traffic stations return to net. ‘Recheck’ is the term used to return to net when you are already logged in, but checked out for some purpose. To return, after passing traffic, you would normally say/send ‘recheck’ when NCS is not busy. For our digital purposes, you can send your call @ 1500 or print your VideoID around 1000 & 2000wf. NCS will say, ‘W1AW go’, or ‘W1AW?’. On Phone nets, U say, ‘W1AW, back to net, 1 traffic passed/received’. For digital nets, NCS knows ur here, no need to say ‘back to net’. We’ll be closer to CW conventions. NCS sees VideoID, says,’W1AW?’. U: ‘W1AW, 1 tfk TX’ or ‘W1AW, 1 tfk RX’. NCS: ‘W1AW < NCS, 1 tfk rx, tu < NCS’. VideoID or ‘recheck’ will also get NCS attention if you want to change ur ‘in&out’ status to active.

If you have time to review our work on the website, look for typos and errors. We don’t always see our typos. Give the Quick Start Guide a critical read. ORCA has grown a bit more complex since the Guide was first written and it’s not seeming so Quick now. I’ve added a couple explanation tabs. Your observations may help improve it.  We enjoyed working with you tonight.  Hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.   73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 09 January 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘VideoIDmacro.b2s’,
an FLDIGI Macro. Paste the code into a macro button to quickly
print your callsign anywhere on the WF, set mode to MFSK-32, and
return cursor to 1500. I can see ur ID easily around 1000/2000wf.

Next week we will pass a message or two off-net-freq. Have a short
message ready. We will do a couple off-freq messages on the 3rd
week each month. VideoID is handy for getting NCS attention when
returning to net.

We worked Clifford N0LKC’s idea for a 160m digital QSO. 5Jan,0400z.
Starting in Olivia 8/500, Clifford @ 15w, me 35. When Olivia began
to skip, we went to MFSK-16 and reduced r pwr to 5w, still printing
95%. QSY> 80m MFSK-16, we soon needed MFSK-8 which printed 90%. An
interesting and surprising experiment. Clifford’s portable 5w 160m
signal was impressive.

Digital shorthand for RELAY:
“RELAY <callsign> <callsign> in&out DE <URcall>”. Ck-ins NCS can’t
copy are ‘in&out’.

When you have time, please review the website. We’ve been updating
for 2018, our 5th Anniversary. Mindy added interactive maps for the
mainpage and Net Reports. Nearby stations are grouped by city. There
are handy timezone converters near the schedules. Most sections have
been updated. Please watch for errors/typos.

Traffic Round: Send your traffic in a mode you think band condx will
support. Current condx are good for learning mode characteristics.
Images welcome; consider image TX time. Enable TxID when changing mode.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

Thanks for the macro coding. I’m now commuting on weeknights so ORCA is one of the later nets and I am usually home by 7pm. Thanks for being here! Also, my Winlink HF station is now moved over to ARDOP (which is planned to replace WINMOR). If you feel brave, join the ARDOP folks and test it! Just look on the Winlink.org map and click the ARDOP button to see frequencies. It’s going to be an option in Winlink Express but right now you need to use a program called ARDOP_PTC to fool RMS Express into thinking its a PACTOR mode.

Macro from last week installed. Usual 15 watts here and no sun today, so it’s all about rationing the power today. Thanks for all, it was a good night to give it a round tonight, I will keep an eye for such opportunities. GE to all from SW AZ, hamfest getting closer. 73 de N0LKC

Prior to each ORCA net, I go to a couple of different HF propagation sites to get an idea of what to expect from the band. I will be posting the expected forecast and solar-terrestrial indices to my ORCA RX report so I can try learn what the actual correlation is to these numbers, the ORCA net & my station.

Welcome back to Doug WB6VAC and GE to Don WA6NBG! Tough condx tonite, but able to copy most with condx getting a little better towards the end. Kudos to Clifford N0LKC/P operating portable from a campground and particiating fully in net with tough band condx… Bravo!! Our county/state use WINMOR, so I guess we’ll get to learn ARDOP too.
