80m was acting a bit like 60m tonight. Sudden deep fading left Steve K6ETA with few readable stations for awhile. By net-end we were all copying well again. And the CW CQ signal from K7MBA in WA ran for 50+min @ 1200wf. A very odd CW CQ; almost no time to reply before it repeated. Maybe the station was exercising on it’s own while the Op was away. Anyway, we decided to remain on our freq to see how well we coped with the QRM. It was good experience and not much bother.

The CW signal was within the THOR-50×1 data stream and did interfere somewhat, but had little effect on MFKS-32. I would like to have tried MFSK-64 to see how well it coped with an included CW signal, but the signal stopped when we closed. The signal would have hammered a phone net.

When Steve couldn’t copy NCS, he could copy Brad WA7HHE in UT. Mindy W7ZAP asked Brad to relay the FLAMP exercise msg and Steve CONFIRMED it easily. Try to note which stations you hear best. This will help us connect you with the best relay when you’re not printing NCS. We’re gaining more proficiency with REPORT & RELAY. Being handy with these features will be important in poor band condx.

Jaye KE6SLS & Howard KB6NN in Eureka!CA were at ARC meetings, but copied the net while away. Jaye reported the same fade that took out Steve’s station for awhile. We had 6 in&out stations tonight and one out @ 2000, so the net didn’t run too long. We likely have more monitoring stations than we would guess. Much can be learned by monitoring, but the practice you get with participation turns knowledge into skills.

Thanks for practicing with us tonight. I look forward to working with you again next Tuesday.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 07 November 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex45.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions

and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send

your own practice traffic or QRU.

Last week we listed SATERN International Digital Net and NA ID ERC

Digital Net as places for additional digital practice. Another source

for digital practice is Ken K7IFG’s Amateur bulletins sent weekly:

MONDAY 10:30am on 60 meters Ch#2

FRIDAY 7:00 PM on 80 meters 3582.5 khz +/-

SIGNAL REPORTS CAN BE SENT TO K7IFG@ARRL.NET OR K7IFG@WINLINK.ORG

If you’re new to ORCA and make a mistake now & then, don’t worry.

Your mistake has probably been made once or more by one of us. It’s

a learning and practice net; mistakes happen. Even on Traffic and

Emergency nets. Most often, it’s a simple double. Relax and keep

practicing.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

< K7KY

Next, Mindy W7ZAP will conduct the weekly FLAMP exercise in THOR 50×1 and fill in MFSK-32… over to Mindy.. < K7KY

ORCA DIGITAL NET – Late/Visitor Check-in? < K7KY

We’re doing very well with this CW signal so close… it’s very odd to see an Extra class CW Op hammering away for 50min w/o one contact… I think it’s his computer on auto while he’s out to dinner or sumsuch… anyway, we move on to the Comment round with Bill K6QOG < K7KY

K6QOG < K7KY Bill u hv any comments for the net tonight? < K7KY

k7ky de k6qog sorry Doug, I was in another conversation and I learned something new tonight through the exercise that I missed two weeks ago so for me this is a good night thanks to you Doug and Mindy. de k6qog

K6QOG < K7KY FB Bill always good to hr… and the CW sig is also good for practice we’ll eventually encounter much worse condx I think BREAK next for comments is Steve K6ETA < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

Very odd condx tonight… everyone was strong and then the bottom fell out of the band just as Mindy was starting FLAmp. Then everyone was gone. Then WA7HHE came back and about 3 minutes later everyone else came up again. Now Doug is pushing +10

The SFI is 68, SN at ZERO A index at 38 (turbulent!) and K of 6 (Storm)

So we got some good practice in.

I’m interested in anyone’s comments on the DoD excercise… sorry to have missed that.

< K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY RR Steve… I can say a bit about the exercise… the DOD tried to ck-in every county in USA on the weekend.. and the counties gathered info by VHF/UHF on local condx re: transportation, comm, ect 6 catagories… The HF portion is done on 60m and ur condx tonight reminds me of 60m where stations come and go quickly with QSB etc… BREAK

next is Brad WA7HHE < K7KY

K7KY and the ORCA Net < WA7HHE, Attempted to participate in the DOD exercise on 60m, copied Fort Huachuca Instructions on Saturday evening, however when moving the the Channelized Freq unable to copy the MARS station, heard others providing Damage Assessment Reports same experience on Sunday, however ORCA net member and participating MARS member AL7BX was able to take my county report on 2 meters. Where there is a will there is a way:)

73’s to all on the net tonight de WA7HHE

WA7HHE < K7KY FB Brad nice to hr George filled the gap… We enjoyed the exercise here and there is a local OP Chuck W6ZX who is also MARS that took responsibility for the exercise locally and it went well BREAK next up is Larry N7SND < K7KY

ORCA Logo had a lot of snow in the image tonight.

About as bad as I have seen.

Was quite surprised that THOR failed. Did a good job last week.

K6ETA was very weak even with 300Watts.

Did not copy N7SND’s FlAmp, but all others were received 100%

As per the CW signal at 1150 did not affect my station.

Steve, your right! Strange conditions!

KA7FOO

KA7FOO < K7KY RR Doug I think the CW signal hindered THOR-50×1 we didn’t think abt it b4 beginning… if we had more time I’d like to see if we could stay right here close to the CW and try MFSK-64 to see if it might handle the QRM better..

Tough band condx. THOR 50×1 was the wrong choice with CW stn so close! Glad K6ETA let me know he could hear WA7HHE. Good idea to let me know if you can hear particular station if you copy none or very little. Tough condx are great for practice… might be like that in an emergency and we won’t be so flustered. Appreciate working with you all and hope to see you again on the WF soon.

All ORCA I forgot during the net to ask if anyone can tell me how to enable timestamping on the log… my fldigi used to default to timestamping and somewhere along the line doing up version installs, it stopped and I can’t find where to enable it… tnx if u know… < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

The command in the macros for timestamp is <ZDT> but you may be referring to some feature I don’t know about?

< K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY RR Steve it’s another feature I think both Mindy’s and my station used to automatically time stamp the RX buffer log with time/mode/freq but some version update turned it off and I don’t know how to get it working agn… it’s helpful when reviewing the log to know the time (sometimes) I’ll keep looking and if I can’t find it, I’ll ask Dave on the forum I hesitate

to ask w/o trying to find out myself so I don’t look too dumb.. btu < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

FB… I’m looking through all the config screens and don’t see anything. You would think it would be under UI LOG or some such?

< K6ETA

I think it has to do with the Notification screen…. years ago I fiddled with these settings and altered the stamp to drop the freq from the stamp, but I don’t really understand that screen and lately I’ve not been able to remenber what I did there… and, it may hv changed… if u find it I wouild appreciate learning abt it too… tnx < K7KY
