Thanks to Bruno KG7VVN for conducting the NBEMS Exercise tonight. Four stations participated; they did well with an unusual Macro Exercise. We’ll do more with Macros later this month.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes three 1st time check-ins tonight, Jadon KJ7RBS in Filer,ID, Gregg AB0GD in Platte City,MO, and Dane W7LOA in Seabeck,WA. We’ll ask them to review our website Quick-Start Guide” http://orcadigitalnet.com.  If the NBEMS Exercises interest them, they can learn them by checking in QNX, working silently while Monitoring, and checking their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Three new Ck-Ins in one evening may be an ORCA record.

Our 10yr Anniversary is an occasion for reviewing net protocols. ORCA is a training and practice net, focused on digital networking conventions and FLDIGI NBEMS traffic-handling routines. Those focal points define the net. We meet regularly to train and practice. The net is specifically organized to support training and practice. We’ve been doing it successfully for 10yrs now. Every aspect of our net supports training and practice. Even the Comment Round where we discuss topics relative to our net, personal station projects, member ARC activities, and other digital radio topics. Digital networking and traffic-handling circumscribe our Comment Round topics. There’s been no need to list unwelcome topics like Race, Religion, Politics, LE, etc. We’ve stuck closely to our agenda and worked efficiently together as friends and colleagues for 10yrs.

Last Thursday on Western Digital Net, Don KJ7VGV’s comments concerned the increasing odds of war with China. Tonight, his Comment Round QST is a Nuclear fallout map of America. Whatever your politics or religion, it’s hard to miss our leadership enthusiastically poking the Bear and Dragon. We live in turbulent and increasingly dangerous times. I share Don’s concerns for the future, for ourselves, our families, communities, and Country. On one hand, I don’t want to disturb the respect and regard we have for each other. On the other hand, I would like to discuss home-defense, health, and food concerns with  trusted colleagues. A deep wealth of living knowledge and experience resides in our network. We will be stronger, safer, and more effective by working, exploring, and strategizing together. Here’s one thought on how to do this without disturbing ORCA DIGITAL NET’s balance and utility.

Western Digital Net is a Traffic Net currently without significant formal traffic. Our traffic is mainly QST posted by members for members. I suggest discussing topics of concern to members, like Health, Food, Home/Neighborhood security, Law & Order, etc in WDN QST and Comment rounds. It would satisfy two objectives: Preserve the training/practice balance on ORCA and provide a valuable forum for mutual concerns on WDN. Implemented wisely, it would attract more stations to WDN. Preparing and responding to challenges on our immediate horizon will interest many of our radio colleagues. These are important topics. This network belongs to all of us. Your input will help us choose a path that increases everyone’s odds of surviving and prospering thru dangerous times. Please weigh in with your thoughts and concerns. It would be tragic to suffer problems we could have avoided by exploring and strategizing together.

Please voice your thoughts, concerns, and suggestions in WDN’s Comment Round. Hosting these topics on WDN is a decision for all of us, but particularly for Jaye KE6SLS, Don KJ7VGV, and Brad WA7HHE, our Net Control Stations.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 07/FEB/23

In place of our usual NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise this evening, we’ll create a Macro on-the-fly. The Exercise file includes the TEXT; you’ll select the necessary Tags. You need at minimum 3 Tags to ID & Start/Stop transmission. Bruno KG7VVN will conduct the Exercise.

Later this month, we’ll revisit Daisy-Chaining Macros in a Comment Round. We’ll again use our Path Evaluation and Comment Macros. Daisy-chaining is a misnomer for Macros. My bad. To computer-savvy Ops, daisy-chaining implies that Macros can activate other Macros; this is misleading.

‘Macro definitions are not recursive, that is; a macro cannot reference another macro or itself.’
FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.20 Ch18, pp289.

Some of our Macros are Complementary, they work with other Macros to complete a task. Some Macros start the transmitter and leave it on, other Macros only stop transmission. They work together to complete a task. Later this month, we’ll experiment with Complementary Macros.

Most of our radio stations include Winlink. Although Winlink has a polarized reputation among Amateurs, it has many solid features. Winlink is globally established and very robust. Winlink traffic moves more quickly across the internet, but internet is not required. Winlink traffic also moves on HF, but more slowly. When we compare Winlink with FLDIGI, it’s Peer-2-Peer structure limits wide-dispersion traffic. FLDIGI traffic is decodable by anyone on the frequency. Winlink traffic is only readable by a single receiving station. This severely limits Winlink for time-critical traffic. There are more differences, but there’s no reason to eschew one app for the other. They’re complementary applications with complementary features.

Winlink Tip: Keeping your ‘Favorite’ Channel up-2-date will be important when internet is down. Your list of Favorites will be your go-to Gateways when the Channels list is outdated. The Channels list can be updated on HF, but not quickly. Keep your Favorite Channels list current; you will need it when the internet is down.

We got 3 New Ops and 3 Steves in a row on the roster tonite :-)

With recent events about the ballon and subsequent “fallout”.
I searched for my US map about a detailed nuclear attack on the U.S.
Since I could not find it. I did find a simulation showing a nuclear
attack on the U.S over time. I would like to share that in a QST tonight.
