ORCA DIGITAL NET, Report 6/Jan/15

Check-ins:  7
Traffic: 4

Stations:
KJ6UPE Danon TNX6D David
K7IFG Ken T
W7ZAP Mindy T
KW6JIM Jim kbd
K7KY Doug T (NCS)

Although the band was noisy, the net went well.  NCS needs to use more power for the voice portion in winter.  35w is not enough.  I have 100w, but don’t use it often as Mindy W7ZAP is only a few feet from my station and our antennas are 70′ apart.   At 500w David NX6D had a solid signal with excellent audio.  Paul KE6NVU was on frequency just before the net, but gone by check-in.  After a meeting in Eureka, Jim KW6JIM  joined the digital portion just before closing.  Some of our regular Eureka Ops were attending meetings tonight too.

It’s remarkable how well digital signals are decoded when it’s difficult to communicate by voice with a lot more power.

Discussion points:
NCS needs to use more power for the voice portion during winter
Ops should lock the fldigi curser prior to transmitting
Late/visiting Ops can break into the digital net by sending three 1sec tuning signals @ 2000 on the waterfall
We want to have our TXID enabled so we will all be on the same mode

:sb:35 Transmit level attenuator in FLDIGI
:mg:662 It is often difficult to adjust the audio drive to the point where ALC is just barely active. Mixer
controls are OK, but not usually designed for very small changes. They are designed for adjusting listening levels.
FLDIGI provides the ability to control the audio drive in increments of 0.1 dB over a 30 dB range. This control is
located in the bottom right corner of the main dialog:

Set this control for -6 dB and then adjust the sound card mixer control for the best ALC level you can achieve.
Then adjust the Tx-level control for best “just visible” ALC on the transceiver. That should give you a very clean
PSK signal.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
